Re: WAAF: Pats will give Seward offer sheet

Adam Seward ran a 4.60 40 yard dash at the 2005 combine, and weighed in officially at 6'2, 248 lbs. This was faster than Demarcus Ware btw who ran a 4.65 40. Adam also scored a 33 on the wonderlic.

BB mentions Seward specifically, when asked about the draft. So he could be a guy the Pats looked at previously and liked.
"Q: When you look at that inside linebacker crop, is there a range of different strengths between them? It doesn’t seem like they are carbon copies of each other.

BB: Yeah. Absolutely. I think you have some bigger guys, some of the people you mentioned, like [Adam] Seward is a bigger, 250 [pound] type guy. People like that. And go through the Derrick Johnsons who are a little more athletic, could possibly play outside linebacker in a 4-3 system, down to players that would probably be considered undersized but are fast, have some coverage skill, are much better athletes than the bigger group and they all can play the same position, depending on what defense you want to put them in. So, I think that there is definitely a range and that’s why I am saying, if you are looking for a player that can run 4.5 and that’s what the criteria is based on your coverage scheme and defensive coverage responsibilities, then it’s going to be hard to find a guy that’s 260 pounds and does that. You are going to be looking for a different type of player than a player who is a run-stopping guy that can play inside, that can take on guards, that can down after down handle big people, you are looking at different players."

Re: WAAF Reporting

I bet the Panthers match.
It would be too embarassing for them if Seward were to go to the Patriots for a fifth and he worked out as a starting linebacker.

Any other team than the Patriots, I think they would not match

I bet they don't. If they wanted him, they'd have re-signed him by now, especially with Dan Morgan leaving town. From Carolina's perpective, he's an injury-prone LB who doesn't really fit well in their defense. Getting a fifth-round pick for a guy that cost you a fifth-round pick five years ago is a damn good return.

The Patriots must have scouted him heavily in college. The other ILB on that team was Ryan Claridge, whom they drafted the same year.

Still quiet on Seward, right?

Re: WAAF: Pats will give Seward offer sheet

They could be trying to work out a trade like they did for Welker, instead of just offering a deal. Or their trying to structure a deal that won't be matched.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Reiss's take from his mailbag today:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extras/askreiss/03_11_08/?page=2

When I saw that the Pats were bringing in Carolina linebacker Adam Seward, a restricted free agent, for a visit, I was pretty happy. I know he's been a back-up but he's got 3-4 experience and his 40 time was a 4.6 at the combine so we'd finally be getting some speed and youth at inside linebacker. Any word on whether the Pats will make him an offer?
Desmond

A: Unless something came up in Seward's physical, I would assume an offer is forthcoming, Desmond. At first, I wondered if the Patriots might try to swing a trade for Seward - similar to last year with Wes Welker - but I don't think the Panthers are thinking along those lines. So if the Patriots want to acquire Seward, it looks like right now they'll have to go through the traditional offer-sheet route. Then the question becomes, what is a good enough offer that the Panthers won't match? As of last Thursday, Carolina has $8.3 million in salary cap space according to a recent Yahoo! Sports report, so if the Patriots are creative, it shouldn't be much of a problem to craft an offer sheet that makes it tough for the Panthers to match.

True, but then again I dont want to overpay the man either Mike...

looks like the pats kicked the tires and decided to pass if they wanted him a deal would of been offered

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

they could have just put a poison pill in there, in essense not allowing the panthers to match the offer

maybe now that spikes was released they are looking at him instead?

They still have about a month to make an offer if they want to.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

The F.O. should call up MLB Al Wilson, I'd like to make a thread about him, but I can't: too little posts.

He has met with the Lions (last month) and Browns (just this week), and he has been cleared for all physical activity. His doctor says he is at no increased risk at all at this point. His last season active he had over 100 tackles, and was great at getting to the ball. He is still only 29 despite missing all of last year after being cut by the Broncos when he failed a physical.

He hasn't played in the 3-4 at all to my knowledge, but he is a ball hawk, and with our defensive line I imagine he would have some nice room to roam and make plays. I wouldn't pay him big, but if he wanted to get on the field and win, it could be a win-win.

29, injured all last year and never played 3-4.

And above all else, he failed a physical with the Donkeys- Do you know how beat up you have to be to fail a physical there? Do you think its coincidence that Richard Steadman works there? (wikipedia it)

That's not necessarily the case, they had Booker in for a visit a month prior to offering him a deal. They are probably negotiating a deal.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

The Pats have until April 18th to sign Seward to as offer sheet.

They may wait until the Panthers spend more money and come

closer to their salary cap.

BINGO! We have a winner.
That how you make it hard for them to match (and Pats then don't have to overpay for him with an outrageous contract). Wait til they have spent most of their cap.

I am glad someone was paying attention in class.

I emailed Mike Reiss on this and here is his response:
the sense i get is that there is no need to rush. i think they'd like him, but as it appears on the surface it's not an overly aggressive pursuit at this point.

So why not wait until the Panthers have less money...We have a few winners...Jimke..Sunny Denmark..NO rush...and in the meantime..look for other solutions..

What's to prevent another team from offering Seward a contract in the interim??

What's to prevent the Panthers from freeing up cap space???

Like releasing a Hartwig??
