Will Campbell Watch

I'm sure this will be the talk of the off-season. Wilson definitely needs to move to center. I don't see him as the left guard of the future. Less clear with Campbell (not saying he's not the future at LT) but I wouldn't mind at least seeing what he looks like at guard. If he is infact Mankins or Thuney-like, it would be an interesting decision.

I hope he can get better with an offseason with our coaches. But even if he never becomes a franchise LT, he can still be a great G.

Thuney shifted to LT for the Bears when their LT got hurt. I believe he did with the Chiefs for a game or two as well. He's a great player who can fill in at LT but is a better G. Campbell could be that kind of player for us.

There is a reason why there aren't a lot of great LTs with short arms. It's a physical limitation that can be overcome but it's still a disadvantage against elite edge players.

I'm not trying to trash Campbell or act like he can't play LT. So please don't take it like that.

But people who keep writing off Campbell and the team's struggles in these 3 games as "well those guys are good and beat everyone" need to also apply proper context. Will Anderson had 3 sacks last week. He had a career high 12 in the regular season. 3 sacks in a game is a 51 sack pace. Myles Garret set an NFL record with 23 sacks, but the 5 he had in the game vs. us is an 85 sack pace. The guy we and Campbell really struggled with against LAC was Odafe Oweh who had 3 sacks himself.

It's one thing to struggle with the best players. That's normal. The level to which Campbell specifically and our overall team has is well beyond normal. I get that the best players are going to do some damage against you, that's what makes them the best players. But the level of performance that Campbell and our overall team have allowed against these guys is well beyond what is acceptable even adjusted for that. If every time you face one of the better pass rushers you're spotting them 3+ sacks then that's not someone who will last at LT. We can't just write off THIS level of performance as the other guy being good.
Half empty or half full ... Truth in both

You need to understand that Maye holds the ball a lot more than other QBs waiting for deep play to evolve and he does not throw away . Hence he takes more sacks but he also has the most number of deep passes and deep pass TDs of the lot. It's a necessary evil . They cannot blitz because our zone guys will kill them if they do it. 4 man rush with elite pass rushers will get to Maye more often than not .

Next year when Maye improves internal clock by 0.25 seconds and the oline give Maye an extra 0.25 seconds we will be untouchable. For now we live by the sword and die by it...

I just hope he’s smart enough about it and doesn’t overtrain before his MCL is fully healed.

The Patriots under Vrabel have been really careful with their players, I'm sure they will monitor everyone recovering from injury.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they announced an ongoing injury to Campbell after the Super Bowl.
Dumb penalty today.. It happens. But overall I think Campbell was the right pick and will grow from this year and be a great LT for the Patriots for years to come.

Future Pats HOFer type guy imo. The guys hating on him will be clapping years from now, if they're alive to see it. Jmo

but then why not go to the backup who held up incredibly well during the starter's absence? it makes no sense

He was absolutely not good today. Watch the friggin film. But, he wasn’t alone. Line in general wasn’t good.

Gotta hope for Rams because they don’t have a fearsome front seven.

I thought Maye had a clean pocket enough times to generate some offense (he did not).
Campbell by my count allowed 4 pressures, including a miscommunication with Wilson allowing Roach a free lane at Maye. should have been a TD on a wheel route to Stevenson. Maye overthrew him because of the pressure
Campbell with no sacks allowed
Maye with deep drops, has the DE's going wide on the OT's knowing where Maye will be.
not sure thats the fault of the OT's.

yep, struggled with Myles Garrett (two-time DPOY), Khalil Mack (former DPOY who can still dial it up) and Will Anderson (will be runner-up DPOY and will probably win one at some point). In Will we trust.

hes playing coming off a grade 3 MCL sprain/tear in his rookie season... that affects his entire game, and especially his lateral movement... and coming off that injury he has had to face the best edge rushers and dts in the game...

that point gets overlooked, and is significantly down played in just about every criticism of Will Campbell...

is he playing at his best right now? no, he isn't... you can tell he is playing hurt...

the call to move him to guard is a tad bit early imo ... ymmv

He was better. Given the conditions thats all you can hope for.
Last game, biggest game. Lets see how that will go before writing him off.

I think long term we will be served better when Campbell confidence is restored and he plays out of his mind and body to be a top 5 LT in the league we saw what confidence and trust can do to stevenson.

Vrabes doing the same to Campbell. Let's trust his process. We have reached the Superbowl with Campbell and hopefully win number 7 with him too.

He gets two additional weeks of rest after 3 weeks of acclimatization to insane pass rushers. It should give him time to heal physically, mentally and also prepare well on both fronts. Lots of time to watch tape and just prepare for 1 opponent .

Against Seattle, we are going to get a lot more pressure from the inside than from the outside. I think Will will hold up fine against the Seahawks DE's. It's Wilson and Bradbury I am more worried about.

He got embarassed on that one play where Maye just barely got the pass off. Otherwise I didn’t notice him much which is typically a good thing.

Campbell just went up against three of the top five defenses in the NFL. He struggled at times, but IMO he played well considering the talent he has been going up against throughout the playoffs. He is a rookie and expected to struggle at times. He only missed 4 games and we are going to the superbowl. He will be our left now and for at least the next 10 years.

He's been ok, with a mix of good and bad snaps, which is about what I expected coming off injury.

But the dude needs to work on his cut blocking technique for sure. Every attempt is completely ineffective. On some plays he's doing it to keep defenders' hands out of throwing lanes and he really just flops at their feet and it just doesn't compromise their ability to get in the lane whatsoever.

Then there was a snap in traditional pass pro and he lunged at the defender's legs and barely impeded the dude's progress to the quarterback. Cut blocks have their place on quick throws but they're really not something you want to see from tackles, especially if the technique is going to be that bad. I don't know if that's what he's being coached to do or if he just feels it's his only chance to get the job done, but es no bueno.

All I know is Drake isn't having to run for his life anymore, obviously the entire protection scheme gets credit for that of which Campbell is a part.
