Guys, I know this does not require a new thread, but I think we should appreciate what Eugene and Asante meant to our franchise.

Both were drafted in 2003 (2nd and 4th rounds, respectively) and came on to perform well for our team. The emergence of Eugene as a safety allowed us to compete for the Super Bowl after Lawyer Milloy was released. I am sure the coaches saw enough from him in camp to guess that Rodney Harrison to SS and Eugene moving from CB to FS would work...and Lawyer was let go.

Asante developed into a near-top flight corner - allowing us to release Ty Law when his cap number blew up. Granted Asante is now going to 'get paid to this'...but we should respect that and be happy that we watched him develop from a borderline Day 1 draftee to a Pro Bowler.

So, good luck, Gentleman. Don't let the door hit you in the backside but also know we appreciated your time here.

I'm torn. Hard for me to be a well-wisher to Wilson for underperforming and Asante for entering football purgatory -- wherever he lands -- to chase the dollars. I'd feel different if they at least had stuck around for more than one tour with the Patriots.

I know what you are saying...I wish for the same.
However, we got as much as we could out of those guys. Best to just let them go with bridges intact. I can't fault Asante for chasing the money and Eugene for looking for a starting job.

Dear Eugene,
Thank you for for getting injured every year since your rookie season. I also want to thank for your never getting any better, but actually getting worse. Thanks for the memories.

Dear Asante,
Thank you for doing your part by dropping the game clinching interception yet still think your the best cornerback in the NFL. I'm so glad your going to cripple another teams cap because they are so stupid to give you 100 million dollars and 30 million in guarentees that your are asking for. I hope you invest your money wisely because your best years were in New Enlgand.

....Okie dokie. So much for intentions when I started this thread...

Eugene can kiss my ass, waste of space the alst four years. I don't get the antimosity toward Samuel though. He performed, did what he had to do and now he just wants the money. It isn't like he lies like everyone else does.

I have nothing but fond feelings for Asante.

Look, if he signs a contract that's within 10 percent or so of what the Patriots would have paid him, I'll be disappointed that he did not stick around over a (relatively!) modest amount of money. But if a decent team that he thinks he can help make a contender is going to throw crazy money at him, he's done plenty for our team to earn it.

Our team has shown that it will not let sentimentality creep into the equation when making personnel decisions. Bashing Asante for being the same does not seem appropriate to me.

Good luck to them both. Asanta deserves his payday, and Wilson deserves the chance to get his career back on track.

I'm not convinced Asante is gone, but if he does go I've zero doubt he'll continue to make a few people here look daft.

So long to both of them, especially Asante.
