Player Signing Patriots Sign OT James Hudson III

"I think we went to bed last night hoping that he would be there at this spot," said Glenn Cook, Browns Vice President of Player Personnel. "Just in terms of speaking to the position, you can never have enough big dudes who can move and can fit in the scheme. Just a really good fit and really good value for where we got him."
At least somebody seems to think he’s not completely un athletic despite popular opinion on this thread. But what does that guy know?

why is Chuks your go to, when you are mostly wrong about him?
in 2020/21/22 , the Steelers were in the playoffs 2 of those years. Chuks played 94%, 97% and 100% of the teams offensive snaps those 3 seasons, earning a 2nd contract from the team that drafted him.
granted, once he got paid, he lost interest and fell off (a la Trent Brown). he came here on a look see/change of scenery deal, and again lost interest/poor coaching/poor scheme and he walked away...
for a 3 year span, he was a very viable RT
Chuks is my “go to” because it was the season before last, people like you were here telling us he was a good signing because of draft status and because he started some games. When I pointed out he wasn’t good regardless of starts, you said well at least he’s cheap.

Chuks stunk, he still stinks… he played on the Steelers which had one of the worst lines in the NFL. Now he rides the pine. “Playing” doesn’t equate to good, especially when the result is bad.

Good feet.
Yes, quick in pass protection at LT in this film, though most of his snaps have been at RT. Doesn't appear to have much power in run blocking but there weren't many plays to judge that. Overall he looks like a Lowe-equivalent, so he's a decent pickup.

Good job Wozzy, raising the bar now that 5 pages is getting close…
This thread should've ended after 1-2 pages max with majority of posters not even responding to this.

the result was playoffs in 2 of the 3 years, and 1 year the Steelers offense was ranked #12
the result was also a 2nd contract
you need a better barometer. your current one sucks

I never understood the thought process of commenting on a thread with "why are people commenting on this thread?"

Team record is team success, not individual player success. They had one of the worst OLines in the league, rushing and pass protection at that time.

The Steelers actually traded for our #1 draft pick to take an offensive tackle because Chuks sucked. Good tackles are starting, not riding the pine for the horrid Jets.

Laughable….

I would assume Chuks is the swing OT for the Jets in a similar manner Lowe was for the Pats this season.
that is if he is motivated and willing to put in the work.
you were pining for 1st rd pick Membou last season. and Fashanu is also a #1 pick.
no issues with Chuks not seeing snaps over either

So a warm body… that’s not a “good” signing.

Good players are wanted, there’s a shortage of good tackles. They are sought after, There are job openings for those guys. Pretty simple.

But I guess that’s why you were telling us the 2024 OLine was going to be good, then during the season were constantly in a state of improving… yet never actually did. Because in your mind any warm body would do.

you are going all Wozzy on this thread
stay on task please

re Hudson. the Pats are razor thin at the OT position. they have a 2nd year player that missed 4 games his rookie season, and played thru the playoffs/SB injured. they also have a 35 yr old that was thought to be considering retirement. lastly, they have a rookie who they never trusted to see any snaps the entire season. therefore, they took a flier at a 5 year vet that is guaranteed nothing, blocks no one, while they continue to monitor the free agent/trade markets, and interview draftable options.
only you would find fault in the signing.

Hudson doesn’t have “talent,” he’s a stiff.

And not every move this regime makes is genius
or even good. Moreover there’s certainly favoritism or nepotism involved in some moves. “I like the guy” or “I worked with the guy” certainly happens in the NFL.

He was a poor athlete in the testing process, check his combine and pro day results. College players can get by or even excel just being big, the NFL is a different animal altogether.

Just because some outliers succeed without being really athletic, doesn’t mean it’s common or a regular occurrence. A prospect needs athleticism and brains, some have more of one than the other. You need to understand how to play and have the physical abilities to play at the highest level.

If Hudson had that, he would have shown it already. If Chuks Okorafor was going to be good, he would have shown it already. God knows both guys were given every opportunity.

Draft status means zero, absolutely nothing after the draft happens. The NFL is a meritocracy. Draft status may buy you more time, but it won’t make you a better player.

Let’s not go 10 pages trying to polish this turd into a diamond.

Did what you said. What does looking at his Combine numbers tell you since he didn't actually test? Yes, people know he wasn't a great athlete. That's also why people watch tape..

Most people have said that this is a bottom of the roster move. I haven't seen anyone touting it as anything else.

Something you over-looked. Vrabel has 1st hand knowledge of the guy from his time in Cleveland.

If the Pats were razor thin before the Hudson signing…. they still are.

HUH? People stated that Chuks had the potential to be a good signing. You're being ridiculous claiming "he started some games" when he was a starter for 3 years. From 2020 - 2022, Okorafor started in 15, 16 and 17 games. So, he started in 48 of 49 games across 3 years. Contrary to your opinion, he didn't stink. He was a middle of the road guy and better than what the Pats had at RT when unexplainably moved Wynn to RT and Trent Brown to LT.

2020 - 755 pass blocking snaps - 3 sacks, 5 QB hits, 21 hurries (25th in total hurries of all OTs with at least 564 regular snaps)
2021 - 720 pass blocking snaps - 2 sacks, 7 QB hits, 14 hurries ((17th in total hurries of all OTs with at least 600 regular season snaps)
2022 - 686 pass blocking snaps - 3 sacks, 5 QB hits, 33 hurries (49th in total hurries of all OTs with at least 594 snaps)

Yes, he got worse in 2022. Not sure what happened. I said I'd hoped he could turn it around. But the Clusterf**k that was Mayo prevented that from ever being a potential. You acting like he sucked his entire career is you being as blind as the ones who were touting him as anything more than a low-risk high reward potential signing.

Well, just remember - we all hated Lowe with a passion last year. And he was terrible.
Then, suddenly filling in for Will, he was quite competent and stable. To the point where some thought he'd be a sure FA re-sign. So... sometimes coaching and OL teammates matter. At least the guy has fight and serious aggression.

Incorrect. They traded for the Pats #1 because they wanted to replace Dan Moore. That draft pick was Broderick Jones.. Whom they wanted to take over at LT. Jones failed to win the job out of Training Camp. Jones didn't see any regular snaps at LT until week 4 that year when Moore went down. Jones then played the next game at LT. Then was benched again when Moore returned. Okorafor was their starter at RT through week 8 (week 6 Bye). Then, Tomlin put there Top Draft pick in at RT despite his lousy play.

Jones at RT - 331 pass blocking snaps - 4 sacks, 3 QB hits, 18 hurries - 1 pressure every 13.24 snaps.
Okorafor - 269 pass blocking snaps - 2 sacks, 0 QB hits, 9 hurries - 1 pressure every 24.5 snaps.

Broderick Jones was only marginally better for the Steelers as Demontrey Jacobs was for the Pats in 2024:
Jones - 593 pass blocking snaps - 10 sacks, 9 QB hits, 24 QB hurries - 1 pressure every 13.8 snaps
Demontrey Jacobs- 566 pass blocking snaps - 9 sacks, 7 QB hits, 33 hurries - 1 pressure every 11.6 snaps

Broderick Jones was moved BACK to LT in 2025 and he sucks still.
2025 - 380 pass blocking snaps, 6 sacks, 6 QB hits, 11 hurries - 1 pressure every 16.5 snaps.

What's laughable is you trying to re-write history on what actually happened in Pittsburgh with Okorafor when it's there for everyone to see. The fact that you think that Broderick Jones is good shows how out of whack your takes have gotten.

This guy looks as good as Lowe was.

His numbers say he's worse. In fact, worse than Demontrey Jacobs..

2025 - 61 pass blocking snaps - 1 sack, 2 QB hits, 4 hurries - 1 pressure every 8.7 snaps.
2024 - 159 pass blocking snaps - 0 sacks, 7 QB hits, 8 hurries - 1 pressure every 10.6 snaps
2023 - 369 pass blocking snaps - 5 sacks, 8 QB hits, 23 hurries - 1 pressure every 10.25 snaps
2022 - 177 pass blocking snaps - 1 sack, 2 QB hits, 12 hurries - 1 pressure every 11.8 snaps
2021 - 181 pass blocking snaps - 3 sacks, 1 QB hit, 9 hurries - 1 pressure every 13.92 snaps.

They could see him as a guard. They could see him as a guy who won't make it past mini-camps. It's a signing of a player that Vrabel has some familiarity with from his year in Cleveland.

Wozzy loses interest when presented with both facts and the truth. if it doesn't fit his agenda, he ducks out with a meme
