Forget the roster locks. They added three RB's (subtracted one) on top of what there was already there.

If they were happy with the young RBs even in a long preseason game, there are more than enough carries for 4 backs (even if there's an injury).

On top Jennings moved into the third spot instantly after being out. If one of the rookies was really impressing, I doubt this would have happened a couple of weeks into camp.

First separate the backs into two groups. Big power back and small receiving back, think Blount and White.

Haskins provides some depth for preseason at the big spot and Hasty at the small spot. Neither of these moves is preventing them from getting the young back preseason snaps, it’s preventing them from getting too much.

Some of them are often longer, at least in terms of the number of plays run. Minnesota's game last year had 70 plays, which, when logging these for the stats DB, is definitely a bit too many for a preseason game.

Kind of a last minute solution if that's the case.

There’s three preseason games. RB’s take the most beating, get the most work.

I guess the bigger question is what position is suffering because they have this many RB’s? Who are they supposed to sign?

That's a question with zero meaning. No position suffers when you sign a bottom of the roster player on a 90 man roster.

At this stage teams tend to sign developmental players to get a look at someone new.

Bringing in two retreads with history in the system happens when you aren't happy with what you got.

I think they got spooked last year when they didn't have a lot of RB and kick returner depth after injuries

I think they like Jennings too but he could be on the bubble for cuts, and while they should be able to get him back on PS if that happens, given that he has all of 10 games played, he could also be poached if this happens and this gives them some added backup depth security

Both Haskins and Hasty have played under Vrabel before so he at least is familiar with them.

Since he's signed, maybe he'll play tonight because I'm sure they don't want to risk injury of starters (I think they need to release someone first though)

With any of these guys, while they could be a Week 1 replacement for a veteran who the team wants to avoid guaranteeing a contract, unless that happens their veteran minimum contract will be based on games played, so while there is a small cap hit with these moves in reality it doesn't cost them much to have them on PS

Probably to see right away how well he was able to come back.

Vrabel and Josh do seem to give seniority first crack at a lot of things.

They also seem committed to churning the back end of the roster a lot. They’ve brought in enough players to get lots of competition and see who does well. Look at how many backup DBs we’ve been playing. And not just back of the roster, for example WRs. This may be the same, fill the room with a crowd and see who steps up. Skim the cream, flush the dregs, wash, rinse, repeat.

If your young players look good two weeks into camp, you don't immediately put a JAG vet in front of them who barely held a roster spot the year before. Nor do you add 2 jag vets along with it.

No I think you've ID'd at least one aspect of this.

Henderson was actually viewed as a decent blocker in college but I also recall times when we were down at RB, and he (somewhat wisely) backed down from blocking a HUGE defender who was set to pancake him.

I'm somewhat hard pressed to blame him as a 5'9 200 lb RB - but the bottom line is he has struggled in pass protection as he simply doesn't have the size and weight to block effectively. His value to us is in his ability to be a change-of-pace quick back in non-passing situations - but it's also why I don't view him as a 3 down RB

I still think he'll make the team, but if there are injuries and we need an RB to play pass protection, he's not the guy

How do you know that Jennings moved into the 3rd spot? Because of an UNOFFICIAL depth chart that still had players on it that weren't on the roster anymore?
