Do most teams have 2 QB's or 3 QB's on their 53?

The emergency QB designation is useless unless you have 3 QB's on the 53.

Think we can and should upgrade number 2 I get not wanting Maye to feel heat from competition but we need a capable backup has to be a balance.

We will add a 3rd QB to the practice squad... maybe it will be Ben Wooldridge, maybe someone else...

Isn’t Stidham #3 in Denver? He had a great preseason, better than our #2 and3. Wonder if he would be available a late round pick or worth a look if released.

He is listed as the 2nd QB on the donks depth chart

I agree. I don't get the not wanting Maye to feel the heat from competition. Since you get it, can you please explain it?
They are concentrating on making Maye. A captain a alpha a leader, Vrabel talked about it enough times that it’s a point of emphasis and important to him that Maye can lead.

If another young gun slinging QB makes some strides some nice plays they don’t want the foxboro faithful yelling for Will Howard when Maye makes a mistake.

But a Jouneyman QB Career backup who feels more like a Caddy to Maye than someone gunning for his spot, let’s Maye focus on learning the offense and not losing confidence when he makes mistakes and have doubt creep in.

I think this was a internal conversation ok what ruined Mac Jones, the lack of support, the lack of talent around him and him constantly looking over his shoulder for Zappe.

I'm biased by his first name, but I thought I saw some coachable elements of Wooldridge's game.

Some problems with this

Competition should bring out the best out of all.

If we are ever in a spot where we need to rely on another QB even for a series all is lost if Dobbs is in and expected to win.

All the eggs are in the Maye basket which is why

IlovetheDrake.

Is dedicating one of 53 roster spots to a third QB, as opposed to another position vital?

To me having a third QB on the practice squad is important. And I understand the validity of the insurance aspect, as a healthy scratch that is available in emergency on game day.

But in reality, if a team is playing a regular or postseason game with the third QB of the day, it's highly unlikely that they are going to win that game.

If he is important enough for future plans to keep on the roster/avoid having other teams sign him off your practice squad, then fine. If not, use that 53rd roster spot on somebody else you want to retain and develop as a redshirt rookie.

I agree that a healthy competition is needed. I am only using Milton for this scenario, he seemingly was **** talking about being the guy but he is hot trash. That was not healthy, I do think we need an upgrade over Dobbs and I did not see that ability in Wooldridge, so I would love to see a young arm claimed or traded for.

I anticipate we draft a QB in the 4th round next year.

Some movement, Vikings signed Carlson Wentz and shipped Sam Howell to the Eagles.

I think we stay with Dobbs, not ideal but he has regular season games under his belt, some years in the league, I think it's Maye or bust and Vrabel not only knows that but is part of the plan, part of his evaluation of Maye long term, he needs to not only play well but stay healthy throughout the season, phisically and mentally, not breaking down like mac Jones after a series of 3 bad games, protecting his body against cheap shots, not getting concussed trying to save a lost play with his legs, throwing the ball away, recovering after a bad pick 6, all of that is part of the evaluation.

A franchise Qb needs to stay upright through 17+ games, I know injuries happen, non-contact injuries there's nothing anyone can do about it but those QBs that are every now and then around injuries or unavailable are rarely a passport to playoffs and SB.

What’s the goal here? Isn’t it upgrading the talent level in the QB room? It’s not just having a 3rd QB to have one. You want someone to challenge Dobbs for the backup spot. You want someone who can actually play if god forbid they actually have to.

What you have to offer to get the best available talent is a spot on the 53. Use it.

I liked the Idea of Howell being with Maye again.

We could of upgraded over Dobbs.

I think Vrabel has kept 3 QBs on the roster only once - and even then only because it was Levis' rookie season

The giants and Browns both wanted multiple shots on goal at qb. The patriots seem to be reluctant to bring in a good 2nd or 3rd qb because they are skittish about threatening Maye
Pats goal is to avoid talented backup qbs at all costs
