Patriots Player Departure Jahlani Tavai Released

Per Bert Breer. Heard on 98.5.

Saves $1.7 in cap space, now around $63M. Money freed up for a purpose, hopefully.

I'm a little surprised, like the Gibson move, not with the ultimate result but the timing. We only save $1.7M of cap space but about $1.1M of that gets eaten up by the replacement player. At that number, seemed like a bring to camp type of guy at least. Not to be doom and gloom but imagine we have one LB tear an ACL and another sprains a knee right before the season. But this could just be doing right by a vet that they don't expect to keep and letting him go find a job elsewhere rather than being injury insurance here.

I wonder if this move allows them to draft a pass rusher like Cashius Howell, R Mason Thomas or Romello Height. They don't have the size to be a 3 down edge, but can be deployed as situational pass rushers.

I really liked how the team gathered around him last season, but it was obvious our defense was moving away from his type of player. I hope he finds a good landing spot.

"Younger, Cheaper, Better"
They do really seem to be doing that, even if it may be to their detriment in the short term. Year 1 established the culture, year 2 will really solidify the foundation of the roster. Maybe they have less success but they have a stronger younger core to build on in year 3.

Which also argues against signing AJ Brown. I guess you're one of those self-loathing, miscreant pessimists?

TECHNICALLY speaking, AJ Brown is younger and better than Diggs.... just not cheaper.

Yeah, glad they’re sticking with that and not trying to chase the short term success like the Commanders did. It’ll be tough not to have less success on the field this year than last, unless we truly think this team is Super Bowl ready again. A lot of things went right for the team (and wrong for other teams) last year. I expect this to be our 2002 to last year’s 2001, complete with the much more difficult schedule and veteran stopgaps getting older. But if this lays the foundation for the next 2003 and 2004 and beyond, then it’ll be worth it.

Well, if the defense at the end of the year is a real thing, and we could establish a competent offensive line, I think we can be competitive with anybody. And our coaches are not incompetent. So, I'm hopeful.

This likely does not bode well for Anfernee Jennings, although I like the player, he's probably perceived as too expensive.
