It's hard not to see a scenario where Drake isn't the Pats QB for the next decade. He has clearly made the jump and if the Pats commit to protecting him and upgrading his weapons it's realistic to think this team will again become a perennial contender.

I think it's safe to say Maye's price has gone up significantly, and if he makes it to (or wins) a ring he could become very expensive. I don't know enough about his makeup to determine if he'll hold the Pats feet to the fire on this.

We've seen teams again and again swing and miss on the QB spot (including the Pats). It's a miracle we have Maye after 20 years of Brady. This franchise is blessed.

So in hindsight it seems the Pats might have wanted to be proactive midseason and try to carve out a new longer term deal. I wouldn't want them to do it now as I don't want any distractions at this time of year. But no matter what happens in the next 3 weeks I hope they do this. I think if they wait until year 3 or 4 the possibility exists Drake moves on and the Pats are starting over, which would be a waste of a window that has opened in the AFC East.

Considering they still have 3 years left this may be premature, but we know if they go to that 5th year it's highly unlikely he returns after that, so in my mind they really only have 2 seasons left to sort it out.

Curious what others think, and apologies if this has been addressed in another of the thousand Drake Maye threads here.

Can’t be done. Believe it’s restricted by the CBA.

NFL rules say he needs to finish 3 seasons before he can sign an extension.

I'm sure the team and his agent are talking all the time, though.

I'm quite sure our front office knows they have to figure out the best way to keep him long-term, even if that means breaking the bank.

And we have all the leverage. We have the 5th year option if we need it, then the franchise tag, but I doubt we'll need them.

I think we learned from the Brady Era that being cute with team-friendly deals may lead to trouble later down the road.

In short, I think they'll just pay the man the going rate and be glad they have him.

As has been mentioned by the very astute observers before me, the Pats have no choice but to wait until year 3 or 4. So the reality of extending any 1st rounder is there are only 2 seasons to do an extension. Even should a team exercise the 5th year option they aren't working out a conventional extension in year 5, they're working on an entirely new contract or preparing to tag the player

The Patriots could pick up his 5th year option and wait to pay him an extension after the 2026 season. Nothing can happen this offseason. Needs three years of service time.

He's innocent until proven guilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patriots need to maximize the next 2 years by signing a billion and one free agents.

No, I want to load up the team next year before we sit down at the negotiating table.

The Russian in “Rounders” comes to mind: “Pay the man”….

It will cost us about 50M AAV….let’s pick up some free agents and make a title run again next year before we do that.

It's going to be more that that, the top 11 QBs are higher than 50AAV, Drake is likely to be in the mid 60s if you takes full market value.

Full market value means resetting the market. Jackson’s and Mahomes’ next deals are coming up. They’ll set the floor.

Drake was going to be the highest paid player in the league, one way or another.

I believe Drake will take a team friendly deal to get other good players especially oline. So my guess is 10 years 550 million, 250 million gtd , with trade reset clause in year 5 depending upon how much the cap has increased . Need to keep a reset year in every 5 years .

The option can not be picked up until after the 3rd year

As has been stated the CBA restricts rookies from extending until I believe after the 3rd year - so it couldn't be done now if they wanted to.

They'll extend him before they get to the 5th year rookie 1st round extension - but even that means that he takes less than he would as a free agent.

If he wants to win Super Bowls like Brady he'll take less than market value - but get it guaranteed - and know that he'll be freeing up salary for say, a good LT to protect him for the duration as well.

Thanks to all for the education. I wasn't aware they couldn't negotiate with Drake until after the 3rd year. Learn something new every day. Hopefully it gets done the day after his 3rd season ends (next February!).

Can't extend him until after next season. But if he has duplicates or has an even better season in 2025 then he will get locked up to a record setting contract. However, if he struggles next season, I'm not paying him yet.

As others have said, he is not eligible until after next year.

When he is eligible, at his current trajectory he will be in the top 3 of highest paid players in the league.
