The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

Bill is not the cultural icon Jordan is.

Jordan didn't embarrass himself with the Wizards. Also winning was secondary to Jordan back then compared to proving he could still play. So I would say no it doesn't devalue it all that much.
Statements like these make me laugh.....prove he can still play. I think that's what Bill is doing too trying to prove he can still coach. As a coach you have to win to prove that. I don't recall Michaels stats his last year but to use that as a crutch to invalidate Condon's point seems disingenuous coaches don't really have stats. If Jordans stats were better with the Wiz then maybe he's not the best example but plenty of greats hung on past their shelf life it doesn't eliminate their prime which was Condon's point.

Meanwhile in Bunnyville, the party became a funeral:

CHAPEL Hill, N.C. -- Looking back, the optimism that swept North Carolina's campus before Monday's game felt like the carefree high point of a horror film -- the moment when the main character thinks everything is perfect, unaware the killer is already in the room.

Tar Heel fans, desperate to rise above their mostly irrelevant place in college football, poured into Kenan Stadium believing the Bill Belichick era might finally change their story. A perfect opening drive only added to the frenzy. And then the TCU Horned Frogs crept out of the shadows with a knife.

By midway through the third quarter, the sellout crowd sounded more like Sunday Church than primetime football. It couldn't have been more than 30% full. There are bad outcomes and then there is what happened here last night, where every doubter of the Belichick experiment -- and there are plenty of them, many who work in college football -- was given a truck full of ammunition to bolster their arguments after the 48-14 disastrous debut to the Chapel Bill era.

Saban went to Alabama at his peak while Belichick is making the move to UNC when we all know he has lost his fastball.

Do you devalue Jordan's GOAT status because of his run with the Wizards?

How I see Belichick isn’t going to be his issue, his legacy in New England will always have me seeing him as the GOAT. His issue is going to be with all those who aren’t Patriots fans.

I was watching Albert Breer this morning and he mentioned Belichick’s depth chart that he handed in was left blank. The depth chart is used by the media and for NFL scouts to identify players. Breer said that at Alabama Saban would roll out the red carpet for the scouts because he knew how much it meant for the players trying to make the NFL and in turn would help Alabama get top end talent. Compare that to Belichick who just turned in a blank depth chart.

Something like that seems minute but also because of his age he doesn't have a lot of time to learn these lessons. And a ton of small things can start adding up quickly. Ultimately it's about winning but small things can't be ignored.

This seems like something he didn't have to care about in the pros and would be easy for him to miss and just do things like he did in the pros. But I'm sure there plenty of little things like this existed in the pros too so I'd say it's worth noting but not really worth criticism yet.

This is what coasting on your reputation looks like.

Same for the poor recruiting.

It's pretty clear that Bill needs to really up his game if he wants to turn around that program.

It's hard to see how a 73 year old guy with a lot of distractions in his life does that.

It all feeds into each other. You need to win. You need high quality recruits to win. You need to show that you can give high quality recruits the absolute best showcase at possible opportunity.

Hopefully he is flexible and doesn't dig in on this. Because yes to him this is all about winning, to them it's a stepping stone to the pros

His flexibility both based on his success and age was certainly one of the more debated aspects of his switch to college and if he wasn't prepared to embrace and figure out those sorts of things he probably shouldn't have tried. I know he comes off as hard ass and rigid but through the years he's actually embraced a lot of changes. He pretty much let all his coordinators change things to their liking so long as they stayed within the overall schemes and things morphed a lot through the years. He also adapted to all sorts of forced changes like things based on rules for example.

Again I'm not ignoring he's at a different point in his life and career but I think he knows he can't just be stubborn and I assume he took on a challenge like this ready and willing to learn but I know that's tough for the haters to believe to them he's just an old man past his expiration.

He's got his detractors and people who want to devalue his accomplishments even before going to UNC.

Jordan, as impeccable as his resume is, is under attack by Bron fans who downplay his accomplishments to prop up their guy.

GOAT debates are subjective ultimately. I think Tiger is the GOAT but if someone says it's Jack, then I'm not going to argue because it's their opinion.

UNC's CFP hopes died on opening night. 2026 schedule is going to be much harder. Does Bill pull a Peyton and be one and done?

I think he's going to need to be fired or health otherwise I think he's addicted to ball. I don't think you end up at UNC otherwise.

If Bill quits on UNC, then he will completely obliterate what little shred of dignity he has left which he is desperately clinging on to.

And I tell you this... if Bill ****ies out and quits after 1 season, UNC ain't gonna just happily transition over to his son(s). Those *****es are fired.

You guys like to act like he's been washed up since 2015 or whatever year you each settle on. But if Bill decides it's over and retired then that makes him some sort of undignified quitter?

Anyways I'm pretty sure he's too addicted and that's not happening. But yes if he retired I doubt any succession plans would move forward those would likely be in place for when success occurs if they even really exist they certainly would be for the schools benefit or mutual. I doubt the options are solely on the Belichick side.

Already a QB controversy in Chapel Bill. Guess he didn't learn about the last one he created. That didn't end well.

I think those of us in the know have all settled on 2020.

That was the year he got rid of the greatest quarterback of all time with absolutely no succession plan in place because he arrogantly thought he was so great at coaching that QBs were just interchangeable parts.
But if Bill decides it's over and retired then that makes him some sort of undignified quitter?
"Undignified quitter" would be generous. If he signs a 5 year deal - which he did - and quits after one year because it was harder than he thought it would be, he would be making a complete jackass of himself and lose whatever shred of dignity he has left.

Retired would be the word most would use in this scenario and again I ask if you're the genius in the know who states it was over in 2020 why does that make him an ******* if he were to come to that conclusion in 2026?

I'm going to clue you on something but that doesn't actually help your Bill was just along for a ride stance you don't want history to show he was washed up you want him to prove that he very much still has a full tank but just can't do it without Tom.

I don't know exactly what that entails especially at a college but if he was washed up in 2020 then holding anything after that is kind of pointless. You should have wished he got hired to another NFL team that had a good QB and then couldn't win everything else is going to be up to interpretation.

What part of "if he takes a 5 year deal and then quits after one year because it was harder than he thought it would be" did you not understand??

He can't do it as a HC without Tom. And everyone here on this forum - except you - knows it.

There is no interpretation. He is being laughed at nationally. His legacy will be that he couldn't do a darn thing as an HC without Tom Brady.
