Report: Ryan Mallett Traded to Houston for late pick

For those who said a high comp pick for losing Talib...doesn't signing Revis put a damper on how high that pick is ?

No. Players who get cut are not part of the formula.

Bill has been seriously trolling this whole board for the last seven months lol.

A conditional 2016 7th? That does kind of suck ass.

Thanks for the clarification on Revis everyone....

I'll now go sit in the corner with my dunce cap on

That is all you are going to get. More importantly it allows a roster spot for someone who might actually....see the field.

Also with only 2 QBs assuming they stay at 2 I would think it gives JG more snaps, more work, more attention and ultimately allows him to develop quicker.

This was a bad bad deal for the patriots. They may as well have let him become a fa after making him a backup all that time. This was a bad trade for the patriots because bill wasted a draft pick in a loaded draft on mallett in hopes mallet could be traded for more. That pick could have been used as part of a trade up in that draft for watt or Quinn or Julio Jones or aj green.Or been used on Justin Houston or jurell Casey. Mallet still could be a good qb with an established #1 WR and a center and RG where he doesn't have to throw right after the snap
Whew. For a while there I was concerned about this trade, but after reading Craig's analysis, I'm now convinced it must be the right thing for the team. .

I was one who always thought that the Pats would get that big payoff for Mallett. I personally thought Cleveland made a HUGE mistake not trading for Mallett instead of picking a 27 year old rookie late in the 3rd, who turned out to be so bad, I can't even remember his name. Mallett was a much better prospect in likely would have cost less. That was the best opportunity to do a deal.

As each year passed my expectations lowered. They lowered simply because Mallett never got a chance to play meaningful minutes in a real game, and the fact, he NEVER seemed to move the team consistently in the preseason. So even though he's had some nice moments, that's all they ever were....moments.

I think there is still a chance for him to blossom if he gets a chance, but even a homer like me wouldn't give him better than a 50/50 chance. So in the end the Pats get 3 years of a back up QB and a 6th round pick for training him. Garapolo simply showed more potential than Ryan's big arm, just like Brady did in his 2nd camp. The best guy usually get's the roster spot with BB, this camp it was Jimmy G (which still doesn't explain the JAMES White move. )

I was fine with it being a 6th and hoping maybe it could upgrade to a 5th. But it being a max of a 6 is disappointing. I'd have kept him instead of that.

Kept him? To what purpose? Spite?
BB & most here at Patsfans felt JAG this summer equaled or outperformed The Hammer's entire 3 years.
Why take up a roster spot for your #3 QB? Teams that do that view the #3 as a developmental guy. Not a guy who leaves next spring to FA. That last spot could someday be a player. Troy Brown, etc.

Have you looked at all the 6th & 7th rounders on the Patriots today?

That seems bizarre to me. The Pats could have let Mallett walk in FA and likely gotten a 2016 7th round comp pick. Weird.

There's no guarantee there. At least this is guaranteed and frees up a roster spot.

Think of it this way. You are trading Mallet (who would have never played) for a guy like Tyms or Butler. Guys who not only could play, make an impact, but possibly develop into solid players.

Exactly. I don't think the "guarantee" of a 2016 7th is work very much, so the Pats obviously wanted to dump Mallett and free up a roster spot.

That compensation does make it clear that they would have cut him otherwise.

Meanwhile, over on Texans messageboards right now the emerging theme is "I have no clue if Mallett's any good, but he can't possibly be any worse than what we had."

I think we all tend to overvalue the trade value of our players. I never thought RM showed us much and he will not show the Texans much IMHO. With BB a 6th is really currency to move around in the draft. More options and flexibility. Yes, a 4th or 5th would be nice and worth more currencywise but I think a 6th is not unreasonable for someone they probably intended to dump after see JG.

BTW this a rare post for me and I would like to thank all the terrific posters on this great site for always providing so much incite into our favorite team.

Bingo. BB knew he had SOME value but didn't want to cut him. In the end, he needed the roster spot.

Aiken will be resigned in 3...2...1..
