NOT splurging at the trade deadline was a MASTERSTROKE!

Wow did you see him do absolutely nothing? That was a masterstroke! Let me glaze just how well he did that nothing!

This is how the post comes off. It's silly.

The real reason the Patriots did nothing is they either couldn't make a deal or they felt the asking prices were too high on the players they wanted. That's the bottom line.

A lot of the potential upgrades available played for the Titans, Jets, and Dolphins. For some reason the Titans don't want to trade with Vrabel and the Jets and Dolphins as division rivals made trading harder.

I still would have liked them to cast their net wider in their search for upgrades because this is a golden chance for the Patriots to improve. This feels like 2001, the AFC is wide open, we might even have a chance at the #1 seed and the Bye and we didn't improve the roster.

Don't get me wrong, we're still in a good position because we have one of the weakest schedules in the NFL. I still feel like we're a playoff lock at this point and will contend against the top teams. But having some extra help at safety, edge, or WR wouldn't have hurt going into the back nine of the season.

"I'll take Vrabel/Chard for $100, Alex."

glad you are fine with them not doing anything...

i would have preferred getting a safety or a running back...

I'll buy in!

Its stuff like this that gets written down in epic poems that last thru the ages like The Charge of the Light Brigade or in movies such as Gallipoli and Zulu ...

hmmm... *scratches head * ... on second thought...

ahhh... **** that ****... You get a chance to get a good player, you do it... you don't have to be stupid about it like the Clots, but you gotta at least try instead of just telling me "well we made a call or two"...

The NFL trade deadline = fool's gold, IMO. For anything making a tangible difference you have to pay a king's ransom. And in that case it must be an ideal fit re. scheme, culture/attitude/buy-in, contract, etc., etc. Young players with upside are basically unobtainable.

At this point in the season, roster holes are best addressed via the 32 practice squads and street FAs. Regarding the Patriots specifically at this stage of the rebuild, building a homegrown foundation via the draft is most important vs. squandering picks on short-term veteran help.

After the last 2 drafts my faith in Eliot Wolf is much better than it used to be, would not expend high value draft capital for a dude you do not know if he will fit into our culture and system.
Quinton WIlliams and Gardner will make the Jets D porous..
Fine with what they did.. and agree that this will help with team building even more.

Pragmatic minds stay the course. Vrabel said for several weeks in a row that if they were going to bring someone in that it would be for the future not as a rental.
Pragmatic (nice word, btw) minds don't overpay... It was worth investigating if the jete would have parted ways with hall or the receiver, I forget his name atm... ymmv

The message sent to the locker room by NOT trading for an expensive "fixer" or two will only further galvanize team unity. It's a ringing endorsement of the Diggs-coined battlecry, "We all we got! We all we need!"

Vrabel knows what he's doing in forging a winning culture for now and the long haul. By contrast, consider the Jete trashing team morale by shipping off their two star defenders while their star running back begged to be traded.

Adding depth wouldn’t affect that. My fear of what can short circuit the season is injuries at any of the positions where depth is shaky.
Every team deals with that but using the trade deadline to grab a vet for depth and rotation is a good safety net.

Maybe it is, but you will never know if you don't even try...

Wasn't it mayo who coined the phrase you used in the op? That turned out well, didn't it?

I don't think Brick & Jack would have traded with the Pats. Just my view of the Talcum Powder Twins.

The jury is still out on Wolf. Out of the 2024 draft class the only player still with the team from that draft is Drake Maye. Every single player after pick #3 was a whiff.

All the Patriots had to do was not miss out on the obvious pick in Maye. In retrospect it would have been a disaster to trade down for McCarthy, a move BB advocated for by the way.

No. The point is they avoided splurging on a "big" signing or two -- via bountiful cap space/owning extra draft picks -- as many fans urged and were expecting. Possessing ample capital they possibly COULD have made headlines a la Indy, Dallas, etc. but chose not to for good reasons.

As you point out the Titans, Jete and Dolphins weren't interested in working with New England. Your idea of casting a "wider net" suggests they didn't do so and other affordable upgrades were left on the table. According to Vrabel in today's presser the team did its due diligence so apparently that wasn't the case.

"We all we got! We all we need!" was coined by Diggs.

All I wanted was for them to not mortgage the future by getting some massive albatross contract. I would have been fine with adding a little depth in some key places, but it takes two to tango.

Rob Ninkovich points out just how important it is to have a great front who can get after the QB or to have a great OL to protect the QB. We have not been getting after the other team's QB all that well NOR protecting Drake Maye very well. What is it a dozen sacks given up in the past 2 games?

"I just don't know why you wouldn't go and use some of your draft equity and get proven quality players. The draft is just a crapshoot on potential." - Rob Ninkovich

Ninkovich appearing on WEEI:

I can accept the Patriots decided not to make trades because they felt the asking price might have been too high.

But maybe they could have looked harder around the league or acted sooner. Was edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, whom the Eagles acquired at the deadline really that big of an overpay for just a 3rd round pick?

I just don't agree to pretend it was some kind of "masterstroke" for the Patriots not to add extra pieces to help them compete and win more.

In my brief time in the car today, it would appear the media's take is going to be that the Pats missed an opportunity to improve the team, and when someone goes down with an eventual injury, they will be tlhere to bring this out again.

Again, something over 90% of the players traded came from 5 teams. The Jets, Dolphins, Titans, Saints, and Browns, and 2 thirds of that market was closed to the Pats limiting their opportunities. There was just one player, some DLman from the Browns that MIGHT have been appropriate to go after, and a million reasons it didn't go down.

I am always amazed how fans get at the various trade deadline deals in all the major sports yet get so disappointed when the deals they do in their heads don't happen, and even MORE amazed how pissed they get when they don't happen just as they dreamed they would. Ahhhh Sports fans, hard to live with them, but you GOT to have 'em

It definitely was not.

I'm not sure who coined it but I remember Seattle used it years ago and I don't think they were first either.

Geez. OK, Diggs brought it to the Patriots. He didn't invent it but "coined" its use in New England. Or whatever. Fair enough? Now go pet a dog, go outside for a walk or something.

To me it's pretty clear that they realized the team has some big holes and they knew they were at least another offseason away. Could we win a Super Bowl this year? Sure, it's possible. It's not very likely and it doesn't make sense to hobble the rebuild by going after a couple of rentals. Slow and steady is what gets us to being a perennial contender.
If there was someone they viewed as a potential Kyle Van Noy or Akeem Ayers, I think giving up one of their four 6s would've been more than OK, even if it was only for half a season.
