So @Ian wrote this nice little article about the Boutte Tribune story. (Shout out: thx)

Vrabel Praises Patriots WR Boutte's Courage: 'Not easy to do' | PatsFans.com

Buried in there was this little nugget that I didn’t recall:

Mayo pointing out during the coaches breakfast that offseason that Boutte was just a young kid, and he was committed to try and help him rather than just give up on him.

“We’re continuing to gather information on that. He’s still on the team,” said Mayo at the time. “He’s still on the team, and hopefully we can continue to develop this player but really develop him as a man as well going forward. I think it’s important to remember, like some of these guys are very young. They’ve made mistakes in the past. It’s easy to just throw them away, but there are certain instances where you’re like, ‘Alright, I can help this guy out.’ And I feel like we have a good player development group there that will definitely help us going forward.”

Just got me to thinking, if Boutte continues to grow & possibly becomes a prime-Diggs-like counterpart to Maye; ……
will we all look back in 10 years and say that the Mayo experiment was actually NOT a complete failure just because of these two players being retained & picked respectively

no. the Mayo experiment was a complete and total failure

It’s just really unfortunate.

There’s not a lot of players who from their rookie year had as much universal respect as he had, he had an admirable career both as a player and as a person, and I think he could have developed into a good coach over time.

It was just a ridiculously premature decision to give him that job so early.

I thought Boutte and Douglass were drafted by Belichick?
Yes but the gambling thing blew up w his (boutte) arrest on the Mayo watch. Key word in my first post “respectively”

He could have easily cut bait on someone else’s pick. So one way to look at was a ‘courageous’ choice, especially if he was telling RK no. But as others said: It won’t outweigh the total incompetency of the rest of his tenure. I’m just saying that I was surprised by the call it ‘moral courage’ to stand by Boutte.

We, as fans, tend to boil a coach and players down to their W-L record, but I think this is an excellent point about there are other things that happen, and some of it can be good, even as the rest is a clown car operation.

Boutte was their best WR last season, they weren't going to cut him over college gambling.

Ok, but judging by rest of his decisions/choices, ….. beforehand would you have trusted him to make that „right“ choice?
-easy to say in retrospect that he was best guy. We dropped another most talented wr over a freakin text message for gods sake. So there was a history.

You are assuming that since Mayo said he is going to try to help Boutte mature that he actually did. I think Boutte deserves credit, and until he credits Mayo, we are just assuming that Mayo had an impact because he said he wanted to.

They effectively told Brown "Look, we'll give you a pass for your past crap, but we expect you to turn over a new leaf and keep your nose clean." He couldn't manage it for two weeks.

TBF, Kraft had a plan that Belichick would mentor Mayo for two years, resign after 2024 (presumably after setting the NFL win record), and then Mayo would've taken over this year. But 2022 and 2023 lit that plan on fire.

I said NOTHING about Mayo doing anything other than MAKING A DECISION

Board favorite pastime knocking down one of these…,, putting words in my mouth to win Board points…. Whatever. Don’t bother to respond please because I won’t.

When the Steelers hire a HC they tend to keep him for decades.

Maybe Bob can take Art Rooney and Mayo on another trip to Israel.

Just spitballin’ here.
Sorry, Robert isn’t hiring Art Rooney, he’s already got Jonathan in place.

don't worry about what he says... r6 wouldn't know what a strawman is even if it walked up and punched him in the face

If anything, we learned Mayo was all talk and planning, organizational development and actual successful execution of programs were areas in which he had zero experience in.

Did he offer some encouraging words to Boutte? Possibly. Did he put a program in place to get the kid on the right track? Doubtful. I credit Boutte and the friends and family who actually give a crap about him the credit.
