Miles Garrett is a legit possibility

That's what extension means. HOWEVER, there would be some obscene signing bonus of something like $40-50MM that he'd collect right away, so he wouldn't need to borrow his lunch money.
but thats the thing
they could extend him and give him an obscene bonus, and extend it over 5 years
his early years would have low cap numbers

I don't believe this will happen, and I'm not a fan of giving up two firsts. However, if you look at it from this perspective it does change the context. Looking at the next draft, and its strengths and weaknesses there is a good chance that they will use a first round pick for an Edge rusher. In that light the idea of using two firsts for the best edge rusher in football, and as Tommy has said a sure fire 1st ballot HOF player then the price doesn't seem that bad.
sure. but on Oct 30th, no one knows who is picking where
and it appears the Pats could be a playoff team.

Would you trade 2 firsts and a player to Cleveland for Garrett? He could help take you on a playoff run THIS YEAR while also giving you a scary as hell DL for the next 3+ years.
I wouldn’t do 2 firsts ….maybe one…

There is a very good chance we are picking in the 20s, maybe even late 20s. With Garrett it could in the 30s. When you consider where we may be picking the next drafts, 2 1sts is not too much to give up.

Halloween would be a great day to pull the trigger on a trade for Garrett

They're spending $40 mil a season on this guy and don't even have a QB. Between that and what they are paying Watson not to pay, that's a good chunk of owners money and cap space committed to NOT being a contender for the next few years.

That's a big contract for the Pats to take on, but they can actually afford it while Maye is on his rookie contract

They may theoretically be able take on that hit and sign Maye to a monster contract extension, but then this leaves zero room for errors on roster management be it FA signings, trades, etc. The eligibility window to sign Maye to an extension opens in summer of 2027 and assuming his AAV is north of $50m the Patriots would have to front-end Garrett's new contract as much as possible to reduce the hit before the Patriots break the bank for Maye.

And Gonzo is going to want his $$$.

It will all result in backloaded years that will pile up pretty quickly and result in accelerated dead money which will severely restrict spending in the years ahead that's intended to manage roster churn.

I'm all set with the crazy scenarios, but sure, have at it!

And really, this is Reggie White to the Packers, or maybe Charles Haley to the Cowboys depending on how highly you think about Charles Haley (I'm biased because he was JMU).

I'm sort of splitting hairs at this point. But even in the Hall of Fame there are levels. Von Miller, to me, is a Hall of Famer. Reggie White is an all-timer, up there with Lawrence Taylor and Bruce Smith.

Micah Parsons/Maxx Crosby, hall of famers. Myles Garrett, all-timer.

One of my wife's nephews went to JMU, Class of 2021; and one of my cousins went there too - all the way from the West Coast, at that - about 30 years earlier... Go Dukes!

Is that really enticing to the browns?

Barmore and a first rounder for Garrett seems fair

I suspect Vrabel wants to get rid of Barmore
Since you’re a Doctor, what’s your opinion on the chances Barmore has blood clots again?

This might be something that Pats consider if they don’t want to part with multiple 1st rounders or have too much money tied up on the D-line.

BTW- I think this thread has run its course. Cleveland said they aren't going to trade him so it's moot. I posted this because I thought it COULD happen, and perhaps SHOULD happen, but it isn't going to happen. Time to move on and concentrate our discussions on other possible trades and the upcoming game.
No, I don't think I will. You got me all wound up thinking we had a chance at him. This is your bed, now we gotta lay in it.

Well, not me and you. I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just you. You sit here and listen to 10 more pages of this.

Anyway

It depends on underlying cause, but if its genetic there is a decent chance for recurrence in which case he might need long term blood thinners ( not compatible with football)

Don’t they have mirrors in Cleveland?

The only consideration to his age at this point is that he's not 35.

He's right in the middle of his prime, and he's going to be able to come into a situation where he can be rotated with other good players.

Again, like I said, this isn't just 2nd/3rd tier Vet Pass Rusher like Trey Hendrickson who's already 31.

This is a guy who got 5 sacks in a game *4 days ago*.
Very true. I'd just feel more comfortable if he was 25 or 26.. for the long term.. as yes he's in his prime at 29..

I catch a couple JMU games every year. My contractor that does work for my company has a box suite. The stadium is awesome and its free food and drinks. I really enjoy catching their games and its only about 40 minute drive from my home

Sidenote....WR Elijah Sarratt played for JMU in 2023 and he is a stud. When coach Cignetti left JMU for Indiana Sarratt and many others followed (but the current JMU program is still strong). Sarratt will be in the draft next year and he is someone to keep an eye on.
