This is a reasonable contract given the nature of the market in which it developed. The numbers are within the salary creep range agents have managed to establish as routine. A rising cap should cover it. I have said from the start that the team should make a quite firm offer of $32M/yr (I know, this is but one measure, but how long a post do I want to type?), making $34M ballparkish OK in my mind.

The "Krafts are cheap" stuff is despicable horseshit, of course - it has been all along - horseshit which might smack a little of bigotry; but some are apparently so envious of others' success that they must deal with it in unworthy and childish ways. The Krafts have earned their money by providing goods and services others have valued sufficiently to pay for them. Apparently their success bruises the tender egos of others unable to match their accomplishments.

I'm always terrified of injury the year a contested FA signs a massive deal. Look at our record on that...
Bledsoe - burst lungs, T. Glenn - mental case, Colvin - hip, Adailus Thomas - arm, Dion Lewis - knee, Gilmore - quads, Jonnu Smith - nagging, Barmore - blood clots.

It would be catastrophic if Gonzo gets hurt this year. Both on the field and in the cap.

No catastrophic would be the QB getting hurt that instantly switches the Pats from a top 10 team in the league to bottom 10 in 5 seconds, Gonzalez getting hurt would be very bad and would probably end any Super Bowl contention but could still win a bunch of games.

Hopefully that streak will be obliterated.

This should be tattooed on the forehead of everyone claiming the Pats should have resigned Gonzo early, to remind them that the team tried, and it was the player that dragged it out to milk everything he could from the deal.

You're assuming that the aggressor meant simply doing better than Stingley's deal.

We don't know what aggressive meant in the Spring.

Let's say the Patriots came in and offered him $32m and $110 guaranteed off the bat. Gonzalez would've been crazy not to take it since it was significantly higher than Stingley's deal.

Now that's aggressive.

In the end, I suppose I'm talking about a difference of $1.75m per year, so it's not a huge deal. But it is a little saved money off the cap.

The Krafts are in a dying business (Int'l Paper) and have made the bulk of their fortunes off the Patriots.

They spend less than most other teams.

I havent seen this confirmed anywhere tbh. 5th year option could be voided and his contract starts after this season.

Bizarre posts all over the place in this thread. The people saying we needed to sign Gonzo or DOOM are now Chicken Littles.

Bizarre because, well, we signed Gonzalez!! So the people that were saying this are actually now saying, Phew, and GOOD!

And before you chime in with, "I knew it was going to happen all along!", many of us were responding to posters saying Gonzalez was greedy and was blowing apart the team's cap structure. So there were few if any people here saying it was going to get done before the first game.

So save it!

That's the way it SHOULD be but I doubt that's the way it is.

The biggest problem with a huge up-front bonus is that while it gets amortized evenly over the life of the contract, the player has a short memory when it's year 4 and the salary seems low cause it was mostly prepaid in year 1. It should be a league rule that bonuses are paid in sync with the amortization: guaranteed but paid at the start of each season covered, so that it's clear the bonus is prepaid salary.

It should work this way even if the player is cut or traded before the term is finished - he could be on another team or retired but still collecting his remaining bonus from his prior team at the start of each year. And why accelerate the remaining amortization as cap hit in that case? just leave it alone until it runs its course.
