But that section that’s screenshot on X is really the good part.
Just FYI for sites like this, the NYT, Wapo, etc there are a couple of ways to bypass paywalls.Paywall
This is a players coach.
Such a polar opposite of the much loved BB years, and I love it as well. Opposite of LolMayo as well. This proves that in today’s NYFL, coaches can be tough AND get through to their players. No need to be soft and coddle.
Bill showed that ability, too. I recall him being very nice to Cassel after his father died and giving rookies a hard time for spending too much money on cars, and stuff like that.Such a polar opposite of the much loved BB years, and I love it as well. Of course his tone and expression is different than Vrabel's. Vrabel is so much like Big Bill.
The media deserves a jerk. They are all fawning over Vrabel now. Wait a few months. Most everything I've read say that this is something Belichick would do as well. There have been plenty of stories of Bill getting the team to laugh, often by picking on one of them. Surely you've heard of the "get a quarterback from Foxboro High School" story. Another one that I remember was when he offered the team the day off of practice if a lineman could field a punt. He did that a couple of times. Both times, the lineman was successful.
Bill was a jerk to the media, but not always with the players.
I think our collective memories of Bill are of a meaner/gruffer guy than he actually (usually) was. He just did not tolerate fools gladly.I think I remember the Cassel thing as well. Thanks for the reminder.
The sense I get is that the early dynasty era players (Law, Bruschi, Vrabel, Willie, Troy Brown, etc.) kind of laughed off Bill being "mean" to them but still took it to heart. But Bill was just Bill back then and a lot of them knew him from his first stint here. He wasn't the LEGEND Bill Belichick yet. He was just a hard ass coach that they appreciated but also still had fine relationships with. Most everything I've read say that this is something Belichick would do as well.
