Gonzo signaling…

Gonzalez deal with what's left

2026: 4.8M
2027 (option): 18.1
2028 (2026 franshise number for CB was 21.6 up just under a 1M from the previous year. Let's assume it goes up 2.4 in two years which is probably high but we'll call it) 23M

So you can think of him as being currently on a 3/45.9 deal which is a bargain and a half and it's risk free from signing bonuses and large cap hits should anything change.

If you're going to extend him it probably needs to be a 7 year deal where he sees more money in the first two years than he would now but it flattens out for the team years 4-7 for it to make sense for both sides. Say 7/175 for an average contact of 25M. The first three yeara he makes an extra 25-30M depending on how you structure the signing bonus.

If he wants top defender money not just top corner it's probably not happening until 2029 and at that point it's probably not happening here.

That logic doesn't really hold up. So you are saying he wants to be paid as the highest defensive player because... it's a lot of money? Who's to say that he doesn't want to be paid as the highest player, period, then? That's even MORE money? He wants QB money!!! It's the MOST money!!!! I mean, it's a lot to leave on the table, man!
I should have framed my comment as being paid at the top of non QB market.

look, I am not saying he is or is not. I posted I was speculating.
for all we know, Witherspoon is angling for top of non QB money, and Gonzo is simply waiting for Witherspoon to sign first

The longer they wait, the more it’ll cost.
It never makes sense to me. If you're going to retain the guy why wait for 3 other guys to reset the market over the summer so you're now having to match a higher number?

yeah, I would say that Gonzo would go 4 years on top of 2027, with a signing bonus spread out over the contract.
obviously his bonus is guaranteed, and year 1 as well. I would think he is looking at $85-$90m guaranteed

who is to say the Pats are waiting?

There is no question Gonzo will be the top paid CB once he signs, the only question is by how much.

and for how long if he signs before Witherspoon

Because the player you're signing has agency too. He very well might want to wait and see how the market develops.

As a player, if you're wanting to extend with your current team, why not wait for 3 other guys to reset the market over the summer so you're now being paid a higher number?

Signing and signaling looks awfully similar….Read it initially as the former.

I’m 99.9% sure that contract talks are ongoing. Doubt we’ll hear anything until after the draft.

It is much safer to assume Gonzalez will demand every penny he can get. I wouldn't project any sort of "his personality doesn't seem that way" kind of thinking onto it. These are people risking their future health for a decade, at absolute best, of entertainment. Period.

well, just looking at the Trent McDuffie deal, it has 100m in guaranteed money... i'd be willing to pass on a few dollars for that type of guarantee...

I can't fault anyone for trying to maximize their earnings, when their span of employment is so short, and year over year most likely is not guaranteed.

I hope this doesn't develop into some kind of Trey Hendrickson/Bengals situation.

True. The player could also value where they're at and their situation and want to get the deal done. There is also the risk that a blown achilles, ACL, etc happens in OTAs/camp and that payday goes from generational wealth to a one year "prove you're healthy" offer.
who is to say the Pats are waiting?
He is eligible for a deal and doesn't have one yet.
