I'm sure Jets fans a chortling about their draft strategy to have an awful season last year so they were in position to pick Gholston before the Patriots, but IMO the Jets, with all their needs, misplayed this draft.

I think we all know that Ghoslton could be a monster - and he could also be a bust - at least compared to the salary slot he fills (cough *Dewayne Robertson * cough)

And then like last year, the Jets traded a quantity of draft picks for what they deemed quality - but in this case its a 2nd and 4th - potentially two very good players with very affordable salaries - for a 1st round TE. Adding a good TE is a good thing for the Jets who will rely on a dink and dunk offense whoever their QB is - but like last year they still have a lot of holes and were I the Jets GM, I would have held onto those picks. Frankly I'm not convinced he wouldn't have been there for them with their 2nd round pick 6 spots later.

The Dolphins I think did a good job with all their picks - Merling and Henne seem like they fill needs and represent good value - though I do question whether Long projects as a Left Tackle or Right Tackle in the NFL. If he's not cut out for LT then that's a heckuva lotof money to give to a RT. But it's not like the Fins had much of a choice about where they were picking - with no one interested in trading up either.

I think Buffalo did well - and affirmed that talk of the CBs going as early as #7 was erroneous... they went where they should have, falling back a few spots.

That being said McKelvin at 11 is OK - like the Pats, maybe he might have slid back a bit more as he's not exactly a tall CB - but that's where they were picking and if they like him, take him before someone else does.

I'm a bit intrigued by their selection of James Hardy - 36 Big Ten TDs - and 6' 5.5".

Whether he has speed, routes and good hands might be the icing on the cake - someone like him can be a big difference maker in the Red Zone. I never expect WRs to make an impact year 1 but if he's got some skills beyond his size, it looks like a very good pick.

So with the jury out for a long while to come I'm going to give the following Day 1 grades

Dolphins - B+ (did well with the cards dealt to them)
Jets - B - (took risks with Gholston and gave up a 4th rounder to move 6 spots up)
Buffalo B+ (got value with their #11 pick - the 1st CB taken in the draft - and a WR who is more than a half a foot taller than most of the CBs covering him can make a difference in a game.)

It makes you wonder if the Jets picked Gholston so that we couldn't. They clearly had a bigger need to get bigger, younger, healthier on their d-line and they did not do it. When oft injured jenkins goes down for a period a time, teams will run right up the gut on them. Hopefully they will be smart and shore up their d-line today or it will be a 3 years and done for Mangina.

"Hopefully they will be smart...today..."??? I for one hope they WON'T be smart. And I would be very pleased if it were "3 years and done" for Mantraitor.

The only thing w/ McKelvin is I think his return skills might be muted on the Bills, since they have excellent return guys as it is.

IMO jets have had a very good offseason. They have upgraded in all positions except QB. jenkins,faneca,gholston- traded robertson for next yr's 1st. Not too shabby.

They did not get a 1 next year for Robertston...I think best case scenario if he plays 65% of the snaps it's a 2 or 3. But I agree I think the Jets have moved into 2nd place in the division.

Ok, let me rephrase. Hopefully for their sake they will be smart. Of course I want them to pick busts every draft.
