With the talent available in this draft a 5th rounder could be quite valuable, especially in a trade up during the middle rounds.

The Patriots have drafted the following players during the Belichick era

in the 5th round: Marriott, Stachelski, Akbar, Koppen, Sam, Claridge,

O'Callaghan, and Oldenburg. Based on this I would conclude that it

would be a reach to think the 5th round pick can make the team. I think

the reason Seward was not given an offer was he was not considered

as valuable as the tender offer.

My guess is he meant "is greater than" aka more "valuable than" rather than "makes more money than"...

Given that the Patriots did not make Seward an offer, the Patriots brain trust apparently concluded that having a 5th round pick and only having to pay 5th round pick money was of more value to this team than having Seward at the contractual/financial/pick cost that it would have taken to get him.
