Offseason has started and the Red Sox made their first move.

Sonny Gray and 20 million in, **** Fitts and Brandon Clarke out.

I don't like this trade for one reason. Giving up prospects that you could otherwise flip into a bigger deal. Gray is 36 and on a one year deal. Breslow continues, post Crochet, to make terrible deals. He is now actively harming the organization.

Is this the same Sonny Gray rumored to be coming to the Sox for what seems like a decade - or could it be his son?!

Dude is old. (says the 60 yr old). They are so inconsistent. Get young guys, extend them on a team friendly deal, then go give away prospects for a guy who's best days are behind him.

That deal he made last year trading Tibbs Jr, the 15th pick in the prior years draft to the Dodgers for Dustin May, who sucks, and did suck..was criminal. He should have be fired for that move alone.

Well with the HUGE Grissom trade in the “books”, I’m pretty sure we’ll read that the Sox have packed their bags and are leaving the Winter Meetings with the old, “Our job is done here” mantra….

Great start to roster building this offseason. While we could have resolved our infield issues by bringing back our 3rd baseman (Bregman - yeah, he’s coming back - riiiiight), allowing for us to finally settle down our 2nd base issues with (Mayer) along with signing a potential 30 homer DH or 1st baseman (Alonso) in case Casas is not healthy, costing $’s without having to make a trade (remember how well the Mookie, & Sale trades worked out?). Instead we’ve got 2 new pitchers to battle it out for our 4th or 5th starter, along with a “valuable tbd roster spot” through the Grissom trade, and don’t forget we won’t have the dreaded Luxury Tax to “worry” about paying, (“Phew”)!

Sooo much dribble about big trades to hear our GM tell us that teams don’t want to trade their “best” players when we could have resigned one of our “best” players and bought one of the “best” right handed power hitters in the game. But hey, why do we need a right handed power hitter now that Abreau is ready to face more lefties!

Yeah it's a little alarming, but remember Bo Bichette hasn't signed yet and neither has Bregman. My guess is neither are seeing the market they thought they would. I am okay with not getting more 30 plus guys in trade or FA unless they are elite. Alonso to me isn't that. I do firmly believe that Breslow has no idea what he is doing and other teams are taking advantage of him now. He needs to go and put someone in that knows what they are doing.

I believe he knows what he's doing enough, and he's hamstrung by a an owner who gaslights us. They filled Fenway last summer and made the post season, they have maybe just above zero intention of improving the team. Just be good enough to bang the house out and compete for the division. They don't want to pay like a big market team, they want to be have young guys on team friendly deals and then jettison them when they get to expensive.

The Boston Royals. The Massachusetts A's.

I’d like Bichette given his age *but* he’d best be the answer to second base and we won’t get him being more concerned with payroll excess… I thought Alonso would have been as good or an improved J. D. Drew which would have helped….

I'd do Bichette at second, Mayer at third. He proved he is elite over there and that saves the Bregman money. Just need Mayer to say healthy.

Agreed! Think I’ll send a box of “Wheaties” along to Mayer and hope he stays healthy for a season so we can find out exactly the kind of player we’ve got…..

I see free agent pitcher Michael King decided to resign with the Padres. I believe this proves once again beyond reasonable doubt that the 10 most meaningless words evah are: “Considered to be a target of the Boston Red Sox”!

They aren't going to do chit this year because they made the playoffs and had a full house most nights in late summer. Then, when they don't improve and they end up .500 or worse, have low ratings and empty seats, they'll over react next year, fire the GM and overpay to be relevant. Win the off season.

The Boston Red Jetes.

“Rinse & Repeat”…..

Wilson Contreras? A .258 career hitter? Why are they making this deal?

Meh, this one I can see making at least some sense. They certainly can't count on Casas at 1st, okay-ish power and Fenway will be much friendlier to Contreras' swing than Busch Stadium. That said, we'd certainly like to see a bit more than an aging band-aid at 1st

This is what I am talking about with this team, the inconsistencies with acquisitions. I'm guessing this guy has a team friendly contract.

There were/are cheaper options but I'd guess St Louis is probably paying some of the freight. I haven't looked at the trade details closely, I don't even know if they've published the financials yet
