PATRIOTS NEWS Looks like the Pats are re-signing Chaisson

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
Insults will get you nowhere. In good humour remember, it is "o" before "u" except after "q" as in "quote and quorum." Yuor welcome.

Now I'm completely baffled. What about "contiguous"? Or "fluorescent"? Or "buoy"? (Is that why you have to pronounce it "boo-ee"?)

Freedom of speech (and by extension, spelling) doesn't help with the question of the best "options." You can put a primitive hieroglyph of a sideways bird at the beginning of each written sentence, and they won't put you in jail for that act itself (it might conceivably have implications if it's hate bird speech or maybe somehow in terms of contracts, but not for the grammatical/spelling error itself.

The most important thing, of course, is to be free to speak (and write,) but there is also the threat that what one says and writes will devolve into mutually unintelligible mutterings of madmen.

To prevent this outcome, and without any great controversy, we all accept (then rebel against) grammar and spelling.

If you want to subvert the status quo, you do things like spell "the," "tha," or replace "s" with "z."

If you want to have wide comprehension, you learn the most accepted forms.

The hyphen is often used to make meanings more clear, as in @Mike the Brit 's observation about "re-signing." I like it. I just don't know that it's standard - that would take a survey of style manuals and dictionaries and the like. But it does clear up the problem of the antonym pair hiding in the same word.

That's a situation we cannot in good conscience sanction, and we should cleave to clearer solutions
I'm from Maine. Maybe someone can explain what you posted in Downeaster.

You make great points One.. But referring back the SB specifically our defense essentially shut down Seattle's offense..

As we all know and discussed the utter ineptitude of the offense is the direct reason why the defense was on the field constantly.. so the more opportunities Seattle got it's only a matter of time before walker got loose..

Even with those issues on defense they were still a top tier defense in 2025 with no elite pass rushers or littered with all pros.. the defense is the reason they won in the postseason. But to your points Vrabel and the coaching staff know they need to get better in certain areas on defense.. depth is vital for this team.
They need more speed and length at LB, and a deep FS. An EDGE and backup CB will help too. But yea, the offense is the priority, specifically the OL.

Absolutely.. we need depth especially.. I'm not opposed to bring in a veteran at LB.. Edmond has length and speed.. and we likely draft another one.. who knows what Swinson will develop into.. offense I'm leaning more towards Wilson being the eventual C.. if you remember he was taking starters snaps there in training camp over Bradbury at one point.. so definitely address OL..

Diggs will be here one way or another I'm convinced.. need to make a move for a Brian Thomas Jr. Who reportedly may be available..

EDGE!! Getting EDGE rushers anyway you can.. FA, trades, drafting whatever.. Landry good career but probably done with that knee.. Hendrickson would help, mafe, or Phillips.. prefer a younger player.. CB agreed need depth there signing a Mike Hilton would help round out the depth is a better player currently than Austin or woods.. Dial will also be in the mix. Safety resign Hawkins here me out: for continuity and he's at least a veteran that won't totally screw it up.. but sign a Geno stone at S as well as drafting a guy..

Also I've turned a corner and I want Isaiah likely at TE to return home.. he wants to be here.

Can someone tell me what's the incentive for the player to retire as opposed to being on injury and collecting guaranteed money.

What happens if Landry stays back in a semi injured state vs what happens if he retires.

Landry stay - 2026 cap hit and guaranteed money paid and dead cap for future years ?

Landry retires - 2026 cap hit, what player gets paid and dead cap for future years.

How much do patriots save or lose with each option. ?

Good points to bring up..

I really think it comes down to what Vrabel wants to do.. does he honor his contract.. ? Does he just give him his guarantees this season? From the sounds of things he has to have another knee procedure.. this will be his 3rd I believe in his career.. he's about to be 30 and retirement might be the best option for him.. he's being paid to be a starting edge rusher.. based on his contract.. as I'm not a cap specialist I'm sure Miguel or someone can better answer the cap questions.. but for what really matters most in the players themselves and on field performances I'd say Vrabel does Landry a solid should he choose to retire this offseason.. he's one of Vrabel's guys.

Au contraire.
Only a rouge

like you're self

could of cared about this, persay.

I think the team normally offers the player extra $ in an INJURY SETTLEMENT in order to clear the roster and the cap.

Terms are usually UNdisclosed from what I remember, so is hard to tell how much more or less it might have been from just the existing contract.

Not sure if team gets any exemptions of that settlement money to not count as a cap hit. Maybe @Miguel might know. I certainly don’t.

I don't understand the solid part ...

He had 26 million guaranteed and he played 12 odd games. If we pay that 26 million for 12 games, that's overpay .

I don't understand the solid part here.

Getting engulfed and washed out are completely different than diving inside. If Walker is going to the edge, the offense will engulf and wash the EDGE inside.

Someone like Jennings is great at holding the OL off him (avoids washing out), but then he will not have any sacks.

I remember Walker getting to the sideline and then turning up field. I would have to rewatch it. Thanks for the heads up
Chiasson bites inside all the time.

It's like we're arguing here over things that one person sees all the time and the other person doesn't see.

Solid meaning because he's one of his guys going back to Tennessee and should Landry retire maybe Vrabel pays him out the remainder of his guarantees?.. again I try not to get so much into cap talk because I'm not that type of fan.. just (speaking for myself).. but i thought your post was interesting so just wanted to post my take on it.. but I'm sure thier are plenty of posters more versed in the cap dollars.. if this makes any sense.

Thanks gumby!! That's what I was getting at.. INJURY SETTLEMENT when I mentioned to @Toofy about Vrabel doing him a solid.. thank you!

They really need another CB, Lucky this year with injuries.

You can also add TE

I might re sign Lowe, run back the tackles, and leave the OL until the middle rounds for about three guards.

LB, TE, CB first (not necessarily in that order) then guards and a RB. You can get good guards in the middle rounds.

I think that the situation is:

(1) If Landry retires because of injury, his remaining signing bonus hits the cap as dead money (although some can be postponed if he retires -- or is designated as retiring -- after 1 June).
(2) If he has "guaranteed" salary (he does) then there is a question about what it is guaranteed for, but, assuming that it includes injury protection, as it almost certainly does, the team becomes liable for the whole of that guaranteed salary ($11m, in Landry's case).
(3) "Injury settlements" only come into play when it is a question of carrying a player on Injured Reserve during the season or not. (Teams aren't allowed to cut injured players during the season, although they are in the off-season (hello, David Andrews).) So an "injury settlement" allows teams to get out of having to pay a player's salary for the rest of the season, which they would have to do if he was on IR. The player, on the other hand, if it is not truly a season-ending injury, can take the original team's money and find another team once he is healthy again.
So I really don't get what people are talking about when they say that Vrabel would be doing Landry a "solid" by making an injury settlement. As it is, the team is on the hook for $16.35 million in salary and bonus this season, and $19 million if Landry retires. Sounds like enough to me!

Not sure how likely this will be happening, but I'm all in on bringing him home.

That’s why we have moderators to manage resign v re-sign.
They have oversight for this type of oversight.
Are you going to cleave to correct usage to reduce misunderstanding, or cleave from the restrictions of fifth grade grammar?
The moderators can sanction these rules, with the proper permission or penalty.
I’m just waiting for the official start of free agency when the final list drops of players dropped, and consider who we can clip from a competitor to clip to our roster.

Injury settlements count against the cap.

Absolutely.. from what I've heard about him he's told folks in his circle he wants Vrabel to bring him home..
