Will Campbell Watch

Campbell has silenced all those on here that said he needs to play guard. But mark my words if he has one bad game this year all the hats get hung on that game and the I told you so comments will be everywhere.

I had some doubts about LT being Campbell's best position. Thrilled with how he is doing so far.

VERY few teams have a top QB and a true stud LT at the same time. It's almost unheard of these days. To be in the position of possibly having both for the next decade would really be remarkable.

Carter had nine pressures today, joint for best amongst all pass rushers. I'm very happy with Campbell but the other two were clearly better prospects.
Playing Devil’s advocate, Carter is having an excellent season, and looks like a difference maker.
Nah, he’s not that guy right now and we'd be fuming if this was his production going into week 5. The “pressures” stat is a really bad one and we need to remove it from our vocabulary. It is subjective and has been in vogue since PFF was pushed down our throats after Chris Collinsworth bought majority shares and featured it on SNF. They have done a very good job of gaslighting fans into thinking players on their team or around the NFL are better than they really are. You can't can't play 70% of the total teams snaps, have that many "pressures", but only have .5 sacks after 4 games. This is gaslighting 101. What they need to do is give context to the "pressure". Did it result in a positive or negative play?

What Campbell is doing right now is way more valuable than what Carter is doing.

What's hilarious about that is that 1/3 of an inch is less than the last knuckle on your pinky finger and the end of it, yet they argued non stop that it was a massive difference, and that they could tell from looking at him that his arms were 1:3 of an inch too short. Anyone who made that argument should look at their pinky finger, and the distance between the last knuckle on it and the end of it, then ask themselves if they want to reconsider their original take?
Getting real tired of people confusing arm length with wingspan. Yeah he has arms 1/8 of an inch shorter then ideal. I said pre draft wgaf non issue. What I brought up and had a monster thread over was the 3-7 inches of wingspan he gives up to other starting LTs. I'll say he has been better then I thought he'd be and thus far hasn't been taken advantage of by counter moves. That was my only concern in why I thought he will never be a truly elite top 5 at his position player. It's early but everything else I said multiple times, great worker, incredible athlete, smart and will make the rest of the line better, has been exactly as advertised. I'm very pleased with our draft and wouldn't change a thing and Campbell is a big part of that. The line has been good this year and the difference from historically awful last year is vast and noteworthy.

Crediting or discrediting a pressure if the play is positive or negative seems silly. If you beat the OT and force the QB to throw early that's a good thing. Ty Law's pick 6 against the Rams... Vrabel caused that with pressure on Warner. If Ty Law falls down and Bruce catches it now all of a sudden that's not a good play by Vrabel anymore? That's absolute nonsense. That's like saying if the outside CB on the left covered his man he didn't actually do well because the slot CB on the right got beat for a TD.

All any player can ever do on any play is take care of their own individual responsibility. PFF is far from perfect but pressuring the QB is a fairly straightforward concept. There's of course some subjectivity to it, but anyone with even a basic understanding of football can look at a pass rusher and decide if he got a good rush on the QB and any pass rusher who's consistently getting pressure on the QB is contributing well in their individual role.

So does anyone still think he should switch to LG?

I can’t see the team doing that anyway unless there are elite LT prospects declaring for next April with a ceiling higher than WC and I’m not aware of any.

Ersery has solidified the LT spot in Houston too. Just sayin lol

Many of them actually want him to have a bad game so they can toot their own horn about how right they were.

Scourton used to eat his lunch at A&M.
Campbell's getting better, he's improving. That should terrify the rest of the league.

Campbell only allowed 5 sacks over 3 years at LSU, and he averaged 1 pressure a game, so it's really hard to see how anyone " ate his lunch." While he was at LSU. Scourton got a ton of publicity for a spin move he put on Campbell but he didn't put up any significant number of sacks or pressures against him, and that's what tackles are measured on.

Adding this week to Campbell’s rookie resume

On the season:

1 Sack, 2 Hits, 5 hurries on 159 snaps

Projected based on 31 pass attempts per game and no improvement. Total 527:
3-4 sacks, 6-7 hits, 16-17 pressures.

Compare that to Lowe last year:
5 sacks, 5 hits, 33 pressures on 501 pass attempts.

Definitely trending in the right direction

But, but, but with those "alligator arms" he is not worth such a high draft pick, Campbell is an overreach.
Or so they say on sportstalk radio..

Lowes bigger issue was that he was a really bad run blocker where Campbell is pretty dominate there.
Lowe was adequate in Pass Pro.
PFF is kind of all over the place in accuracy but they had 66.9 Pass Block and 45.8 Run block
PFF run block grading on Campbell is too low, He was dominate vs Miami and they gave him a 50. That's a joke as is the Pitt run block grade. He has 3 games in 4 with over 70 Pass Block, Lowe had 5 in 14 games last year.

Campbell is a huge upgrade; it is night and day in run blocking. Like all pro vs practice squad level of difference in run blocking.

KCSVEN, what is your verdict on the run blocking overall?

To my eyes, they've fixed the worst weaknesses of the O-line and are keeping Maye protected, which is absolutely the number one priority, but the run blocking doesn't look good. Onwenu seems sluggish to me. But I'm impressed by the tight ends!

It's tough to answer because overall they've been below average, but the first 2 games were bad to below average and last 2 overall above average. Josh is also getting creative in the run game which has helped things.

They were Bad vs Raiders, outside of Campbell, Mixed but more on the bad side vs Dolphins but solid to good vs Steelers but really good vs Panthers. The trendline is definitely up on the run blocking. Are they getting better or are they facing bad Run defenses?

The last game I thought Onwenu had his best game of the year so maybe he's finally in shape. He's always looked sluggish, he's power over speed, guys like Wilson and Campbell are more athletic but as a guard Onwenu's strength is more important.

I thought Brown was a drop off from Wilson in the run game but Wilson struggled in game 1, was ok in game 2 and really good in game 3. Is he game 3 Wilson or Game 1-2 Wilson?

Campbell, to me, is pretty damn good run blocker, best on the team and better than anyone last year by quite a bit, that alone makes the run blocking much better. Moses has been solid, he's not spectacular but he doesn't hurt you much where Jacobs was probably the worst tackle in the NFL so big upgrades at both tackle spots.

Bradbury has limits, he's not moving guys off the ball but he's playing about as well as he can which, at best, is an average run blocker.

They have the makings of a solid run blocking line. Really comes down to Wilson's development because Campbell is great at it, if Wilson can play like he did in game 3 regularly it would be huge. Middle of the pack overall is the upside but pretty good since they are running top 10 in pass protection.

Couple plays where it is hard to judge run blocking:

1-Mack Hollins, as much as I think he's not a great receiver, is an excellent run blocking WR. Though he also whiffed on a block vs Panthers where Drake moved him onto the DB at the line and then he just let the DB run by him for the tackle because he took a bad angle. On the play Onwenu's guy got in on the tackle, but Onwenu dominated the rep and moved his guy out of the hole, Hollins guy forced Rham away from the hole. Many people would rate that a loss for Onwenu because his guy was in on the tackle.

2-First run play in the 3rd Q. Onwenu has a guy across from him, he pushes him toward the center and picks up the blitzing LB that showed the blitz just before the snap. Bradbury hikes it and for some reason goes forward and left 2 steps. He looks like he's triple teaming the guy in front of Brown which Campbell is double teaming. I THINK he was just chipping and going after the DB at the second level, but he stumbled so never got him. The guy Onwenu let go was in free and clear one on one vs Rham, who made him miss and got 5 yards. He then had to make the DB miss that Bradbury never blocked and then ran inside the Onwenu block.

I'm sure many gave Onwenu a whiff on that block that put his guy 1 on 1 with Rham in the backfield but it was Bradbury that should have taken the hand off of his guy, bad read by him. Bradbury then did nothing on the play, at all to help.

Just an example of how hard it is to diagnose a play and why PFF is so wrong so often.
