So we signed this 8-year vet (29-year old) WR to the practice squad in the last week: Trent Sherfield Sr **

Some highlights:

He is 6-1, 206 and previously played on Vikings, 49ers, & Donkeys.

Now when I was reading the other “sneaky signing” thread ( credit @SONS_OF_BELICHICK) , I kind of mentally poo-pooed the whole signed DE Darrel Taylor to get intel on the Roughnecks. But now that I noticed this signing that was buried in with 3-4 other PS moves, I’m wondering if there isn’t actually a little strategy & truth to that going on here by Vrabel & crew.

Maybe Shefrield gives them data on potential AFCCG & SB teams while Taylor rats out the Texans. ??

The other thought is that him being relatively almost tall ( 6-1 ), that he is the insurance policy for Mack Hollins. But I don’t like that thought ( that Mack ain’t back), so I don’t wanna go there.

Patriots Make Changes to the Practice Squad

The Patriots announced that CB Miles Battle, RB D'Ernest Johnson, T Lorenz Metz and WR Trent Sherfield Sr. have been signed to the practice squad and DL Fabien Lovett and WR Brandon Smith have been released from the practice squad.

Weekday scout team piece.

There is ZERO chance the most complex/difficult offensive system in the NFL is going to put a new waiver guy in at WR in a playoff game. You wanna see Trent Shenfield Jr pick off Diggs all day or flatten Pop Douglas????

Ocho Cinco and Kyle Brady couldn't learn it over full seasons. Kyle Williams took half a year.

You and I have a better chance of seeing the field Sunday than Trent Shenfield Jr.

The Darrell Taylor intel thing is more real. THIS is the more far fetched idea.

.

Mack Hollins is done for the year. He was IR’d after week 16, right?

Well, I miss Mack “Mack Hollins” Hollins!

Don’t disagree. That was the main point intel signing which = scout team.

It would be a hard task to ask him to come in for AFCCG or SB and run right routes.

But if you are desperate….. I’ve heard before of qbs in huddle calling a play and whispering to one newbie his particular route concept. Pretty unlikely though I agree

Have you heard of that happening in an NFL playoff game?

I’d rather bring WRs who have formerly played in McDaniels’ system like Tre Nixon or N’keal Ha…….. Oh never mind.
BTW, noticed old friend Kristian Wilkerson got picked up by the Bills Tuesday. Probably for the same reason. To run Patriot type routes for the scout team if they advance and play the Pats.

No more beginning of season IIRC.

The only reason Sherfield was signed was because he plays on Special Teams Coverage Units. He's averaged 180 snaps a season over his career.

I'm waiting for a snek signing.

Trent Sherfield has always been a very good special teams player. Not a bad “break glass in case of emergency” signing.

And we're a bit short on WRs right now.

How are the Pats short on WR? They have 5 on the Active Roster and had 3 on the PS. They swapped out Smith for Sherfield.

None of the 5 WR on the Active Roster are on the Injury Report.

Brain fart. Forgot we have 5 after Hollins.

Whee. We signed a guy who's managed to catch more than 19 balls ONCE in eight seasons.
