The Initial 53 Man Roster

credit to the team for trying to address a depth deficiency.
some on this forum called out the shortfall over the summer. I understand combing the waiver wire for a potential growth player, but the team still appears woefully short at LB and edge, unless they play the yo-yo roster game with Britt to start the season.
I get that some of these moves were more ST decisions, but at some point, especially if Landry is never 100%, both ILB and edge will need additional moves

This is a real life example of what I mean by the new rules have changed roster management.

Britt would not have even been eligible for the practice squad before covid.

In pre covid the practice squad was young players trying to find their way into the league. Now it's a place to stash veterans like Britt as well.

We know the players association is weak, but why do they allow a rule that encourages vested veterans to be cut for rookies?

I suppose it can be said that we are "stashing" Britt. The reality is that no one in the NFL wants him. They can sign him to their 53 at any time.

Practice Squad player are players that we are willing to lose; full stop.

If we are to use the roster to augment the team each week with elevations, then we need 2 PS players at that position. WR, RB LB and DT are all examples, and we always have a couple of STers (often DB's like Brown and Vildor.. I also think that TE will soon be in that situation as well.

The only concern I have is at center. We really don't want another team to poach Rizy.

it takes 2 to play this out.
the player does have the option of leaving for another team, but clearly Britt (and Brown) had agreements with Vrabel that they would stay. perhaps the team also included a bonus to play this out.
I see it as a win for both the team and player.
where is the downside?

Britt is on the PS making PS money. It wasn't an advantage to him to be cut/waived.

Brown is a different situation. He is an important part of our 53.

Britt's money if he is on the 53 man roster this season=$1.4m
Britt's money if he is on the PS all season=$1m
the team may have given him a bonus to do this
if Britt reverts to the 53 man roster, his salary will increase as well.

a secret under the table bonus?

Yeah bonuses are not allowed.

Every team has a Britt or two of their own. Yes the player can leave for another team, but these are marginal NFL players whose main advantage is that they provide a need for the next game. Now with elevations the incentive is to keep a young player with more upside like Obiazor, and just find another JAG to fill that role if need be.

Why would that be OK with the NFL PA?

the percentage of revenue doesn't change.

HOW BAD WAS OUR DEPTH AT LB AND EDGE

1) We upgraded the roster with Muasau and Hunter, and still
2) have Obiazor and Hutchins on the 53 as 8th and 9th LB/EDGE players.
3) We aren't even carrying a 10th, even though both Obi and Hutchins are ulikeley to get reps on Defense.

I have no problems with having Obiazor and Hutchins (and Canada) on the roster. As we knew when they were drafted, they are here to be STers. Of course, any of them could be cut at any time, as well as our #3 and #4 TE's. That does continue to give Vrabel flexibility. After all, I am old enough to think that we need a punter on the 53.

not secret and not under the table
but as he is elevated onto the roster, his new money is $1.2m, plus his gtd money at signing of $683k=$1.8m
his salary prior was $1.4m
if he is on the 53 man roster all season, he makes more money
thats the incentive to help out the team at this time of year (rather than being released)

I would agree we upgraded our ST depth
I would argue we did not upgrade our LB and Edge depth

To be clear, you don't think that Mausau is an upgrade over Obiazor, Britt and Muma?
And that Hunter isn't an upgrade over Holmes/Laketa?

I didn't say that this is still not a weakness. It is. However, I think that both players are improvements.

They’ve done this every season after cutdowns day for decades. There’s nothing unique about this, and many of these guys will be here for about the length of a cup of coffee.

You called out shortfalls at positions that frankly they haven’t touched at all. ILB was only added once Jacobs was slid to the PS, OLB has remained the same.

At this time each year teams take the opportunity try out a bunch of prospects unknown to them, and update their players rolls for later on in case of emergency.

Not sure what you mean.
The players get the same money as before and more because of the expanded Practice Squads. I don't know why the union should object to the current negotiated rules.

Both of these guys could be gone in a week.

perhaps I was not clear, sorry about that
I do believe he is an upgrade over all 3.
I do not think the players brought in are an upgrade over who was here last year.
