Let’s talk Jacas. Is it physical, mental, both?

Blaming everyone else rather than working on getting better was a big part of the problem.
He was by far the most entitled player I’ve ever seen on the Pats.

It’s no secret how bad he’s looked in action so far. Constantly whiffing, getting stood up by backups. Not a great showing this August for the guy.

We all know Jacas missed a large portion of camp and is “behind”. Plus there was the matter of his injury condition. But even with that, you’d think the raw talent would’ve fared much better against 3rd stringers.

Are people seeing anything technique wise with him, or does it just look like he’s physically inferior?

I’m pretty surprised at what I’ve seen so far from him. I expected much better as he was coming out.
He looks too thin and light to me.

Pass rush wise that can be a blessing, but as a run stopper holding edge not so much. I noticed this in the Eagles game. One pass play snap he had great pressure on the RT and QB and the very next play was a run directly at him where the RT blew him up like mannequin and the RB ran through the B gap for a sizeable gain.

More experience and better technique may help. BB constantly drilled home about having the right leverage, so perhaps its a matter of just needing more time.

Haven’t even played in a game yet

Why should he get to play a real game, he sucks that's obvious. It reminds me of when they wasted a valuable 6th round pick on Tom Brady. The guy couldn't even keep his job in college, then he did absolutely nothing his rookie season but Belichick still got rid of their #1 overall pick and $100 million man just to save the Kraft's money: They might have won a Super Bowl if they had only stuck with Bledsoe, a proven winner, but noooooooooo, they had to go with the guy who had done absolutely NOTHING, not even in his pre season games. They just never learn, they should have signed Maxx Crosby and that guy from Cincy, Trey Anastasio, but instead they want to draft guys and " develop" them, what a waste. That Maye guy sucks too. In fact everyone sucks, even Ian, he sucks too. You hear that Ian, you suck too, or is it you suck as well? I don't know, you know why, because I suck too, or as well, whatever it is?

Its tough to gauge against the Eagles though. Their average lineman is 8 feet tall and 700 lbs. I will give him a pass on those ones. He does not get a pass for the Browns though.

Thank you for your post, Mr. Dunning-Kruger. Your train is never late.

I think it is a bit of both.
the game is still moving a little too fast for him. he seems to be thinking rather than reacting.
he also appears to have 1 rush move...the bull rush. he is going to need some coaching on technique on some other options.
by all accounts, he is very strong, an extremely hard worker and very coachable.
not worried about him (yet)

*ROFLMAO* JACAS has NUMEROUS moves. You clearly have no idea about the different moves from an edge rusher.

Jacas is a student off the game. What YOU don't understand is that they are RUNNING VANILLA out there. Expecting to see every pass rush move he has in his arsenal is ridiculous and shows that your expectations are the issue. Not Jacas.

The guy was regularly praised for his ability to set up OTs by using various moves. NOT just bull-rushing. Guy used 40% power, 40% speed and 20% inside moves. When your that balanced, it speaks volumes as to how your not a one trick pony.

At minimum, Jacas is going to be no help off the edge until late in the season, best case scenario.

You don't know this. Jacas was late to the party and is playing catchup with the pro game. He's smart, physical, loves football and has a high motor. It could just be a matter of getting in the reps. Hopefully he's in the rotation and things start clicking for him, we'll see.

I don’t think it’s crazy to say that it’s unlikely he’ll be contributing much early this season.

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong there and he figures it out quicker. My point is just that it’s likely it’ll take time based on his late start.

That is entirely possible. But the Pats are so thin at the position it just might be trial by fire for the kid. The mistakes he's shown thus far have been mental. Like I suggested, it could be all he needs are reps. Jacas supposedly is smart and coachable, I'd be surprised to see him continuing to over-pursue/chase fakes.

I can't see playing a player if he isn't ready. If he is our #5 EDGE player at the moment, then his eps should show that.

It is Swinson that will have trial by fire. We have Jones and Ponder. Another will make the 53 plus we can be elevated someone from the PS.

I don't see the need to play a rookie until he is ready.

The OPEN question is wher my comments will appply to Lomu.

Another open question: if a rookie is on the 53, what MAKES him "ready"? This was a big point of debate two years ago re. Maye. If Jacas is active he likely will be in the edge rotation, at least minimally and situationally.

Lomu is different matter since he'd have the heavy responsibility of protecting The Franchise. In his case there's the benefit of having last year's starters returning ahead of him. Even then, he got preseason reps at both tackle spots and a bit at guard, so they're grooming the kid for relief duty if/when the need arises.

If that was your point, whether he would contribute early or not then it's a valid question, howeve that wasn't the premise of your post. You weren't saying that he wouldn't contribute early this season, you were questioning his athletic ability, and whether he is " physically inferior."

It is not at all clear if Lomu is more ready than Bryant or even Conley.

Jacas looked lost like beck wethers on the slopes of everest out there.

Physical traits are readily measurable and, barring injury or the inevitable ravages of time, can be relied upon to endure over time. Those who make draft choices tend therefore to rely upon them, probably to a fault. Intelligence and character are less readily measurable and more subject to change, particularly for guys just out of adolescence, but they are at least equally important. When Bill was good in the draft he was very, very good; and when he was bad, he was very, very bad. When he was good, he was very, very good, in large measure because he knew the value of intelligence and character ("Does he 'love football," and so on.).

To this point, there is reason for concern with respect to Jacas regarding both intelligence and character. First there was all that whatever-it-was around draft time, which might (might) indicate an issue re character. Now, he looks a little dumb out there on the field. This gives legitimate cause for concern, but it is early, and none of us, I suspect, would care to have had a final evaluation of our merits be made on the basis of the nonsense rattling around in our brain when we were 22, or whatever age he is.

Safe to say - i think we all want him to succeed, mentally and physically as a player
