Patriots trade Hollister to the Seahawks

7th round picks are about the cheapest roster spots you can get. Often less expense than UDFA’s.

7th-round picks are certainly cheap, but UDFAs are cheaper.

Each team is allotted a modest amount of cash above rookie minimum, roughly equal to the slotted bonus of a 7th-round pick, for their entire UDFA class. If a team really wants to lure in an especially desirable UDFA they can guarantee part of their salary, but by and large UDFAs make minimum salary, period.

EDIT: For example, last year 7th-round pick Keion Crossen got a $75k bonus, priority UDFA J.C. Jackson got $10K.

This year 2019 UDFA LB Hall is being guaranteed $80K ($70K of his salary is guaranteed as well as his $10K bonus).

Yep. Ironically, even a UDFA as sought after as Hall can only cost as much as a late 7th rounder if he doesn't make the team!

I guess I view it this way. Outside of QB, a good two-way TE is the most valuable player you can have on offense. BB saw it with Bavaro and kept spending real assets on it when the rest of the league was undervaluing it (plan for Kyle Brady in 1995; Graham, Watson, Gronk).

But there are only a few of those guys. Most TEs are tweeners. Guys who aren’t good enough blockers to be on the OL, but aren’t good enough and fast enough pass catchers to be wide receivers. I view it like outfielders who have the range and speed of left fielders and the bats of center fielders.

So if you can’t get what you really want because they’re now being drafted top 10 instead of late 1st, then why settle for cheap knockoffs? Get an actual big WRs who can play in the slot and potentially on the line instead of an imitation “move TE”. If your blocking TE only had Dwayne Allen’s receiving capabilities and the opponent doesn’t respect him when in the passing pattern, why not use an OLineman instead?

All things being equal you’d rather have the two way TE. But if you can’t, well, let’s see what fruit this approach may bear.

Yep.
What a valuable commodity to have because of the uncertainty it can cause on a D. A dual threat TE brings a unique matchup/defensive challenge that sucks if we don't have one for 2019. Now can we get by without it, thrive otherwise? Sure. An area of 'lesser' can be overcome with an area of greater potency (the Patriots got by with pure passing potency multiple seasons). But anyone discounting a TE like this because there's not a lot of good ones (2018 = 12 TE's that had 50/500 or better) is missing the forest because of the trees.

Now are we totally without hope at TE? No. ASJ in 2017 had 50 receptions in 13 games on an O that was probably among the worst with a commensurate matching lesser QB. If ASJ had played 16 he would, extrapolating, have had 60+ for the season (though an anemic YPC of approx. 8 yds). From a receptions standpoint that'd put him around 7th for 2018 TEs. And one stat I saw suggests ASJ can block (for size comparison: Gronkowski 6' 6" 265. ASJ 6' 5" 262. ASJ is stout). This is ASJ's moment! an incredible opportunity to be on the winning-est team, a team laser focused on getting players to be as productive as they can be, a team that always is among tops in the league for passing, and he's the only real vet TE on the team (at least as of right now). So if ASJ is laser focused serious about wanting to be a top 10 dual threat TE (and get a cha-ching contract starting in 2020) this is it: eat-sleep-drink practice & film now until camp. There's no doubt in my mind that if the Patriots don't add a known vet TE(BB may find a way) ASJ will certainly be given the opp to be a known name at the TE spot (I'd suggest he change his name to Yo Soy Fiesta Mejor :)).

Patriots wanted to make sure that they have enough 7th round picks to move up for a kicker next year.

But UDFAs don't have to sign with you. 7th round picks do or they have to sit out the year..

Bill is just trying to get the league loosened up for a little trading. He knows he is sending a bag of practice balls that is never going to amount to a draft choice. He thinks it is smart to swap players around to shape your team and good trades are where both sides benefit. Other GM's know it is wise to swap players, but they are just wary that Bill is smarter than them at the game.

I’m guessing that a guy like Stephen Anderson (or choose your own player) can take over his place on special teams units. And he can actually contribute something in the passing game.

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear...

Buffalo Springfield..

Prediction: Assuming a TE trade/ acquisition doesn’t happen & ASJ stays healthy, he will do very well in this offense & surprise a lot of people.

Mr Anderson > >> Hollister

I assume with 3 QBs and 5 RBs being likely on the 53 roster we would only carry 2 TEs anyway so that makes it even more unlikely for him and I assume next to ASJ and LaCosse, Stephen Anderson would be in front of him as well. So you are talking about the 4th or 5th TE on the roster.

I know Hollister is a different type of player, but people do realize Ryan Izzo made last year's opening 53 while being injured in tougher competition than now.

Six pages of TE discussion on a team with only four tight ends on the roster and Izzo's barely mentioned as possibly being part of the Pats plan for 2019.

Can he? Play Power Ball instead, better odds.

I liked Hollister, but my god, he got hurt every time he played in a game.

The moment LaCosse and Anderson got signed to the roster it was clear that Hollister was in all likelihood done. Surprised that they got a seventh round pick out of it.

Who are our joint practices against in training camp this year? Tennessee and Detroit? If they have anyone young and cheap I wouldn’t be surprised if we swing a trade over the summer.

Surprised it isn't conditional.

I think Seattle will end up getting the better end of this trade.
Hollister is gifted athletically had been included in Brady's circle of trust before he was hurt and was bulking up last year and physically looked more Gronklike.
I don't hate the trade for us, it's clear he couldn't be counted on here but a giant but he stays healthy he could be a valuable piece for the Hawks.
Laws of averages says he gets injured again so it was 100 percent the right move.
