RKK on 98.5 today: the league plans for a two-game preseason and 18-game regular-season, with every team playing one game overseas each year. He didn't give a timeframe, but apparently it's on the drawing board. The reason, he said, is to expand revenue (of course).

Yes, this appeared inevitable but still ...

He said this just now on the radio with high confidence.

Not an IF, just a WHEN.

8 home games, 8 away games, 2 international games per year for every team.

So, it's not just the extra games that will produce wear and tear on the players, but also travel.

They'll need to expand rosters and change the rules.

…and there will be only two preseason games

No one is clamoring for more games. They'll ruin the game before too long.

If they decide to move to a 18 game regular season then they should lengthen the schedule and give each team two byes. The players union should also make sure the players receive additional compensation based on a longer regular season.

Personally I think it is stupid to increase the schedule because the current regular season/playoffs is already a battle of attrition. However, the billionaire owners are greedy and are always looking to make more money.

That’s going to be a scheduling nightmare.

There aren’t enough weeks between Labor Day and New Years Day. They’ll be playing a full slate of games Labor Day weekend and still extending the season into January. Hopefully they can be smart about aligning bye weeks and international travel, unless they have to eliminate bye weeks to make the schedule fit.

It will go to 20 sooner or later. They will get rid of the preseason games.

IIRC, wasn't there supposed to be another bye week added if an 18th game was added?

having every team get an overseas game makes sense. I hate it, but it makes sense.

Enough with the overseas games. Players need to put their feet down and say NO!

We already get to week 16/17 now with two teams with a combined 5 wins "battling" it out with backup quarterbacks. Let's add another week to that so the owners can increase their net worths a few billion more.

I guess it could make sense to have the season end on MLK Day. Wild card round the next weekend, divisional round and conference championships follow, so the Super Bowl is the end of February.

Eighteen regular-season games PLUS playoffs simply invites attrition that will water down the game, even with expanded rosters and two byes. Sixteen games was the limit, IMO. The owners' lust for money via pandering overseas is what this is all about and it sucks.

It is widely known and expected in the next CBA just 4 few short years away, though I expect to see a push when the new TV deals come up in 2029.

The players will get an additional game check. Big whoop. Crumbs falling off the table as the owners slice the pie.

1) Two byes makes sense.

2) Yes, there will be increase in money to the players, but that is always the case in any negotiations.
