While I agree with your comments, the divide for me came in Bush's second term. During his first term, there was civil discussion about what to do about 911, and general support for the war-time president. Also, Medicare Part D (prescription drugs) was passed).I miss the days when politics was about good governance.
Now it's so much about the personalities of the politicians.
As a geezer, to me the turning point was in the 1980s or so when CNN started doing Crossfire.
Before that it was what we would now call "policy wonks" having civil discussions.
Once it became a shouting match, it was more about entertainment than anything else.
I'm pretty amazed how some pretty smart people I know are so absorbed by the behavior of some of the stupidest people in our society.
I have no idea why they find such people so engaging, entertaining, or whatever it is that makes them even bother to know who they are.
By 2004, everyone was shouting from their political corners.
