Patriots Player Departure Jabrill Peppers Released (Update: Signs w/Steelers)

Vrabel obviously hates Michigan players.
Backside of his career.

Another police report bound to happen.

*****ing in the locker room.

STIs suddenly going down in SE Massachusetts like crime in DC. Wonder why that is?

Joe Milton is a Coast Guard Academy cadet compared to Mr "We are Ass" Peppers.

I think Vrabel is just trying to smoke out the rat and Pepper is in on it!

While Belichick did get rid of a few players from the Carroll regime, like Spires, Milloy and Woody, he did not get rid of the entire crew just because they were unsuccessful. Ty Law, Bruschi, McGinest, Faulk, to name 4, were still around.

Not sure I buy this idea that Vrabel is cutting the players who have been around 2 years of losing.

It has to be scheme fit.

I expect there is more to this, and we are going to hear about another off the field issue.
Yup my first thought was oh-oh what happened, someone in the press will find out.

... which was only discovered after the pre-season games.

Why did he not figure that out before Tuesday at 4 pm?

I’ll guess that the Patriots were actively shopping both Dugger and Peppers and just got no response.
Dugger and Peppers are duplicates - not the best fit, and only want one in that role. Dugger costs money to release.
So with no trade opportunity they released him.

I don’t love it. At this point who is available to fill the slot that makes the team better than Peppers?

Releasing a vet instead of trading him is a locker-room thing - the players understand that they will be treated with respect at the end of the day. Being released gives him the choice of where he ends up.

Could just be the scheme fit and he wasn't happy with a reduced role.

Can we stop the run with light fast linebackers and fewer thumper-type safeties?

The Titans defenses did not all rank as good as you would think. They could be inconsistent.
Yeah this was always the biggest question mark around Vrabel, defensive guy who had an offensively driven team where others were clearly more involved. At face value you would think he constantly had solid defenses, but it was more of a skill position driven team

I agree that probably Peppers expressed disagreement and lack of enthusiasm with Vrabel’s planned scheme when they discussed it. Vrabel probably said “my way or the highway”
Simple as that

Maybe Duggar, Bentley, Peppers, White and other former Bill players have been spreading negative vibes and Vrabel had enough.

I know just speculation….

Duggar will play starter snaps. If we try to play Woodson and Hawkins ad the starting safeties we are going to get lit up.
Why do you think that?

Dugger, Hawkins, Woodson, Mapu and Pettus.

In the end, Vrabel chose Dugger over Peppers.

Just perhaps, the starters are Dugger and Woodson. Or Hakims until Woodson is ready to start.
I think it will be Woodson, Hawkins on early downs, and Woodson, Mapu on later downs.

We had Chung for years as the strong safety and he was excellent at covering the TE, so he was versatile. Peppers, Pettus and Duggar are not great at covering the TE or the RB. Mapu is a better cover LB/Safety than Hawkins, but worse in the open field. Mapu is great if he has a fixed assignment (like cover the TE or the RB) or is rushing forward for a tackle. Hawkins is much better in space (which means he can adjust for the run and pass which fools the opposition). Dugger and Peppers are basically run guys that are not great in space or as cover LBs, so the opposing offense goes to the pass with Peppers or Dugger on the field.

Peppers is violent, but a bit small to be a Vrabel LB. That is why the Giants picked Peppers in the 1at round and then let him walk. Peppers is not a cover guy, so he is limited. I thought Peppers was violent and strong enough that Vrabel would fit him in, but it appears as though when Peppers learned Hawkins was starting over him that he requested to be released.

Schefter is incorrect about the guaranteed money. Peppers only had 2.5M remaining. Not 4.32M.
The Pats will have 4M in dead cap this year and 3M next year. Minus any money Peppers gets with a new team.

This has Lawyer Milloy vibes.
If only we had just signed Rodney Harrison vibes now like we did then.

As Sam said why wouldn’t he have done that on Tuesday. Reminds me of the early 2000’s.

I've seen Mapu suggested a lot but I thought he got moved to LB?

Not that we can't move him back but he seemingly made the team as a backer and we aren't exactly deep there either.

I agree that it has to be scheme related and/or some other off field thing. I did not pay much attention to the 2ndary in the preseason and I do not have access to all 22 but I would guess that they want both safeties to play in a CF type role (meaning they can cover a lot of ground).

Duggar and Peppers are not those guys at this point in their careers.
