Why not 7 WR's on the opening day roster?

7 WRs is as possible as it has been in the past. Despite many saying we'll carry 6 RBs, I just don't see that happening.

We all know much depends on Boutte being traded or not but assuming he's here (and there's no camp injuries) we're looking at the following 7 potentially on the roster"

1. Brown - 78 catches last year
2. Doubs - 55 catches last year
3. Boutte (yes, he's our 3rd best WR) - 33 catches last year
4. Hollins - 46 catches last year
5. Douglas - 31 catches last year
6. Williams - 10 catches last year

Plus one more IF they feel they can't sneak the rest on PS, knowing that we only have so many signed for next year.

People also seem to forget that that's not the limit of our receiving options with Henry accounting for 60 catches and Stevenson and Henderson together 67 catches.

Any others, including Chism, who had 3 catches last year, I expect can safely be put on the PS or get a case of the Foxboro flu to redshirt until next year when contracts are expiring.

I don't get the talk of cutting Mack Hollins at all - that's subtraction by subtraction in the locker room and leadership departments, and 46 catches is nothing to sneeze at, especially if he can be called upon to backup at a thin TE position.
46 catches from a starting WR is not good.
I’ll say again if Mack Hollins is such a great leader and locker room guy why did none of his former teams value that and bring him back. He’s strange and quirky. That isn’t a benefit to a football team.
He’s been on 5 teams in 5 years.

Plus Wallace was not inactive all year.
So he was listed active once...I think anybody with a pulse was Active on that day...it's not unique.

4 times actually
Stop it!

Folks seem to need to prove that Boutte is better than Hollins. for me, I don't think this is relevant to the Opening Day roster.

If Boutte isn't traded, he will clearly be on the starting roster with Brown. Doubs, Hollins and Williams.

And, sure they could be a 6th, or not.

Has the situation changed in months? Isn't it still Boutte or Douglas, with Chism possibly getting the #6 position (or competing for a PS spot?

Keeping a guy because he might not make it to the practice squad is silly fan talk, not the decision teams actually make. If he isn’t good enough to make your roster legitimately you don’t keep him.

It may not be as common as we think, but we've seen it happen; Belichick literally made a trade to avoid exposing Gunner Olszewski to waivers a few years ago, after he had gotten the call that they were going to release him.

Not sure that applies, because Gunner made the team and was the primary return man week 1.

Mack Hollins is playing for his job. Minimal dead cap hit.

I don't think that cap hit will be a consideration in choosing our top 5 WR's.

Hollins, Boutte, Douglas and Chism all have minimal cap hit if they are waived or traded.

Josh isn't trying to have the lowest cap hits for WR's to add to locks Brown, Doubs and Williams.

Someone is going to be cut. He's going to be 33, so he would have to significantly outperform the younger players.

nonsense!

Hollins, Boutte and Douglas are all free agents after the season. The best of the bunch should be chosen as the addition to the other four. Their age matters little if at all.

The six veterans could be kept if we wanted six. The idea that we might keep Chism because he is younger than Hollins make no sense to me. Let him compete with the youngsters for the 6th spot or for the PS.

I get that that adjusting to rule changes as the years pile up is a lot for you.
Nice try. With your argument I’d go that way too

What rule changed that makes you want to keep players who can’t help you over players who can?
What happens when you put your backup on the PS and another team signs him away?
You want to expose guys you need to keep guys you don’t because they let you activate them 3 times.

You make a good case for cutting Douglas, Williams and Chism since they didn't come close to what Hollins did.

Maybe we trade Doubs too since he only had 9 more catches than Mack, and we know how bad 46 catches is for a starting WR.
