Cool Link VIDEO: Efton Chism Getting After It

Links to cool things
Really not sure where he stands. Yes, he's slow, but he seems to be a pretty good blocker for a WR, and he seems to be too strong for most CBs guarding him to tackle solo.

Plus he had 4 catches for 95 yards, which is nuts given how slow he's supposed to be.
I think it’s gonna be difficult for him to make the team this season as I expect the Pats to draft a couple of WRs to try and develop playmakers for Maye. We just gave to wait and see how everything plays out this summer.

I am not a Chism fan, and hope I am wrong. I understand the difference between quickness and speed, Chism is quick, but not fast. His kickoff returns were painful to watch.

What I do not see acknowledged in Chism threads is that if a player can not run past a defender because they are too slow (like Chism), it is much easier for the defender to crowd the offensive player to limit their quick twitch separation. Although Edelman, Welker, and even C Kupp, were not fast guys, Chism is the slowest of them all.

I have also seen it argued that only the 10 yard split is important for a slot receiver. Although there is some truth to that, if the defender only has to worry about 10 yards the defensive assignment is much easier. For example, I think M Jones can easily shut down Chism, and that is the type of defender Chism will have to routinely defeat.

For the 1000 Chism fans on PatsFans, please don't read my post and think I am attacking your first born child because I am not a Chism fan.
Typical ****ing know-it-all. Go suck some draftnik's ass, it's what you're good but slow at. Make fun of my love-child, **** you. Cognac drinking loser.

Not at all. I would like to know what they're trading for AJ Brown though (trade effective post 6/1). 1st this year or next year or less or not at all. I'm very anxious about it, probably won't sleep until the end of April.

I agree with what you have stated. I would add one factor that could help a guy like Chism, body control. If he can get someone moving in a direction and rapidly change direction it will create a window. I watch the Celtics and although I think Payton Pritchard is quick I am amazed at watching a 6'1 guy drive against guys more than a half foot taller. He always gets them rolling one way and he stop on a dime or adjusts to create enough room to get off a shot. I think that's what Chism needs to be able to do to find consistent success.

If it’s post 6/1 the trade can’t happen until then so no possible way we could trade a pick in this year.’s draft because the draft will have already happened before the trade happens. You obviously need more sleep, so maybe snoozing until the end of April will help.

I agree. Pritchard already has the ball, Chism doesn't, so not only does Chism have to make the move, but Maye has to know what Chism is doing before Chism does it so the ball arrives on time and in the right place. Much harder to do than running traditional routes. Brady and Edelman did it, but it is tough, really tough, to sync up.

I want to go on record and say Chism will never be a real part of the offense. I hope I am wrong but I just don't see it.

I won't go that far - I'm just skeptical he's going to be Wes Welker. He does have good hands and decent size.

He could be something, but man is he ever slow. I don't ever need to see him returning a kickoff ever again.

Take every rep like it's your last. He'll never beat anyone in a foot race with YAC's but IMO he will be very good in the slot, short range, finding seams in the zone, moving the chains.
Pop Douglas does that same drill smoother and faster and still can't be consistent in our Offense.

Sure we can carry 9 WRs on the roster.

So you don’t think the Pats should address the WR position in the draft? It would be a disservice to Maye if they didn’t.

Here’s our WR breakdown IMO:

1. Doubs and Williams are locked in.

2. Hollins is safe.

3. Boutte is conditionally safe because he could still be a trade piece if we do pull the trigger on Brown.

4. Douglas and Chism are the ones that can certainly be upgraded and I feel the Pats will provide competition for them via the draft.

McDaniels and Drake have to emphasize and build their slot game this offseason. To beat the toughest defenses in the NFL you have to get the ball out quick, move the chains and win in short space. Drake seemingly only looked to the boundaries and the deep ball. We need some chain moving dink and dunk added to his game.

Chism at 5'11" is taller than Douglas at 5'8," and Drake simply couldn't or wouldn't see Douglas. I like Chism, he's a tough nosed player, gets open and catches the ball... shades of Welker, Amendola and Edelman with the prerequisite athleticism to become one of them.

We need an EFton of Chism, and I will root for this guy with my last breath just on the continued possibility of making that pun!

Also he's made the most of what chances he's had and he's scrappy - nobody's combine monster but he ain't effed up. A good piece to keep around

Cyrus Allen Cincinnati will make an IMPACT in the Slot 13 TD's last year.

I get why a lot of people have Chism as their binkie. But like others here, I just don't see it. He wasn't very good as a returner. He had his moments this past season, but it was fleeting. I think he will be a practice squader again next season. And if he was that good, someone would have poached him from the Patriots' practice squad.

I still think ultimately, the Patriots receiver room will look like this (starter listed first):

X - AJ Brown (still think the trade will eventually happen), Kyle Williams
Z - Kayshon Boutte (he is more suited for the possession receiver role), Mack Hollins
Slot - Doubs (but like Diggs last year, he will move around to all three positions), Pop Douglas

If AJ Brown is added, that flips the table and resets the depth chart. There's no rush to push Chism or any youngster into a starting role if that happens. But it might not happen...

So you start and play your best players. Why I like Chism? He did whatever was asked of him, he worked his tail off to make the active roster and contributed. He showed a tough nosed demeanor when he was returning kickoffs, blocking and I think back to that preseason game where he caught a pass and carried like three defenders an extra ten yards. For his size he is tough, he also has wiggle and gets open, he finds holes in the defense.

We need to improve the slot WR and utilize it more, having a good hands guy there would make this offense more consistent and rely less on Drake converting third and longs.
