NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 1: Other Games

Can someone explain to me why Bears fans all over social media are *****ing about penalties the Bears clearly committed that they claim are bogus calls.

Sure the receiver slipped, but the defender mauled him after that. Textbook PI.

The second the tackle lays on top of the defender, it is holding. It wasn't a pancake block. The tackle dove onto of the defender after he fell to the ground. That is going to get called every time.

Looked like the last little push hit the defender in the chin,

Some of JJs throws were into tight windows.

IIRC, his 2 pt conversion was a bullet into single tight coverage.

That was 1 of the 2-3 plays I mentioned but do NOT see a tight window, he had clear view of JJ, who had a step on 1 defender

Not sure how much of the problems Sunday were because of our OL/RBs/TEs/WRs as they were our OC/QB...
In the NFL there is a small room for error. It's a little bit of everything. Lost in all this is after the first throw to Douglas that missed, Maye was nearly perfect in the 1st half, yet they only scored 10 points. Why?

-The Douglas miss ended that drive.
-2nd and 12 from LV 17 ball is batted down at line, Henry was completely mugged out in the open, complained to ref for holding no call. They then get a false start, 3rd and 17 screen to nowhere.
-4 minutes left in 2Q, 1st and 10 at LV 25, bad play call screen pass to DD, loses 4 yards. Run for 5, 3rd and 9 and completed short of sticks
-Get ball back again before half and can't get a 3rd and 1, can we not learn the tush push. Onwenu gets beat to inside causing Rham to have to cut back to the unblocked LB. Bradbury just missed everyone and falls down. Despite the fact Campbell pancaked his guy at point of attack was meaningless due to Bradbury/Onwenu.

First half he drive killers were
-1 miss by Maye
-a missed call by the refs coupled with a false start
-Bad play call to start a series
-Bad blocking on 3rd and 1
-Missed field goal
-Overall inability to run the ball failed to set up any 2nd and short.

They should have had 13 points which is 26 for a game, fine overall score but 3 drives ended by bad execution or bad play calling and 1 was a ref's missed call but followed by a bad timing false start. They tacked on the missed field goal to 1 of those drives to double up the mistakes.

Granted they ended up losing the game in 2nd half but was also a mixed bag of blame. Maye killed 2 drives but coaching, wr, running game, and Rhams poor chipping/pass blocking killed the others.

Ahhh, JJ threw the ball between 2 Defenders.

Watch the video and stop and start it through the entire catch. Furthermore, why would the Bears not double the Vikes best WR?

Come on, He 100% did NOT throw it between 2 defenders, watch the all-22 view.
He threw it in front of 1 defender the other guy was covering someone else and was 5 yards from JJ and not remotely in the play at all.

He also had the cleanest pocket of all time. He threw a 22 yard pass to a receiver with no defenders between him and receiver, a beautiful throwing lane and receiver had a yard to a yard and a half separation on nearest defender. Nice throw, but not a high level of difficulty, the more I watch it the more routine it looks.

Just curious why you think that screen pass was such a bad call? And not execution.

When you're not running much a screen pass on first down deep in your own territory seems pretty reasonable to me.

Also I don't know if it needs to be a tush push but they absolutely need to figure out how Maye can contribute to these very short yardage situations. Given his athleticism he should be a weapon and thus far neither coaching staff has come up with anything for him. Is he still not comfortable under center or something?

Obviously it's only one game for Josh and they did have that one fake where Henderson took it outside instead (I have to imagine there's other looks to that package and some must include Maye).

Stop coddling him so much.

IMO for the defense they were in it was not the right call. I don't know if Maye can check out of that or not.

They only had 1 defender in a press type coverage on 2 receivers. The rest looked like zone, that play is a good man beater but not a good zone beater, the LB had complete free run to Douglas.
In addition, the Safety was unblocked, granted he would have had a few yards before the safety got there but basically you had 3 guys going for the tackle and 1 blocker. Even the other inside LB was unblocked headed that way leaving it so you could ONLY run outside to the sidelines, but Boutte was lined up to block the DB from the inside.
Ideally you have man coverage, the receiver would be quick enough to get past one of them as the guy blocking takes the other one.

I guess the call itself in that part of the field and down and distance is not inherently bad, just bad vs the defense the Raiders had, which was kind of what they were playing for defense at that point. Play had zero chance of working, maybe later in the season Maye can check to a different play or know enough to call TO.
Play just had little chance of working, unless POP caught it and broke 4 tackles instead of just the 2.
I think my man Chism would have broken 4 tackles but, Alas, he remains on the bench.

Interesting and thanks for the breakdown. I remember when the play happened from the stands I wondered if a lineman was supposed to pull out or something because the numbers definitely didn't seem in our favor.

I'm not sure what he's allowed to do as far as checking out. And obviously there's a learning curve and we just have to trust the coaches to give him these responsibilities when they feel he's ready.

But I'd file this under more coddling too. I mean how's he supposed to know what to do in that situation if you're not giving him the opportunity to do anything. Let him check out and then go over the logic as to why and what he changed and make corrections.

They seem to be holding him back from scrambling. They absolutely have done nothing to utilize his size and athleticism in short yardage situations. And now this too. These are some pretty big tools for a QB and it feels equally neglectful not to enable this as it would be to put too much on his plate too soon.

I mean he's not a rookie anymore time to take off the training wheels. And yes it's week 1 and not entirely fair to put all that on Josh either but if this coddling continues all year then the concerns will rise.

I don't think the Ravens are going to recover from that loss. This was one of the most pathetic losses I've ever seen. If it were the playoffs, Harbaugh would've been fired. I think this is his last year if they don't get to the AFCCG.

Might just be bad play design.
I don't really get how the play is supposed to work with Boutte blocking from inside to the sidelines and nobody blocking the LB. Seems the only way it works is for DD to go outside with ball and Boutte then had to block from the sidelines in but they didn't line up that way.

I just went back and watched Washington run a similar play last year. They had the TE go in motion, block the DB and the WR then was on the LB. They both completely whiffed on the blocks and lost yards, but the design was logical.

If someone was supposed to motion over there instead of a linemen pulling that would make sense.

Too tired to go over 52 pages and trying to catch up with week 1 highlights , so apologies if Keon Coleman of the Bills has been mentioned already , he had a pretty good game against the Ravens

#29 was in front of Jefferson and he turned back as Jefferson was making the reception. He was within arms reach.

5 yards is 15 feet. There is no way that's true.
