NBA Finals bet is connected to the Pats...

Don't know if you saw this or it was posted already. It IS a joke, in more ways than one. But I guess we can't count the mayor of LA as a "dink" as well.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sent the following letter today to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino making a friendly wager on the outcome of the Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals series:

Dear Mayor Menino:

Tonight is truly an historic night. It is hard to believe that it has
been twenty one - long - years since the last time the Lakers beat the
Celtics in the NBA Finals. Tonight we renew this great American
tradition. ... So to commemorate this historic event, I say we scrap the tired
tradition of wagering regional trinkets or cuisine - and go big. Let's really put it on the line: jobs, tradition, pride. So here's my proposal: If the Celtics win, we'll send you the best professional football team L.A. has to offer: the Arena League's Los Angeles Avengers. If the Lakers win, we get the Patriots. … Oh, and to sweeten the pot, in the event of a Lakers victory you can keep the Patriots' coach. We have a pretty good guy down the street who might be interested in the job - and who probably still has the gear.

real bet

--Related: Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and California Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger are making a friendly wager on the outcome of the NBA Finals. If the Celtics win, Schwarzenegger has promised to donate locally grown California food and wine to a charity of Patrick's choice. Should the Lakers prevail, Legal Sea Foods will donate 17 pounds of clam chowder to a charity chosen by Schwarzenegger.

Actually, if he really wanted to give them LA's best football team, it would have been USC and not the Avengers.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

Your a Pats nut, you should be laughing at it. Chill.

As I said before, if the guy would have used more detail with his barb, it would have been mildly funny. But when I heard it on Mike & Mike this morning, both said it was a shot a BB as I was thinking the same thing.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

Not trying to be a jerk (honestly) but curious how many times have you been to LA?

A few, I'm going to say 4. Mainly though my impression is fueled by the fact that my brother was nearly an innocent bystander and almost hit by crossfire in a gang-related drive-by when he lived there and had to have the Feds stakeout his apartment building for the next few months. That's LA.

Gangs in LA, they don't have those anywhere else. Seriously, for all the trash that most cities have, there is also beauty in those cities. I never thought Philly would be as nice as it was, or DC, or Boston, but I learned to find that among all the ugly crap, there is some damn great stuff in those cities. Still haven't found that in NYC. Just playing ... anyways, LA is always going to be tops in my book, actually more like Southern California, there are several parts of LA that we can do without.

Just curious, why were the feds involved in a shooting involving street gangs? Injunction, possible hate crime, witness protection, etc.

Some person living in his complex unknowingly and inadvertently offended a member of a gang while at a party. Their payback was to come and open fire on the whole place. I guess the feds got involved to ensure the protection of the target? Not entirely sure. Admittedly this was about 15 years ago, but its a lasting impression.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's plenty of redeeming qualities about LA, mainly sick weather, but I associate it with mostly negative things. I also think NYC is extremely overrated and pretty much sucks, and I have spent an awful lot of time there. But to each his own. A lot of people think Boston sucks, and I love it.

I think Boston is awesome, go there quite a bit. Mostly in the fall and winter, wonder why? Love the food, love the passion. Funny though, Philly has the same things: great food, great passion, but I cannot stand Philly fans. I guess if I were an Eagles fan I would.

Las Vegas and Washington DC are probably my second and third favorite big cities after LA, but I also love the Southwest, places like Phoenix, Tuscon and El Paso. The vibe in Miami and the cities nearby are incredible, and the chicks are some of the hottest you'll see. While I love partying in NY, I cannot stand it in the daytime. It's almost like they should be in a constant blackout to hide themselves.

If I had a traumatic experience like that, I'd probably feel the same way.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

I knew I'd see this today. It's like betting $5 and wanting $5,000,000,000 if you win.

This guy also doesn't know that the Patriots are not a Boston team. They are a New England team. And, the guy was totally classless by bringing up BB.

So, I guess you get what you have become. LA = classless.

Cut Ahhhnold some slack. He probably does not know anything about football and it was a clear joke based on the inequity of the bet.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

I figured his talking about "a guy down the street" he was referring to a homeless bum that already has the "gear" meaning a torn ratty sweatshirt.

I think he was referring to Pete Carrol, who may still have Patriots gear, ha ha.

I agree. Yes, it wasn't funny, but was clearly a joke. Lighten up, people.

Boy you're not kidding. New York women are some of the ugliest rats in the world I think. There are some hotties up there, but they are few and far between. And they talk with that nasily, annoying voice.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

how can you exclude BB from Pats package.?

Calm down. He's a politician and getting votes by saying (or implying) that Pete Carrol, a hero in his state is great is not an insult. Grow a fricken' skin.

About 13 times, give or take. In the '60s the Celtics routinely beat the Lakkers.

Best thing about Boston may be the sports. I love its history, its buildings, architecture, general walk-ability and aesthetic appeal, and I'm into video and photography and have worked in video in Boston, so I appreciate it from that aspect, but its sports culture may be the thing has kept me always living in MA and near Boston. I say near Boston b/c in my line of work I'll probably never be able to afford to live IN Boston as I did at school, LOL.

Truth is, given the troubles Boston has had with violence the past few years, that kind of thing can really happen anywhere...plus, I was pretty young when my bro was living out there, so I've always had that bias against it. NYC on the other hand I spent a lot of time there in my college years and I'm with you. Nighttime its fine, and in fact the convenience and opportunity of having everything open all the time is pretty sweet, but daytime and any time, the place is just generally really unappealing.

Downtown LA is the most soulless downtown I've ever seen. Some of the surrounding towns and areas are beautiful (like San Diego - awesome!), but LA itself? Sucks.

And I've been there many times, as well as dozens of other cities.
