2019 NE CAP SPACE

2.5m now which is more or less enough to sign the draft class depending on which of the early picks they actually use. Add in the Brady restructure that has been leaked and there will most probably be at least another move (Mason ?) coming to get to the usual around 8-10m of space going into the season.

As we know we can't restructure TB12 until August so that kind of sucks. BB will figure something out or is at least working on it, trying. It takes both sides (team and player) to agree though. There's a couple of other players that will likely re-structure but they have to wait as well.

I don't think we know anything. At this point we have heard so many different versions when it comes to the TB12 extension.. who knows when they can officially do it. Internally all the moves are most probably already long done.

It is pretty clear that they have a move up in their hands for whenever money is actually necessary.

I could be wrong but I thought I read on here that TB12 restructured his contract last August and you can't restructure (whether it's a restructure or an extension) again for at least 12 months. It's why nothing has happened. Same goes for Gilmore, whose contract could be guaranteed for next season but that can't be done until TCamp or later. Maybe it was all a dream.

There is a lot of fussing about a Brady extension. For me, I just presume that this would be used as part of the reserve needed as we enter the season, if at all. August is fine.
=========
EXTENSIONS
These contracts are often difficult. After all, the player might want to wait to consider free agency. So, again, for me, I choose to ignore extensions at the moment.
==========
RESTRUCTURES
This simply means signing a new contract for same compensation as the current contract, and moving the 2019 salary and some bonuses into a new signing bonus. Often players are willing to do this, as there is no downside, and they get their money faster, and have some protection against being injured in camp.

There are LOTS of potential restructures. The top EIGHT add up to $19.3M of cap space. Of course, the effect is to move cap money into 2020 and later years. Considering that our 2020 cap space is currently about $85M, these opportunities are much more reasonable than in recent years.

$5.7M Gilmore
$3.6 Bennett
$3.0 Hightower
$3.0 Cannon
$2.6 Mason
$0.8 Harmon
$0.8 White
$0.8 Guy
--------
$19.3M total available, not counting several smaller opportunities

All these bonuses/pay raises being handed out, where is Edelman's?
Why do you care? If Edelman thinks it's a big deal, I'm sure he'll make it a big deal.

This. People are concerned because they want to be concerned.

On Brady, I've read that there is no timing restriction because last year's adjustment didn't add money to the contract.

Because Edelman has given his blood, sweat and tears for this organization and has been paid like a 5th string WR his entire career?

If they're tossing free bonus money around to players, it would make sense to give your Superbowl MVP some of that coin

What is Miguel's latest cap number, and what contracts are excluded (Dorsett?, Ryan?)?

I don't use Twitter and the latest on BSJ is out of date (excludes 6 contracts).

As the person who updates the BSJ cap pages I will just say I have never been six contracts behind.

On Brady, I've read that there is no timing restriction because last year's adjustment didn't add money to the contract.

Early last week Greg Bedard reported in BSJ that those “most involved” in the Brady negotiations didn’t think it could be completed before August.

His report did not cite a reason, but the speculation is that it involves Section 8 of the CBA which governs contract renegotiations. It states that a player can’t have his “salary” increased twice in the same calendar year.

Brady’s contract was tweaked last August to include $4 million of LTBE incentives. He did not earn the incentives, so it can be argued his “salary” was not increased which is the opinion of Miguel. But, the CBA doesn’t specifically address the situation, so the only opinion that really matters is the opinion of the League reviewing the contract for approval.

I’m thinking the Patriots believe the League would not approve the contract and are choosing to wait. There really is no hurry as there are a multitude of ways to clear cap space as needed.

He's more than capable of handling that on his own. He doesn't need you to White Knight for him.

This is just sportstalk radio nonsense.

Thanks buddy, I was under the impression that he really needed my help in a big way...

That's what I was saying. We have read explanations for why he can and also for why he can't be extended before whenever those incentives were added last year. Nobody is entirely sure about it because the language in the rules is kinda unclear about "contract modifications within a year". Remember, Amendola did it twice within a year. @Kenneth Sims explained it in a longer way a few post above.

The reason why nothing has happened can be that. But it can also be a lack of a reason to do it right now. If you don't do anything with the space right now what is the point of having it ? It is not like they are gonna pay any bills until offseason workout bonuses start getting hit / drafted players sign a contract.

Just curious—how many restructures/can kicking deals do we normally see from the Patriots every season? With all of these hypothetical cap-freeing scenarios from multiple players that have been thrown around, I’d be interested in seeing the list of restructures that they’ve done over the last 5 or so years. It must include dozens and dozens of examples.

Also, last I had checked they only had 29 players under contract for 2020, and all of the following key (top) players were missing: Brady, Gronkowski, McCourty, Gostkowski, and Edelman. That’s going to take that 85m down significantly, and by the time they have enough players signed to field an actual team it’s going to likely be around 30m or so. Kicking the pacts down into next year isn’t going to seem like such a great idea if they do it with more than a couple of players.

Per @FieldYates, the Patriots have created $5.67 million in cap space for 2019 by converting $8.5 million of CB Stephon Gilmore's $9.5 million base salary into a signing bonus. That will increase Gilmore's salary-cap charges in 2020 and 2021, but provides some current relief.

That has to equate to a Gost signing today, possibly as well as one of Humber/McClellan in the near future. Aside from that, they should be good until Brady’s extension.

Don’t see much reason for any other restructures, since this should take care of immediate needs plus provide money for either a mid tier player or the rookie pool. The Brady extension will add to the surplus for in-season signings.

Gilmore's cap numbers:

2019: $9,670,833 >>> I did it again >>>> Correct number $9,170,833

2020: $18,670,833 ----- >
SAVINGS
IF YOU CUT HIM WE WILL SAVE $3,329,167

2021: $19,670,833
SAVINGS
IF YOU CUT HIM WE WILL SAVE $12,000,000
