Stiddy discussion

Stidham is so good that he couldn't beat out Mac Jones or the corpse of Cam Newton for a starting job in the 2020/2021 seasons. Then he went to Vegas and couldn't beat Derek Carr, and then went to Denver and couldn't beat the corpse of Russell Wilson, and then last year/this year was passed up by Bo Nix who is just a slightly improved Mac Jones.
1) BB's decision making had so severely jumped the shark, and I remember at the time it was really ridiculous that Stidham didn't get time in over Cam at the end. I think it was the whole stubborn Butler-esque going to a wedding in the summer and Cam's needing to hit contract milestones.
2) Derek Carr was fairly good. 4 PBs 3rd in MVP voting.
3) Russell Wilson won a SB and went to 8 out of 9 PBs before that season. No way he wasn't riding starting.
4) Physically, he's a slightly improved Mac Jones but from what I saw predraft, the guy mentally couldn't be any more different (from Patriots MacEnroe version - he's prob in a better place now, tho).

That being said, there is something to a guy with no recent tape, but for all intensive porpoises [sic], this really should be an absolute bloodbath for the D (esp with McD on staff) unless the Pats fail to acclimate to the altitude.

Highlights from last season:

Dude was a pick 6 machine here. Also remember he wasn't great under pressure going all the way back to Auburn.... case in point 11 sacks against Clemson. Hope that's the guy we see on Sunday. Has a good arm though and can run once in a while.

Honest question cause I haven't watched much of him since he left... how good is he now compared to other backups or starters in the league? I imagine he's better than Dobbs or what we saw yesterday from Stroud but that's probably not a high bar.

Ur funny dude. I remember trying to convince you that he doesn't suck, but in the end the dude really really does suck.

The question is gonna be whether or not the lack of recent tape is gonna turn him into Uncle Rico for a game or 2.

Without in any way dismissing Stidham, I’m not convinced preseason is a really accurate gage of anything. Chism looked like prime Wes Welker in preseason.

Bigger worry will be Denver’s defense, which has been good and Mile High, which has been a formidable factor
Rookie Chism is already infinitely better than rookie Welker. He'll prob need "extra help" to get to prime levels.

Lol. I didn't mean to hate on the guy I just didn't want to jump right on his bandwagon without seeing a lot more... Brady turning from a late round pick into a megastar didn't mean anyone on the Pats bench would follow the same path. It was the same with Zappe.

Cant take anyone for granted in the NFL, that being said, Id be offended if this defense allowed Stiddy to drive on them

He’s not very good no matter how you slice it. I’m sure Payton will have a good game plan for him. The question will be can he execute it? He’ll make some throws. Stroud made some throws. But that’s not going to be enough to win for them. Sooner or later, Stidham will have to make a play or two.

Payton will have a plan and he will make some throws - but then Vrabel and Kuhr will adjust and take those away. Will Stidham be able to adjust on the fly as well?

Zolak said this morning that McDaniels' knowledge of Stidham isn't a help because Payton's system is completely different.

Yes, but McDaniels is aware of what kind of throws Stidham can make, and what kind he can't make. So throws are throws.

Yeah, exactly. Their offense relied on Nix running the ball a fair amount. Stidham doesn’t have that kind of mobility. I’m not sure how much adjustment will be possible with Stidham out there.

Josh McDaniels knows Stiddy's weaknesses intimately. So I agree from a talent perspective Nic to Stiddy is not a big drop, but we have detailed intel on how defend Stiddy which makes it a greater drop off from Nix.
That's right.

Plus, the current Pats regime scouted Stiddy as a backup QB for this season and chose Dobbs instead...

This is complete and utter crap. I am not saying Nix is HOF material quite yet, but he is not a career 2-3 stringer either. Nix to Stid is a massive drop and anyone who claims its not is clueless. Sean Payton would laugh you out of his building.

For comparison, the drop off between Nix & Stidham is similar to Alex Smith & Gardner Minshew/Case Keenum. Not huge, but significant enough to win with if your play calling it’s top notch. Either way, every QB listed here is a trailer QB…no tractor QBs here..

In fairness, he did beat out Russell Wilson. The team just avoided the crapstorm it would have caused had they made the move earlier. Wilson made me actively dislike him by the end of that, in spite of the fact that he appears to be a decent guy. Just stupid QB play - such a dumpster fire. Stidham ended up starting the last two games, and they cut Wilson after the season was over - eating what I think was the biggest cap hit in NFL history.

And, for what it's worth, he absolutely tore it up in preseason. And he's now been in Payton's system for three years.

Don't get me wrong. I have absolutely no idea what we're going to see. But I would be cautious with assuming it's going to be garbage.

With Nix as QB the Broncos were in many close games the last 2 years
One thing Nix had was he was clutch in crunch time
That’s a special trait that not many QB’s have and what scared me the most about Nix
If Stidham can play well enough for 3 quarters
Will he be clutch with the game on the line
Not that it’s impossible
But if he had that trait he would be someone’s starter by now

Maybe this has been stated already... The most recent memories of stidham all coalesce around one statement... "Cam newton is our starting quarterback" the cam newton with a bum shoulder who could barely throw the ball anymore...

I am not buying this at all. Nix has been a very good leader and is not just a step above a career backup.
