All year the offense thrived on chunk plays. I said all week this offense, w a 23 yr old QB in his first tournament and an offense without true game breakers, Maye was going to HAVE to take chances and throw into tight areas. Collinsworth said the EXACT same thing.
If anyone doesn't think mcdaniels told Maye the exact OPPOSITE you're a ****ing moron. All playoffs everything was super conservative and it showed in the lack of production. They rarely challenged the middle of the field 15-25 yards downfield. They were not going to Mount 10-12 play scoring drives on Seattle.
They needed to THROW on first down. And what does ****ing mcdaniels do? 4/5 drive starters were runs.
The entire game plan screamed ****ing Bill the Bozo....play conservative, close to the vest, don't take chances, and wait for the other team to turn it over...hope to get the ball at the other teams 30. If you're going to lose, go down swinging. Mcdaniels, once again, did exactly what I said he would do....he didn't start throwing downfield until they were down 2 scores .
This game was winnable. The outcome is on Mcdaniels
I do agree the outcome was on McDaniels, but I don't agree it was winnable through downfield throws. Seattle's scheme early in the game really took that away through early pressure and a smart zone/match, often with two high and sticky coverage that would have made downfield stuff super tricky. the couple of deep throws that worked late in the game I think had more to do with Seattle somewhat lifting its foot off the gas at a few moments because it knew the game was in hand.
As I said above, the McDaniels game plan was surprisingly bad and unadaptive in the first 2/3 of the game: despite Seattle showing very quickly that this was going to be a pressure game and that the left side of our line was super vulnerable, Josh (and Drake) just did not get consistent tight end and running back chips to help the left side (I have no idea why?).
In addition, our answer actually WAS in part the run game, if they had gone jumbo and forced Seattle out of the 2 high look. But we ran jumbo ONCE -- and it was a pass play? And we had few quick passing outlets, but the only possible answer were indeed short swing passes to the flat or quick throws, not down the field shots.
Look, at the end of the road, Seattle was clearly the better team. I'm not saying we could have won this game -- but McDaniels just did the team no favors on this one. And it's odd, because I think he's a very good coach.
