Don't know if you saw this or it was posted already. It IS a joke, in more ways than one. But I guess we can't count the mayor of LA as a "dink" as well.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sent the following letter today to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino making a friendly wager on the outcome of the Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals series:

Dear Mayor Menino:

Tonight is truly an historic night. It is hard to believe that it has
been twenty one - long - years since the last time the Lakers beat the
Celtics in the NBA Finals. Tonight we renew this great American
tradition. ... So to commemorate this historic event, I say we scrap the tired
tradition of wagering regional trinkets or cuisine - and go big. Let's really put it on the line: jobs, tradition, pride. So here's my proposal: If the Celtics win, we'll send you the best professional football team L.A. has to offer: the Arena League's Los Angeles Avengers. If the Lakers win, we get the Patriots. … Oh, and to sweeten the pot, in the event of a Lakers victory you can keep the Patriots' coach. We have a pretty good guy down the street who might be interested in the job - and who probably still has the gear.

real bet

Schwarzenegger are making a friendly wager on the outcome of the NBA Finals. If the Celtics win, Schwarzenegger has promised to donate locally grown California food and wine to a charity of Patrick's choice. Should the Lakers prevail, Legal Sea Foods will donate 17 pounds of clam chowder to a charity chosen by Schwarzenegger.

I knew I'd see this today. It's like betting $5 and wanting $5,000,000,000 if you win.

This guy also doesn't know that the Patriots are not a Boston team. They are a New England team. And, the guy was totally classless by bringing up BB.

So, I guess you get what you have become. LA = classless.

granted, obviously it's a joke. BUT, the point is the mayor's a jack-ass for bringing BB into it.

I disagree. It was funny. Lighten up. He was poking fun of BB's style of dress, something most Pat fans do and the fact that his own city lacks a football team that they desperately want.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

These mayor/governor bets are always pretty lame. I like the SNL skit where Rudy Giuliani asks an opposing mayor to bet a cool million on the Yankees winning the World Series.

If he was, he did a very poor job. Now if he said "we have a coach who knows how to dress for the job and still has the gear". That would have been mildly funny.

You seem to read something in his statement that's not there. BTW, Mike & Mike took it as a shot a BB and not a fashion thing.

Where did you see this in the letter?

Some things are simply in poor taste, like if Boston Mayor/Governor had offered to be but threw in a Rodney King reference. Yeah, there are always people who will find something like that funny, but it is still in poor taste.

I figured his talking about "a guy down the street" he was referring to a homeless bum that already has the "gear" meaning a torn ratty sweatshirt.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

He didn't really say anything bad about BB if all he said is what was written above. I took it as if they would rather have their local guy, the poodle. I guess I can't blame them though, since petey is their equivalent of BB since they don't have a pro team.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

How about the Mayor writes back and says he doesn't want anything from LA b/c its a piece of shyt town with nothing of any value.

I think his "guy down the street" was in reference to Pete Carroll, coach of USC, former HC of the NEP.

the patriots are a boston team. dont let the name fool you. when the pats win the SB the parade goes thru boston not foxboro. when larry izzo has a charity event he has it in boston not foxboro. the pats were born in boston and reside 30 miles to the south. some patriots fans that dont live in the boston area may not like it but the pats are a boston team.

Re: NBA Finals bet is connected to the pats.....

The real bet should be if L.A. wins, they send all of South Central over to Boston, and if Boston wins, L.A. blows up the San Andreas fault ala Lex Luthor and sends L.A. into the Pacific.

Pete the Poodle couldn't be the Pats 3rd video assistant.

Ding ding ding! Winner! PC still "has the gear"...his old NEP coaching outfits.

Regards,
Chris

how can you exclude BB from Pats package.?

Pretty shocking the number of people who couldn't make this simple connection. Though some Pats fans seem to immediately see red the second someone outside of NE mentions BB in anything but a show of heaping praise.

Actually a pretty funny statement by Antonio V, but then again he is always at this best when he is hamming it up for the cameras. The man is the Herm Edwards of mayors.

Not trying to be a jerk (honestly) but curious how many times have you been to LA?

Your a Pats nut, you should be laughing at it. Chill.

My thoughts exactly. Anyone who has ever lived or visited often in LA would know.

Now NY on the other hand ...
