OT: Matthew Judon Being Waived in Miami

And Vrabel would also prefer to have Jennings and Tavai out there, his starting OLB's against BUF (3rd and 5th most reps at OLB against BUF).

In the end, the question whether to replace our #4 OLB (Ponder). My answer is a firm "no".
Tavai is mostly an ILB used on early downs as a run stuffer.

We'll see what they think in the end: there's nothing out there. It couldn't hurt to add him to our rational guys: we have plenty of those.

So which Edge are you releasing for a few games from an old ineffective Mathew Judon?

This is why its tough to commit big money or draft assets to edge rushers over 30. He was only 32 when he hit the cliff after being our most important player the prior 3 seasons to that

It's pretty much true of all the guys who rely on speed and quickness to do their job. There are outliers, but most WR's, Corners, Running backs etc.. drop off a cliff around 30. Some guys are able to keep going if they rely on their football knowledge as well, but those tend to be the outliers. And as much as I hate to say it I wouldn't bring Diggs back at his salary. That's going to be a tough decision by Vrabel, and a tough release, but those are the decisions he gets paid to make.

Thought we had an extra spot but we just signed Muma.

Tavai was brought back as a utility backup, to play ST's, as a limited part of the ILB rotation and as an OLB when needed in case of injury.

I believe that Tavai STARTED the BUF game at OLB.

Tavai is a versatile backup. I do agree that his primary role should be as a run-stuffer and as a top STer,

Tavai had 15 total snaps on Defense with Spillane out. Gibbens had 70, Ellis had 60, Landry had 52 and Chaisson had 49.

I understand.
ILB: Spillane, Ellis, Gibbens, Tavai
OLB: Chaisson, Landry, Jennings, Ponder, Tavai

Mapu?
Muma?
Swinson?

Yeah Tavai is averaging about 11 snaps a game on D. We should find out what Muma can do but Mapu? He has 20 tackles in 14 played games...4 PD's, This is his 3rd year. He's not productive enough to take a spot on the active roster. Swinson should have stayed on the PS.

We have a few players that don't appear to be contributing at al. Wallace, Dippre, Swinson. I'm getting nervous about Bryant. We had to bring in Mumford, Bryant couldn't fill that role?

I'm disappointed Dippre hasn't done much of anything but he does have Henry and Hooper in front of him. He's a rookie. I hope he shows something in 2026 camp. Wallace has got to be a serviceable backup at G but perhaps Vrabel wants Brown the 1st off the bench with more experience. Same with Munford who has roughly the same amount of career starting snaps as Lowe. Bryant is a 7th round project. Swinson should be PS. The team nailed the draft and FA....if Swinson is a miss then the team still did a great job with draft picks. JMO.

With $99.2M remaining guaranteed. Cut with a post June 1 designation the dead money charge could be handled as a $67.4 million charge in 2026 and $31.8 million in 2027. He's probably not going anywhere, the next Miami HC will be likey be saddled with him as a reclamation project. After that debacle the other night it's hard to believe McDaniel will last past season's end
I view it as exactly the opposite. They're stuck paying and thus playing Tua, hoping to get something out of him and no other good coach will want to walk into that situation.

So I expect they'll stick with Tua and thus McDaniel and hope he can turn Tua around unless someone like Josh McDaniels approaches them interested in the job claiming they can do a better job turning Tua around - though I'm not sure even Josh thinks he can succeed there.

No doubt they'll be looking to use a high draft pick on a QB and will certainly part with McDaniel when they can part with Tua, but until then I think they'll remain in transition. In fact I'd give the Jets a better chance of avoiding the AFC East basement next season.

Swinson is a deep backup that is on the 53 as having potential for 2026. Vrabel has assembled several of these players.

They are usually inactive. Some examples are Swinson, Gregory, Wallace, Dippre, Bryant and DaVito.
========================================
Ponder is one with potential has succeeded in moving up the depth chart and contributing.
====
In addition, there are many with potential on the Practice Squad. The difference is that the ones on the 53 would be in more danger of being poached. Some have been elevated for a game or two or three. They go back to the Practice Squad.
========
For me, all the rest have their roles (well, except for Mapu who is the obvious cut should we need a roster spot).
========
Just spitballing, but is there a team out there who would give assets for DaVito?

What could we get from the Dolphins?

We need a third QB. Who would that be?

Some websites list Tavai as a OLB - those websites are mostly errant. Tavai is really strong and slow, and is not usually used on the outside because he lacks the speed. Tavai is a typical BB draft pick (big, strong, and slow), and Patricia chose him in R2 while in Detroit. Tavai is very limited in Vrabel's defense - I think he played only about 20% even with injuries.

Until Monday Night that was pretty much how I viewed it but there were too many Miami players making 'business' decisions out there and I don't see how McDaniel survives that. No matter what lip service the players give he's lost that team

This is interesting - wonder why they're relasing him now?

He played 23 snaps against the Steelers (35%) and finished with a tackle. He's got 16 tackles for the season, 3 QB hits, one tackle for a loss, and a pass defended. And they've had him playing special teams.

One number that obviously stands out: Zero sacks.

But again, it's just weird that they're letting him

Good luck Judon, ypu were a true warrior.
