Was watching a segment on Callahan with Giardi talking about gonzo and whether or not he's having a down season..
As we all know he's been playing more zone this season. Obviously he missed the first few games of the season.. without him the secondary was giving up huge plays.. and Alex Austin was a liability in coverage.

Since he's been back in the line up the secondary has been stout.

His presence in the secondary allows Marcus Jones to be able to man the slot and take advantage of his opportunities.. even though Gonzo doesn’t yet have an Interception he allows others to make plays.

What do you think about Gonzo's thus far?

Has been playing great football ... does better in man vs zone ... can man up on any receiver he's covering ... last year he started slow but came on over the course of the season ... this year he did not have a slow start to begin the year by my reckoning... Has drawn only 2 flags... compare him to Surtain, who has 5, with two DPI calls... An added bonus - he is in year 3, and he's only 23 years old...

Durability is a back of the mind concern... but when he plays, he plays well... as is his next contract... he will be expensive ... worth the cost, but expensive ...

No. His stats are elite. He gave up a TD against Cincinnati, but it’s the NFL & **** happens to the best CBs at times. I don’t even see how the argument could be made that he’s having anywhere close to a down season. How??? Where??? Why??? It’s laughable. He’s an All-Pro worthy CB..ALWAYS. Plus, we’re undefeated since he’s returned to the lineup.

Agreed.. also I don't get the idea that there are 5 other CBs better.. Stingley is phenomenal how he has the strong benefits of demon edge rusher.. gonzo doesn't.. Surtain is also phenomenal but also has the benefits of excellent rushing.. gonzo has none of wich and he's the primary reason why the defense gets coverage sacks.. Mcduffie isn't in gonzo, Surtain or Stingleys league.. he's not a top 10 CB IMO.

Yep. Agreed. This is what Callahan and Giardi mentioned as in the YouTube video I put up. As I mentioned look at some of the other CBs in Gonzo's class.. Surtain has a ferocious front led by bonitto..

Stingley Jr. Has demon edge rushers.. gonzo has none of wich and still balls out.

"better" is subjective...

they all play the position in a different manner, each has their own strengths...

a strawman comparison - Gronk/Kelce... both played TE, but in a different way... you adapt what you are doing based on the relative strength of the player...

Good points points. I should have said "ranked " ahead of him. Gonzo is the most physically gifted out of all of them.. he is also bigger at 6'2.. well surtain is about the same height but Gonzo has a bigger frame... Stingley gambles more and that allows for more opportunities for him to make plays.. I never seen anything special with mcduffie.. sauce forgot he was an elite QB after he got paid..

aint gonna lie, Sauce on the clots bothers me... he makes a good defense better

Indy has a good defense but nothing like Houstons front.. they may very well force Jones on IR today.. sauce had a better defense in NYJs and he still was pedestrian..

This is one of the youngest teams in the NFL, the defensive backfield is a work in progress. Gonzo and the rest will look better as the defense as a whole gets better. It’s a team game.

Mitchell Tinsley!

He's looked very good imo.
We don't have a great a pass rush, and that is as important to coverage as anything else.
I think people have unrealistic expectations of what a #1 CB is.
For those that are old enough to remember, TLaw seemed to alternate great seasons with average. I don't know, or care what his stats say, I vividly remember Law having somewhat down seasons almost every second year, and he's in the HOF.
I've watched Surtain get beat this year. I think people are under the impression that #1 lockdown CBs don't get beat, but they do.
Sure there are guys like Revis that during his best years never seemed to get beat, but that is the exception not the rule.

What I think is that it’s typical for BSM and this board to be looking for negatives to discuss when talking about a team coming off a 4 win season, that preseason was expected to total 8 or 9 wins, questionable to even make the playoffs, and now two thirds of the way through the season is 10-2 with the best record in the NFL and competing for the only AFC playoff bye. Sheesh.

Law said himself on WEEI that he wished he had the size of Gonzo.. at 5"11 law bullied WR's and was fearless.. nonetheless law is rightfully deserving NOFmer.. revis was the 2010s version of lock down.. I mean you couldn't even complete a pass on him some games.. but yes I wish Callahan and Giardi would have mentioned what you said he has no pas rush.. the sacks we do get are do to coverage.. even when milt was in there..

Gonzo has been the most impressive to me he doesn't have the pass rush demons stingley Jr. Has... or bonitto like surtain does.. Mc duffle isn't on Gonzo's level.. the Yonger generation needs to youtube ty law he was every bit of of lockdown CB..

Gonzo has the Technique of law, the instincts of revis, he plays the run like Charles Woodson.. glad we have him!!

We will lock him up with a big contract as we should. Those guys don't grow on trees.
McDuffie is a great player. He's small, but plays really tough.
And he was getting beat all over the field on Thanksgiving.
It happens, even elite CBs have bad days/games.
I think some people think a #1 should look like Revis, but that's unrealistic, as he was the most dominate CB I've ever watched.

Mcduffie in my opinion isn't on the level of Gonzo, surtain or stingley. Good but can be a liability for KCs defense.. Definitely agreed elite Player's do have off games.. however the greats always come back and rise to the occasion.. agreed revis was absolutely unfathomable.. couldn't even complete a pass on him... I believe he and ty law are related.. I believe we'll see him locked up by the off season.. Gonzo has earned it.m

I've been watching football for too long. All I can think about is O.J. McDuffie, old Patrick Surtain, and Darryl Stingley. I'm finally getting used to not thinking of Tony Gonzalez.
