Player Signing Romeo Doubs Signs

Douglas is going into his 4th year.

Edelman and Troy Brown did not break out until their 5th years.

In Demario's first 3 years with the Patriots, he caught 146 receptions for 1629 yards.
In Wes Welker's first 3 years in the NFL, he caught 96 receptions for 1021 yards.

That doesn't mean Douglas is going to become Julian or Wes or Troy Brown. For me it means that if the coaches think he has the ability to become a possession guy for us, he could break out in his 4th or 5th year. It's happened before. Multiple times.

Of course, it could also mean that the coaches do not know how to use him and so they release him, like Welker was let go, and he goes on to play well elsewhere.
Honestly my take on Douglass is that he had a ton of ability but is a dummy.
That’s often the definition of a guy who develops slowly, has bumping the road but eventually takes the coaching and busts out.
With player development it’s always hit or miss and many more don’t bust out than do, but Douglass does fit the mold to me, it’s just a matter of whether the dumb can be fixed.

Bill always did what Bill wanted to do, no one ever made Bill do anything. The claim that " the front office made Bill" do anything is 100% ********. Bill was the " front office," everyone worked under him. He's the GOAT coach, but he was also the biggest control freak I have ever seen. Part of that made him the GOAT, the other part, the hubris, was his biggest flaw.
And at that time there was a lot of tension in the front office and a lot of commentary from Kraft that this needed to change. Ultimately he was fired so it’s very reasonable to believe the first steps were for him to lose power and give in to the people Kraft hired to “collaborate”.

Also when the person who is final decision maker makes the final decision they think is best, and are always consistent with their gut, it’s not hubris. I know people like to use that word to sound smart, but it actually makes you sound dumb.

I'm surprised you're not asking of Wolf's head.

Wolf isn't the person who wanted to trade the #3 overalll pick for Justin Fields, that was you. And you may want to try using less make up, you look pretty damn goofy there.

There's conflicting stories. One is that the FO pushed Bill into signing Schuster because he had better YAC ability than Meyers. Meyers story is that the Pats let him go over "$1M". He didn't elaborate whether it was per year or total. I'm guessing it's per year.

Regardless, Meyers had serious issues in beating man coverage much like Diggs this season.

The story that Bill let Meyers walk over 1 million $ rings pretty true. He did the same thing with Welker, although I'm not sure if the exact number, but Bill made Welker an offer and didn't budge off it. For the most part Bill's " negotiating" style was that he made an offer and you either agreed to it or walked. If you listen to former players talk about it you went in, he told you everything you sucked at , then lowballed you.

And if worked better than any other way anyone has tried.

We can safely say that Callahan has ties to Belichick, because he reported that. Only he wrote that before the season when there was not yet enough evidence to realize what a mistake it was to let Meyers go.
Letting Meyers go, and replacing him with JuJu, was probably the biggest personnel error of the past 5 years. We knew he was good from his first training camp as a udfa, extremely consistent and reliable.

On the other hand, I'm extremely optimistic about Doubs, it's one of our best personnel moves of this era.

The question is, do we still use those metrics when evaluating players? Belichick was never a metrics guy, he believed more in functional ability on the field, so the only metric he emphasized was quickness in short spaces (shuttle times). Whereas a lot of the numbers people use to measure impact take things like depth of target and yards after catch into account. Those metrics seem important until you realize football is a game played by human beings who wear down slowly over the course of a drive, so the longer you sustain a drive, the greater the chance of success. Or, to flip it, if Belichick were a boxing coach, he would definitely train the boxer to throw as many body blows as possible early on.

I'm always reminded that one of the best offenses we ever had here was in 2012 when we used Brandon Lloyd to keep us on schedule. I've never seen a WR turtle more than him after a catch. He was always avoiding the big hit. Yet you look at the production of that offense, and you realize it was one of the greatest offenses in NFL history. Brandon Lloyd had 50 first downs that year. Combined with Wes Welker's 71 and Gronk's 45, the team was a 1st down machine.

The greatest first down offense in NFL history with a total of 444.

Tom Brady should have been MVP that year. Even Aaron Rodgers, with much worse numbers, finished ahead of him, despite the Patriots historic offense.

This is a bunch of BS and you know it.

He was told he had to collaborate, and that meant he couldn't do whatever he wanted 100% of the time. If nothing changed in how Belichick conducted business as you claimed, then Kraft wouldn't have come out and said that drafting would be more collaborative. It would be meaningless for him to say so if Belichick is making all the final decisions, just like he did before, as though Bill was scouting everyone himself prior to 2021 and doing everything himself.

This is not the first time that Kraft removed all drafting power from a future Hall of Fame coach either, as the same thing happened with Parcells. I remember like yesterday when Kraft went to the media and made a big deal out of Joe Burch being drafted by Parcells, because Burch didn't even making it out of training camp. Kraft took that as a sign of deficiency in Parcells.

I'm always thrilled when the Pats make moves that I suggest weeks earlier.
Doubs was my #2 desired addition if Pierce got too expensive, and that's how it played out.
I really don't want AJ Brown - I think he'd disrupt the vibe of this WR corp.
Doubs is a quiet, thoughtful guy who puts all his energy onto the field.
Boutte & Williams are kinda similar. Not sure where Pop or Chism end up, but they're good character guys too.
I like Hollins as the vet/vocal leader. Maybe Jiles can make a move in the Hollins backup role. He shined last preseason.

I like how Reiss breaks down the contract…

And if he produces like I think he will, those last two years, they're going to keep him, and it will be way-below market for his production.

Edit: Also there's still plenty of cap space should the Patriots want to add someone with a pretty big cap number this year.

The original 2 years for $60M would've been ridiculous. This contract is way more favorable.

He is younger and cheaper for sure. Better remains to be seen, but keeping Diggs at his number would've been idiotic.

Some of these contracts are really well done by Wolf or whoever is creating the contract, AVTs contract with the per game roster bonus being pretty significant saves them against injury. AVT is also essentially a 2/28Mwith an out after 2028 with 2.4M dead cap.

Unless he is actually pretty meh there isn't a reason to cut him. In year 3. Year 4 e would make more sense. I don't like when people pretend dead cap hits don't matter, they do.

And as an aside this gives us a general idea of whether Boutte will cost more or less. Personally I am not a fan of having multiple mid wr contracts on the books. I don't find them to be good value. Sometimes you need to do them, but again I hate paying substantial cap for mid production. And that is what we will be doing a lot of at WR.

Diggs led the team last year with 51 first downs on 85 catches. So Doubs had almost as many first downs with few catches.

Do ever wonder why on earth would GB let him walk?
They drafted two WR's last year, one in the first round (Matthew Golden) that did not get much run last year and one in the third round (Savion Williams). That is a lot of draft capital at the WR position. They have a deep WR room and you do not make draft investments like that without the intention of them replacing someone like Doubs who is a good player but they probably did not want to pay and can get a comp pick for. I think it as simple as that.

I like these incentives on the Doubs contract.
