Are we playing with house money?

Denver HFA or not, house money went out the window after Nix got injured. Patriots have the much better QB. The defense is playing at an extremely high level. The weather excuse (right now) is not applicable on Sunday. Losing won't =a failed season. It would be an extremely dissapointing end though. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. They would start at the bottom with everyone else. Also, losing would probably be the result of TO's. Meaning, certain guys on offense learned nothing from the past two games.

I will go a step further and say it might be easier to accept a SB loss to one of those powerhouse NFC teams than losing this game.

I'm talking about myself. I don't have to give myself a heart attack this year, and that's a nice feeling.

I don't buy the "house money" concept for a minute. This seems to suggest the assumption of more shots at a Lombardi down the road. That might never happen (ask a Bills fan).

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to be a fan of this team is going all-in -- ESPECIALLY when an unexpected gift is laid at your feet.

This is 2015 all over again which we can't take for granted. That was a brutal loss even with the injuries. Pats are a lot healthier this time and are playing against a QB who hasn't played in a meaningful game in his career. No arm Manning was still a veteran QB who did all his damage early. Pats have to put the heat on Stidham early and send a message. I'm hoping Vrabel elects to kick if they win the toss.

Losing to a former backup in Stidham this board **** on would be a major letdown. We don't want this to turn into a 2009 Ravens game where Flacco didn't have to throw many passes. But I'm fully prepared his going to do his best to play outside of what he's normally capable of (AJ Feeley in 2004 and 2007) and make the Pats sweat if they don't take him seriously.

I could accept a loss if Nix were playing, but not Stidham.
This.

I also think the league would prefer that the Patriots won. No matter who they played, they are fully capable of beating either NFC team. Would be a close game throughout. If Denver wins this game they will go to Santa Clara and get obliterated by the Rams or Seahawks. That would be a neutral field against a much better team.

I'm beyond ecstatic with where we are. Way beyond expectations. That said, it's hard to get to the Super Bowl, even in the best of circumstances, so let's take advantage of our situation. Let the Cinderella run continue!

This. The league is littered with teams who got close, lost, and did not repeat the original success. Patriots & Chiefs were the outliers. Not the norm.

No we aren't anymore. We are in the AFCCG against a team without a starting QB. You are so unlikely to ever have this happen again that you have to capitalize on it. Even if we keep building or sustain being good, there's a better chance that we will have to go through the Bills, Chiefs, Ravens or a rebuilt Bengals with Burrow before getting this again.

It will be such a mis opportunity to not drain every drop of water from this well.

This.

The Patriots could/will improve the roster. But so will those teams. If they won a SB this year and struggled the next few, fans would probably accept that. But they don't want to be the next Commanders.

The belief that football teams improve incrementally and get better each year is not true. They will compete against 31 teams for the resources to get better. 16 will improve 16 will digress. At 14-3 you are more likely to digress than not.

Ah yes we really are back in 2003. All we’re missing now is complaining about the tuck rule lol

That was 80 seconds of him saying nothing, just be loud and claim they are lucky... no actual examples of their luck, nothing but a blowhard *******. I hope I get to see his meltdown if and when Drake hoists a Lombardi this year.

1) yes

2) no

both can be true

yes, house money: I predicted a 9-12 win season, hoped for a WC game, and i was at the top end of most predictions, i can recall here and elsewhere those of us in that upper end were getting called out a bit for having rose colored glasses.....so yeah, way exceeded expectations, we are outplaying our overall roster talent/depth/experience for sure

no in that the goal for every team, every year, should be to win championships......while that isn't always the case (some inept franchises out there, some who are happy with a winning season without making that push for the lombardi, as it makes money), it is the reason why everyone plays......so falling short of that goal is always a let down

if they happen to lose the AFC championship, i'll feel like **** mondy no doubt.......might even avoid social media for a few days........but in looking back on the season once perspective is restored, i think i'd be pretty happy with how it went and how it should be a harbinger for continued & sustained success/contention once again

I love how this is already making the mediots and fans of other teams crazy. If we win in Denver, that's 12 Super Bowls out of 60, and 7 this century.

I don't have an evil laugh very often, but when I do....

That's my point. The Patriots will improve the roster. But so will other teams. They will regress. The question is how much.

They MAY regress.
They are in a place where there is more room to regress than improve, because they are14-3, but that doesn’t mean they will.

Like, how badly do we need this really? Is this season already a success regardless of what happens?

Seems to me like we're not supposed to be here. Not from the league's standpoint, or from the team's preseason goals. This was supposed to be a year where the team got experience, learned how to work together, and ramped up towards future championship runs. We're here ahead of schedule, and the developmental gains from our youth movement have been obvious to all.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the haters screaming about how the hell we're back here only 6 years after we won our last one. I rejoice at the lamentation of the Bills fans in particular, and all the others that were genuinely hoping we could be contained. The tears are delicious, and they're really hoping that they can talk crap with us if we fall short this year, but at this point there's nothing they can really say. We got further than most of them. We made more noise than I bet most of us thought we would already. If we fall in the CCG or the Superbowl, then we went from bottom 4 to top 4 in a single year. Most of the usual suspects don't have a single leg to stand on, so the haters still won't be able to say a damn thing.

I mean, I do want to win this thing, but it just feels to me like the pressure to do or die isn't there, at least not for me. The players haven't won one yet, Vrabel hasn't won one as a coach, I expect them to be hungry, I'm not worried about that, I expect them to play with heart, hunger and rage and I have no doubts about that. I'm talking about myself. I don't have to give myself a heart attack this year, and that's a nice feeling.

Now plunge the dagger into the hater's hearts and do the thing that will make this from satisfying to hilarious. Go play a game of football, you guys know how to do that, and that's all this is. No pressure at all, it's just a game of football like all the others.
It’s an absolute golden opportunity that doesn’t happen often at all for most teams. This season has been a resounding success but it would absolutely be a disappointment to not be in the Super Bowl given the path and how good the team has played.

We have a top 3 QB, a defense playing lights out, a great coach. They can and should be in the big game.

The regular season record does not matter as much as long as they get a top two seed & injuries are not to key guys.

There's a difference between expectations and hoping.
If you can honestly say that at the beginning of the season that your expectations fot this team were to win the AFC and win the Super Bowl, then I guess this hasn't been a fun season for you.
For me it's like I walked into a casino, hit the jackpot, took the money and invested 75% in the stock market. Then I returned to the casino and have been playing and buying drinks for everyone.
Ranking my favorite Patriots team is like ranking your kids. I would say that this is one of the more likable and fun Patriots teams of all time.

Not totally comparable. But the Lightning, Capitals, and Penguins all got eliminated in the first round in 2019. The Bruins beat lesser teams in Columbus & Carolina to get to the Final. They lost to St. Louis in 7 games. 3/4 of the losses were at home vs a team many thought the Bruins were better than. I remember reading the predictions and most had Boston winning.

Difference is the Patriots best players are much younger than the stars on that team. And the Patriots do not have a history of consistently choking/falling short like the Bruins. But the point remains. It's unlikely they will get to face a backup QB in an AFC title game again. Baltimore, KC, and Cincinnati (maybe) will likely be back and better next year. The Bills could see a renaissance with a new HC.

Strike now while the iron is hot.

In my opinion...obviously. They have exceeded even my wildest expectations for this year. I would probably question the sanity of anyone who predicted this much success in Year One of a rebuild for a team that had back-to-back four win seasons. I would also like to ask them for their lottery picks

Shame on me, I didn't read any comments before adding my two cents (so this is might be a duplicate of others)....

Here's my take, YES, the season is ABSOLUTELY a success! After two 4 win seasons and a toxic locker room from last year, I honestly thought they needed one more 'warm up season'. How I honestly thought things would go.....

Pats would have 6 or 7 wins but the most important thing for the season would be all about the development of Drake Maye. If we got 7 wins and Maye was progressing in his second year, I would have taken that as a GOOD SEASON.

So given that 'low bar' there is no way I can look back and say losing in the AFC Championship game was a failure! That would be insane. I forget which radio show host said this in the past, but getting to the conference championship game in any sport is a successful year. From there it's usually four deserving teams and a crapshoot over who actually comes out on top.

Now because of these specific circumstances (with Nix's injury) this certainly would add to the STING if we do lose, and yes while it would be rough in the moment and we'd be thinking about the 'what if's or 'should haves' IT WOULD STILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON.

Think about it this way, the heartbreak of a loss on Sunday does not change all the joy we have had from September to last week....that STILL HAPPENED.
