Patriots Player Departure Jabrill Peppers Released (Update: Signs w/Steelers)

Peppers release gives some perspective to a conversation the McCourty twins and Zolak had during the Commanders’ game broadcast about Peppers playing in the “slot”. That’s not something I thought Peppers would be good at, so I really didn’t understand what they were talking about at the time.

The running game is making a comeback. The best offenses last season featured it significantly. One reason teams are featuring it more is that defenses, such as the Pats especially, have been so fast to get out of thei base defense to play nickel alignments to cover all the 11 personnel teams face.

I think the Patriots want to play a higher percentage of base Defense on early downs to better play the run. To do that, you need safeties on the field who can play the deep middle, cover ground in zone, and man up on the 3rd receiver. That’s not Dugger’s or Peppers’ game. Hopefully, the coaches are correct in their assessment that Woodson and Hawkins are what they’re looking for.

That’s why my first thought was another off field incident.
maybe your first thought, but Giardi is reporting there was no off-field issues. Which makes sense cause Peppers has always been a stand up guy, and the incident last year was bs and he was cleared.

I think they were putting together the game plan and maybe Peppers didn't have a big role and that led to a conversation where he got released. Which is poor communication and planning given that cut down day was days ago.

Smaller and faster isn't a bad thing.
Nope, wasn't claiming it wasn't. Just trying to see how the scheme works as opposed to how Bill's scheme worked. I just don't know a ton about Vrabel's scheme.

That actually is a shock, at least to me it is.

Me too.. Despite having said I thought they'd trade him because of his issues.

Something must have happened between Peppers and either Williams or Vrabel that they just couldn't get past.

Or they needed the roster slot?

What the.

Schefter is incorrect about the guaranteed money. Peppers only had 2.5M remaining. Not 4.32M.
The Pats will have 4M in dead cap this year and 3M next year. Minus any money Peppers gets with a new team.

This has Lawyer Milloy vibes.

Odd timing if it’s scheme. Could be more.

He was already in legal hot water. Clearly not the best off field situation.

The issues with the assault were cleared. One has to wonder if the coke he had on him became an issue..

Anyone downplaying this is coping so hard. Peppers was one of the Patriots' best players. One of the worst rosters in the NFL just got worse.
Then leave. Seriously.. Blathering like yours is ridiculous. No one is keeping you here. Go root for the Raiders or just stop watching all together.

I expect there is more to this, and we are going to hear about another off the field issue.

Right now @Joey007 ‘s theory makes the most sense to me. It’s scheme, they just recently told him that he wouldn’t be playing as much because of it, and unlike Dugger, he threw a fit. I’m being loose with that expression, but generally meaning that they thought Peppers would be a locker room problem if he was sitting on the bench much of the time, and that’s especially a problem for someone who was a team captain last year.

Probably who they already have. Problem is that Gonzalez has a nagging hamstring, Davis has a history of injuries and we just tried to get rid of our other starting safety.

Our secondary which I thought was pretty good isn’t looking as solid given the circumstances. Guys are gonna have to step up.
Dugger is no longer a "starting safety". That's Hawkins and Woodson. As mentioned.

Dugger is still recovering from the ankle issue (per Vrabel). The Trade talk was an attempt to get him to a better situation.

My biggest beef with Dugger is that he never made the jump to being a field general. Woodson is that, supposedly an has picked up the defense.

I had mentioned that I thought Peppers might be on the chopping block early on because of his issues and the fact that he like to free lance.

The only logical explanation that I can see is that Vrabel came to the conclusion that Hawkins and Woodson where more suited to his scheme. That in the end Dugger accepted his role as a backup. He continued to grind, played to end of the Vikings game and again against the Giants without complaining.

I think the simple explanation is that Peppers didn’t take well being demoted and Vrabel didn’t like that attitude.

Duggar will play starter snaps. If we try to play Woodson and Hawkins ad the starting safeties we are going to get lit up.
