Kraft, not Belichick, was the problem

99% of the football stuff was left to Bill. Only when something clearly wasn’t working (like Patricia and Judge running offense) did Kraft demand a change. Bill had more leeway given to him than any other coach in the league. To somehow come back and lay a bunch of issues at Krafts feet is ridiculous.

Bill deserves (and gets) a ton of credit for building the program and the success it had. Bill also deserves the lions share of the blame for how it ended - bad drafts, Brady leaving, Gronk situation, family & friends coaching staff, M. Butler, not talking to Mac, low wins at the end…
Always amazes me to see people try to say Bill was forced by Kraft to pick Mac Jones... and yet silence from them when you point out Bill still had the freedom to hire Matt Patricia as his offensive coordinator. That wasn't Kraft.

Funny how that works.

You excel at saying things people never said.

I didn't say #1.

And then you say I didn't say #2.

It's in the very first post of this thread.

How can I take you seriously?

Bill would have never picked Mac if Kraft didn't make him. Mac is not the type of QB Bill would want. Maye is more the prototype that he would have taken.

Deleted.

Wrong thread

I wonder if anyone listened to Scott Zolak interviewing David Andrews this morning.

Some incredible nuggets from Andrews regarding Alex Guerrero.

So, Guerrero was dispensing advice to many players in the locker room. It wasn't only Danny Amendola who noticed the dissension.

Andrews basically thought Guerrero was out of his mind. Andrews related that Guerrero once told him he should stop doing squats in the weight room because it was bad for his knees, and that he should tell that to the weight training coaches. Andrews ridiculed him.

I can't believe things had reached that level with Guerrero.

And then Andrews said that when he developed the blood clots in his lungs, Tom Brady took Andrews aside and told him that Alex thought he could help him with that. Blood clots can KILL you. Andrews was like, "Tom, I have dozens of blood clots in my lungs. I could die!"

Holy moly.

And this guy was reinstated?

The LA Raiders, where Guerrero works, must have a massive insurance policy out to protect them against possible malpractice. The team doctors already have it, but Guerrero is not a doctor, so I'm not sure who would insure him.

Well it was from yesterday morning and not today so good work there but yes I listened to it because I listen to 98.5 all the time and to say you’re being a bit hyperbolic about what was said is putting it lightly.

Oh, what did I get wrong?

What was Andrews's reaction when Guerrero told him he would tell the coaches Andrews wasn't going to do squats because it wasn't good for his knee?

Here it is verbatim:

Alex: "I'm going to tell them you don't need to squat."

Andrews: "Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah! NO!!!!!!!! We're not going to do that."

Is that not mockery?

If it's not mockery, why was he talking about taking a hit to the kidney, and when Brady suggested Andrews see Guerrero, Andrews actually said (during the interview) in a deadpan voice: "I didn't." They all laughed hard after he said this.

They were mocking the very idea that #1. Guerrero would recommend to coaches that the players not lift. #2. That he could advise on a shot to the kidneys. #3. Had anything useful to say about blood clots in the lungs.

I see every reason credit the Krafts for having put together the Brady/Belischick duo which was the engine of The Dynasty. I give them credit for in fairly short order seeing the (frankly obvious) error of their ways in hiring The Charming Travel Companion as head coach, for ditching him, and then for putting together with remarkable speed the leadership core of a stunningly quick rebuild to competitive relevance.

We forget that the MAIN responsibility of ownership is to hire the right people to run the team and to detect when a hire was faulty or a longtime coach or other leader is fattering and must be let go. I would put Bill's (eventual) firing in that latter category.

I would criticize the Krafts for, as I have said, stumbling into the Mayo fiasco and, worse, for failing to get rid of Bill when it became obvious, two or three years before he was finally fired, that he was a failed GM and a negligent, self-involved failure as head coach, I would say over the same duration.

Accusations that the Krafts are "cheap" are just childish nonsense, driven in part by the tendency of many to resent the success of their betters.
