NFL News Vikings to move LB Jonathan Greenard - Should Patriots be interested? [traded to Eagles 4/24]

Prior to the draft, trades continual signins.. if he were on this roster right now.. he and Jones would be the starters at edge. Tells you exactly where the position has been the past few seasons apart from judon and the flash in the pan uche...
In no order, I think OT, Edge and WR will be the first 3 picks of the draft.

How do you figure that a guy who misses 25-27% of his tackles is an upgrade?? Not to mention he's looking for a contract in the $19M range....

Help me understand your thought process on this..

He wouldn't be 'looking' for that $19M, in a trade he'd come with it this year and next. Other than that, point well taken. $19M for a player that comes with question marks....

I can see that. Seen as how they took an OT first last season I see this position being targeted in the first 3 rounds.

I think his contract is already 19 million and he wants more. I would pass. There are some good off the ball linebackers available in this draft.
Greenard would be an EDGE for the Patriots. Not an "Off the ball" guy.

Lower missed tackle rate than Chaisson and as effective at getting to the QB. Upgrade in my book, but the cost is significant so a hard pass from me. Especially if the can get Jacas who plays in a very similar style to Greenard

How is 3 sacks "as effective at getting to the QB" as Chaisson's 7.5? Chaisson was a starter. Greenard would be coming off the bench as he's not an upgrade over Landry or Jones.

From Pro-Football-Reference.

Chaisson had 7.5 sacks and 18 QB hits on 400 Pass Rushing snaps. 1 sack or QB hit every 15.7 snaps. 12 missed tackles

Greenard had 3 sacks and 11 12 QB hits on 270 Pass rushing Snaps. 1 sack or QB hit every 19.3 18 snaps. 11 missed tackles

Dre'mont Jones had 7 sacks and 24 QB Hits on 507 Pass Rushing Snaps. 1 sack or QB hit every 16.35 snaps. 3 Missed tackles

To me, what Jones did last year is more impressive since he did it while playing on 2 different teams. Jones is the upgrade. Greenard is not.

EDIT: Updated Greenard's Sack/QB Hit number after correcting Typo

I agree that Jones is an upgrade as well.

This is fun so lets look at 2024 or 2023 for Greenard 12 and 12.5 sacks and 22 QB hits in both seasons as well as less than 10 missed tackles both years. I don't know where to find pass rush snap counts for those years, but he seems pretty effective. Again I do not want them to trade for him but to suggest that he is not an upgrade is pretty ridiculous.

With Missed tackles, Pro-Football-Reference (PFR) seems to go light on them. PFF seems to go heavy.

PFF has the snap counts broken up by run defense, pass defense and coverage.

2023 - 219 Run Defense, 408 pass rush, 8 coverage 12 missed tackles (PFF) / 5 (PFR)
2024 - 296 Run Defense, 532 pass rush, 88 coverage, 17 missed tackles. (PFF) / 9 (PFR)
2025 - 224 Run Defense, 270 pass rush, 65 coverage , 11 missed tackles. (PFF) / 7 (PFR)

I lean towards PFFs missed tackle numbers because I've watched guys like Chaisson miss a lot more than 4 tackles last season the way that PFR claims.

Greenard's Pressure numbers per PFR:
2023 - 9 QB Hurries, 22 QB Hits, 12.5 sacks = 43.5 Pressures
2024 - 18 QB Hurries, 22 QB Hits, 12 Sacks = 52 Pressures
2025 - 12 QB Hurries, 12 QB Hits, 3 Sacks = 27 pressures

Greenard's Pressure numbers per PFF: (Note - PFF's sack numbers are almost always wrong because they don't track half sacks. They round UP on a per game basis)

2023 - 24 QB Hurries, 10 QB Hits, 14 sacks = 48 pressures
2024 - 59 QB Hurries, 10 QB Hits, 11 sacks = 80 pressures
2025 - 35 QB Hurries, 8 QB Hits, 4 sacks = 47 pressures

You may think it's ridiculous that I don't consider Greenard to be an upgrade because it's clear that his play dropped off significantly from 2024 to 2025.

In 2024, Greenard averaged- 17.4 Run Defense Snaps, 31.3 Pass defense snaps, 5.2 Coverage snaps
in 2025, Greenard averaged - 18.6 run defense Snaps, 22.5 Pass defense snaps, 5.4 coverage Snaps.

So, something happened that he saw an 8.8 Pass defense per game reduction (28.1%) . Greenard suffered a Shoulder injury in week 10, that cost him week 11 and 12, then he was IRed after week 15 because he made the injury worse and missed weeks 16-18. Through the first 8 weeks, he averaged over 54 snaps a game.. Week 9, before his injury, his snap count dropped to 36. Weeks 13 and 14, saw him average only 22 total snaps. He doubled that to 44 snaps in week 15 before re-injuring the shoulder and it requiring surgery.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all to believe that it was more than just his injury and losing 5 games that resulted in the significant drop in his numbers. I think it's also safe to question when Greenard will be ready from his surgery and whether he'll be the same player.

Here are Greenards 2024 and 2025 Snap counts by game according to PFF:

2024:

2025:

He dropped from 31.3 Pass rush snaps per game in 2024 to 25.6 per game for the first 8 games of 2025. That's an 18.2% reduction even before his injury.

Very recent news. Vikings expected to move talented linebacker Jonathan Greenard just before the draft in a cap firesale.

The 28 year old 6'3 259 lb Edge player has posted 12.5, 12, and 3 sacks over the past 3 seasons.

If he returns to form the Patriots could pick up a double digit pass rusher. How much would he cost and should we be interested in signing him?
