Well that truly sucks. Now they have a chance to improve…. Booooooo!

Is Chris Grier really the one to blame? They have talent. He did pull off a brilliant trade with the 49ers that did get them Hill, Waddle, and Chubb in return for the third overall pick. I don't think he is the greatest GM, but I would put him behind Tua and McDaniel in the blame pie.
mcdaniel is a good coach. nobody should be able to be dolphins GM for 9 years with really no results to show for it

He’s a good coordinator. I’m not sure he’s really cut out to be a HC.

Yet for a franchise overall a 'middling' QB is more often than not the kiss of death

Yep, they take up nearly as much cap space as elite QBs, but don't make up for it by elevating the players around them.

It's always a bind for a team when a QB like that comes up for a new contract. I remember talking about it back when Tony Romo signed a monster extension with the Cowboys. He was a better than average starter and his teams reliably put up winning records, so their chances of signing or drafting somebody better were very low. Yet they were never going to win a Superbowl with him.

As a HC I've heard it said he cuts a really sick line

I've said this before. The only way that scenario works out well is when you have a really elite defense.

Best chances for success are to have a truly elite QB on a rookie contract.

Dolphins needed a scapegoat, although Chris Grier played his part. More heads will roll soon.

Grier drafted some nice players from 2016-2019 in Howard, Tunsil, Fitzpatrick, Baker, Van Genkel and Wilkins who came on later. However, their fatal mistake was passing on Justin Herbert for Hawk Tua. After 2021 was when the problems really started when McDaniel was the HC. Specifically, there was a philosophy problem and I've been saying for years that team was poorly built on offense and bad defense. Hill and Waddle are fantastic combo, but competent defenses can slow them down because they don't have a running game that scares anybody and no middle of the field enforcers. McDaniel is a talented offensive mind, but he is much like coach Red Beaulieu from "The Waterboy" who runs out of ideas when his initial attack is stopped. Each year he's been a HC, his offenses have run into these issues later in the season.

A middling QB with a big contract is the real problem. Those guys need to be carried by their teammates, so you need more cap space to get those guys.

Indy and Seattle are doing well with their middling QBs. They have contracts commensurate with their performance. The problem is the Daniel Jones contract with the Giants, or Tua’s contract, or potentially Purdy’s contract but every mistake the 49ers make seems to be offset by a major find….

did he underachieve with tua? made the playoffs twice with a mid QB

Grier gave Tua that dumb extension for $214M last year. Absolutely horrific contract. I was watching the game last night and he's about as limited a QB as there is in the NFL.

I remember when some mediots were claiming the Pats should trade Mac Jones after his rookie year because the Pats wouldn't be willing to give him top-tier $$$.

They were right, though for the wrong reason. (The bigger question was finding a new and better QB.)

Somebody had to walk the plank for that debacle last night. Dollyfins are on the hook for too much for it to be Tua, McDaniel will help them secure the best possible draft pick and Stephen Ross isn't about to fire himself so Grier it is.

On another note, I'd just like to say how great it is to once again be at the top of the division watching our wannabe rivals implode.
Well then, the biggest blame should be McDaniel because he's the one that created the innovative offensive system that allowed Tua to look like the real deal and actually earn that big contract. And then be blamed for not being able to elevate his coaching game to be able to run a TOTAL organization and team, much like our own much beloved OC.

Grier did some good things down there, but not recently enough to save his job. Bottom line, this opens the gate for there to be a mass exodus out of Miami. You can hire the best guy when they see a lot of draft assets high picks, free reign, and living in Miami. That make Miami a premium GM job and they will like get first pick at the top candidates. They trade a minimum of 3 guys between Monday and Tuesday. Miami is a tank job happening.

The thing is, the guys you're putting him behind in the blame pie are the QB that HE picked and extended and the coach that HE hired. At the end of the day, those two individuals ultimately are there because of him. So if you think they’re the problem and get rid of them but keep Grier, you’re saying he made bad choices in those key spots last time but you’re trusting him to make those decisions again.

In many ways the Pats were lucky that Mac was so bad that moving on was the only option.

Line talent is included in the equation, Grier didn’t think line play mattered much… which is why the Dolphins were paper tigers… soft.

Trading away five draft picks and making Tyreek Hill the highest paid WR in the NFL is also a poor way to acquire talent.

It was reported Bill wanted to trade Mac in year two… in hindsight that would’ve been really smart.

The QB gets all the credit for success and none of the blame. Don’t you know the rules?

Any credible coach that could turn the Fins around will want GM control - Ross knows this. He may even have someone in mind.

But this telegraphs to any such potential coaches that they will be the de facto GM
