Cool Link VIDEO: Efton Chism Getting After It

Links to cool things
I'm so tired of these videos. Seriously N'Keal Harry was the master of these offseason videos and then disappeared in the actual games.

Chism just needs to prove it on the field. I like the kid overall but these videos do a 0% job of convincing.

Chism ran a 4.71 yard 40 apparently. He didn't get any quicker overnight.
We'd get reports about how Mac Jones was really getting it all together in the off season, and then nothing would come of that either.

Show it on the field.

I won't go that far - I'm just skeptical he's going to be Wes Welker. He does have good hands and decent size.

He could be something, but man is he ever slow. I don't ever need to see him returning a kickoff ever again.
I don’t think there is any chance he comes close to Welker on any level. To me at least, his ceiling is a punt returner. Drake seems to favor the larger catch radius type receivers and Chism's is pretty small. I think so much of the Chism hype comes from the fact that he is a white guy from a school that produced another white guy who ended up being one of the best receivers in the league for a few years. I get that he broke Kupp's records but I remember some crazy stat that 40% of the passes Chism caught were behind the line of scrimmage. I just don't see him turning into a viable slot guy.

I get why a lot of people have Chism as their binkie. But like others here, I just don't see it. He wasn't very good as a returner. He had his moments this past season, but it was fleeting. I think he will be a practice squader again next season. And if he was that good, someone would have poached him from the Patriots' practice squad.

Nobody poached him because he was never on the practice squad. He was on the 53 all season long, just a healthy scratch for multiple weeks.

Coincidently the same time that Jerry Rice had.

He wasn't a practice squadeer THIS season and nobody poached him because he was never on the PS to poach.

Welker ran a 4.65 4 40. So .06 seconds difference.

For completness, Danny Amendola ran a 4.58 and JE a 4.52.

Sorry my bad. I thought he was on the practice squad earlier in the season.

Last year he made the team and even got some playing time in games. If he gets cut in training camp this year and never signs with another team again he'll have already outplayed probably 95% of the UDFAs in league history. Hundreds of those guys sign to team's 90 man rosters each year and only a handful at most for each team ever make a team. Some get cut without lasting a full year and some never play. Even fewer will come back and make the team again.

The fact that he made the team shows that the team saw SOMETHING in him but reality is that when you're talking about the last few spots on the roster a lot of times the team is trying to find the guy they think has a 0.000002% chance of ever being anything over the guy they think only has a 0.00001% chance. (Yes, I made up those numbers... you all get my point. Please, no one quote me asking for my analysis to support the 0.00001%. Hyperbole = exaggeration for emphasis.)

It's easy to see where his skill set would translate because of how much success slot receivers have had with McDaniels. But keep in mind that was with a QB whose game definitely translated more to throwing to that type of receiver. The archetype of player and route tree for the slot position may well end up being different for Maye than it was Brady.

It's hard for me to really foresee anything out of him beyond maybe sticking again on the back of the roster, but that's why you have training camp. We'll see what he does.

Jerry Rice is a pipe dream.

I'd be happy if he could even approach Anquan Boldin numbers.

Boldin overachieved despite only running a 4.71 at the 2003 NFL Combine.

The thing is that his playing speed was also noticeably slow. Like One-If-By-Sea pointed out a few posts above, his kick returns were painful to watch. That’s why he lost the KR job after 3-4 games.

If you lose your KR job to a JAG like D’Ernest freaking Johnson, well, you’re on thin ice as a WR6 if you can’t play STs.

The reality is that he’s gonna face an uphill battle making the team this year as I’m sure we’re going to draft at least a couple of WRs to compete for WR4 thru WR6. Plus we might still bring in Brown before camp starts.

I don't know that anyone has handed Chism the Slot Receiver role or even a spot on the 53-man roster. The Patriots have added some key pieces that should make Kick Returns even better. Particularly if Gilliam is the lead guy in front of whomever is returning.

Why are you "sure we're going to draft at least a couple of WRs"? With Doubs, Boutte, Williams, and Hollins as the top 4, I whole-heartedly disagree that the Pats are going to use 2 draft picks on WR. I could see them drafting ONE guy in the mid to late rounds and maybe adding another as a UDFA.

With the talk of Brown still and Wolf mentioning that Diggs might still return, I highly doubt the Pats will use more than 1 draft pick. They are just too much of a commodity to waste on a player who's chance of making the team is already stacked. Especially when the Pats seem to be moving toward a heavier amount of Running with the additions of Gilliam and Hill

Unfortunately I don't think Chism has a chance of being on the 53 . Maybe he will be on PS . I doubt any team will take him considering the speed. He might be a good fit for teams with wr1 and wr2 like rams . He could be a 500 yard / 3 TD contributor when lined up in zone . He could have a long career as wr4/5. But we can't be wasting snaps hoping for him to catch up.

Not at all. I would like to know what they're trading for AJ Brown though (trade effective post 6/1). 1st this year or next year or less or not at all. I'm very anxious about it, probably won't sleep until the end of April.

I'm holding out for Tee Higgins still. Haven't slept in over a year.

Really not sure where he stands. Yes, he's slow, but he seems to be a pretty good blocker for a WR, and he seems to be too strong for most CBs guarding him to tackle solo.

Plus he had 4 catches for 95 yards, which is nuts given how slow he's supposed to be.
3 of those receptions were against the Jets and Miami. The 4th was against the Chargers in the WC game.

2 catches against the Jets for 40 yards. 24 YAC
1 catch against Miami for 35 yards. 16 YAC.
1 catch against the Chargers for 20 yards. 4 YAC.

It's something, but you have to take into consideration who they were playing for 75 of the yards.

Kind of weird how people are stuck on 40 time when it’s not much slower than Cooper Kupp or Wes Welker and the fact that close to 70% of slot receiver routes are run within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Chism is a much better fit for this offense than DD.
I don’t think either will become more than a complementary piece of the offense next year, but Chism did have really good short area drills like 3 cone and has shown the ability to get open.

I’m definitely not dismissing him because of the speed

I still think ultimately, the Patriots receiver room will look like this (starter listed first):

X - AJ Brown (still think the trade will eventually happen), Kyle Williams
Z - Kayshon Boutte (he is more suited for the possession receiver role), Mack Hollins
Slot - Doubs (but like Diggs last year, he will move around to all three positions), Pop Douglas

Why do people like yourself insist that Doubs is, all of a sudden, going to be a primary slot guy?
In 4 years:

2022 - 426 outside / 97 Slot /6 backfield
2023 - 800 outside / 128 slot / 10 backfield
2024 - 620 outside / 73 slot / 2 backfield
2025 - 708 outside / 115 slot / 8 backfield
Totals: 2554 outside / 413 slot / 26 backfield = 2993 snaps.

Outside - 85.3% outside
Inside - 13.8% inside
Backfield - 1.1% backfield.

Yet, The Pats are going to change that and move him inside predominantly? I whole-heartedly disagree.

I think they are much more likely to rotate the 4 WRs they dress each game through the slot than have a dedicated slot person.

The one thing people noted is that Chism just gets open. The other thing about Chism is that he doesn't just fall over himself after the catch. The 44 YAC out of 95 is pretty surprising even if it is such a small sample size.

DD and Chism were both on the team last year and the team DECISIVELY felt DD was better. That's just absolute fact based on playing time. That doesn't mean that Chism can't eventually overtake him, but it's pretty bold to predict it based on how much better the team viewed DD last year. DD is also only 1 year older too, so it's not like he himself couldn't improve as much or more than Chism, though with more experience I guess you could argue he's closer to what he'll end up being already.
