The alternative to extending a play is to give up on a play. The alternative to needing to extend a play is to have better blocking.

Maye threw 57.4% of his passes 9 yards or less and completed 86% of them.
Are we unhappy with that? They averaged 7 years per attempt.
He threw 23.8% of them 10-19 yards downfield. He completed 66.7% of them and averaged 11.7 years per attempt.
He attempted 12.8% of his passes 20+ yards downfield, composed 54.8% for 16.9 yards per attempt.
What in those numbers is less than phenomenal?

He was sacked 47 times for 205 lost yards, but escaped sacks and scrambled 61 times for 422 yards gained.

There are also many cases of him escaping the rush and making big plays, a decent amount of the 10-19 and 20 + throws were off platform.

Maye isn’t a pocket QB?

He’s a pocket QB, he just needs to become better at being a pocket QB.

Being able to scramble and make off script throws is a nice trait to have, but it’s not a sustainable gameplan for winning in the playoffs.

As someone who attended early camp practices his rookie year, he has come a long long way since then. Coming from college where he never took a snap under center, to those early practices where he struggled to get the play in and set the offense before the play clock ran out… he has made vast improvements.

Last year what he did looked really impressive, but it was largely an athletic feat of achievement utilizing a middle school level of offensive knowledge. He needs to get through high school quickly and finish his college degree. He needs to master the offense and take full command.

I’m not surprised that people are struggling with this. We’ve had younger people arguing for years the sole reason the early dynasty happened is because Tom arrived on the scene and set the NFL on fire… when that’s not what happened at all. The won a ring while he was still transitioning from crawling to walking. He wasn’t running until 2003… year four.

It’s not insulting to say Drake Maye has to improve…. QB fanboys just interpret it that way.

That's silly. Luck played like an iron man while his GM put the weakest offensive lines in the NFL in front of him.

Luck's Condensed Injury History:

A torn right labrum (and multiple sprained AC joints) in his throwing arm that required surgery and caused him to miss the entire 2017 season.

A lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscles sustained in November 2015, which caused him to miss the remainder of that season.

Other Physical Injuries: Multiple concussions, torn cartilage in two ribs, and a calf/ankle injury in 2019.

Retired at 30 with 100 million in the bank, now working for Stanford football... he's doing all right.

I also wasn't talking about them as comparable careers, I was talking about comparable athletes. Both big, both also had sneaky speed and athleticism.

He's not going to come back. The Pats already gave him a price they were willing to pay and he rejected it which was why he got released. They moved on signing Doubs. There's video of him ranting about he's the best #2 WR in the league. When he comes to terms he's a slot WR and accepts that value is when another team will sign him.

I thought DIggs coming off injury last season was great.
If Brown was already on the team early in the offseason, I would not have had an issue giving Diggs the deal Doubs got.
in 2026, Brown/Diggs might have been better than Brown/Doubs.
but the timing of Brown, made it a moot point.

I can see Diggs signing with another team later in the summer, especially if there is an injury.
he can still be a productive WR and a teams #1 if needed.

Yes they can. Wes Welker is one type of slot. There are many ways to use WRs with different skillsets out of the slot.

today the slot is usually covered by a CB
regardless, get Brown into situations where he is one on one with a defender
he will win 9 times out of 10 throws
