Shouldn't Truman Jones be considered an Edge? I'm thinking Hasty, Baker, Jacobs, Swinson end up on PS. Lowe has got to be better than Jacobs. Haven't seen anything from Mapu, might be PS also. Didn't like Gibbens yesterday but he is a Vrabel guy. I should have recorded the game so I could just watch Ben Brown. I still have trouble seeing him as a player.

You can drag any player to a different category. That was a change I made during the last update, and it should be available for anyone putting a prediction together and trying to re-categorize someone.

Aug 18 roster projection from Yahoo

Only three RBs, offset by seven WRs

Lowe, Wallace and Strange make it, with Jacobs, Sow and Robinson OL cuts

Quarterbacks (2)
IN: Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs
OUT: Ben Wooldridge

Running Back (3)
IN: Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, TreVeyon Henderson
OUT: Terrell Jennings, JaMycal Hasty

Wide Receivers (7)
IN: Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, Efton Chism III, Javon Baker
OUT: Ja’Lynn Polk, Kendrick Bourne, John Jiles, Jeremiah Webb
Instead of carrying four running backs, that additional spot goes to an extra wide receiver given the tough decision the coaching staff will face. Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams are all clear roster locks, but that final spot is coming down to Efton Chism III and Javon Baker. Based on Chism's performance in the second preseason game, he has certainly gone above and beyond to earn his spot.

As for Baker, he has taken advantage of his opportunities, and also has filled in at gunner beside Brenden Schooler with Marcellas Dial out for the season. And then, there's Kendrick Bourne, who has been on the roster bubble all throughout camp and recently has been sidelined due to injury. Depending on the extent of the injury, the team could decide to start him on injured reserve, meaning he will miss the first four games. The same can be said for Ja'Lynn Polk.

Tight end (3)
IN: Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Jack Westover
OUT: Gee Scott, Jaheim Bell, Jack Westover, C.J. Dippre, Cole Fotheringham
Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper are the starters, with Jack Westover having earned a spot in Josh McDaniels' offense due to his work throughout training camp at fullback. Outside of those three, there has not been any other tight end who has earned a spot on the 53-man roster.

Offensive Line (10)
IN: Morgan Moses, Mike Onwenu, Garrett Bradbury, Jared Wilson, Will Campbell, Marcus Bryant, Ben Brown, Vederian Lowe, Caedan Wallace, Cole Strange
OUT: Layden Robinson, Sidy Sow, Alec Lindstrom, Tyrese Robinson, Mekhi Butler, Jack Conley, Demontrey Jacobs
With tackle, Morgan Moses has been taking it slow throughout camp, so is he able to play all 17 games? If not, you need depth options that can be easily slotted in.

Defensive Line/EDGE (11)
In: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Keion White, Khyiris Tonga, Joshua Farmer, Harold Landry, K’Lavon Chaisson, Bradyn Swinson, Truman Jones, Anfernee Jennings, Jeremiah Pharms
Out: Jahvaree Ritzie, David Olajiga, Isaiah Iton, Jereme Robinson, Elijah Ponder
Anfernee Jennings had a standout performance in the second preseason game, tallying three sacks and earning high praise from Vrabel. He is someone whom the Patriots head coach challenged this offseason, but has stepped up and continued to prove himself. While some might have had him off the roster earlier in the summer, he has made a strong case for a spot with his perseverance and level of play. Truman Jones is a depth piece on the defensive line; their special teams contributions further solidify their spot.

Linebackers (4)
In: Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, Jack Gibbens, Jahlani Tavai
Out: Marte Mapu, Monty Rice, Cam Riley, R.J. Moten

Cornerbacks (5)
In: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin, DJ James
Out: Tre Avery, Isaiah Bolden, Kobee Minor, Miles Battle, Jordan Polk, Brandon Crossley
Kobee Minor has also shown solid improvement in recent weeks and is a candidate for the practice squad.

Safeties (5)
In: Jabrill Peppers, Jaylinn Hawkins, Craig Woodson, Brenden Schooler, Marcus Epps
Out: Kyle Dugger, Dell Pettus
It's hard to believe, but at this point, Kyle Dugger's chances of making the team don't seem to be very high. He has been mainly playing with the second or third unit, which was further emphasized when he played throughout the third and fourth quarters of Saturday's game. As for Marcus Epps, he and Dell Pettus are competing for that fifth spot.

Special Teams (3)
In: Parker Romo, Bryce Baringer, Julian Ashby
Out: Andres Borregales

Doug Kyed's August 18 roster projection:

Similar to the post above, Kyed has 3 RB & 7 WR, and also has Westover as the 3rd tight end.

He also has the Pats going with 9 OL, Kobee Minor making the roster as a 6th CB, and again no Kyle Dugger.

"It would still be worth checking the waiver wire to see if another quarterback shakes free who could compete with Dobbs for the backup role."

"JaMycal Hasty is a fine reserve running back, but he’s unneeded, barring injury, behind Stevenson, Henderson and Gibson."

"Baker has been better in practice than in preseason games. He’s also contributing more on special teams."

"Westover is currently above Fotheringham on the depth chart and offers more athleticism."

"Since our last 53-man roster projection, we’ve replaced Demontrey Jacobs with Lowe and Caedan Wallace with Strange based on Saturday’s lineup substitutions. Sidy Sow is still in the mix with Wallace and Strange as a backup guard."

DEFENSIVE LINE (5)
Christian Barmore, Joshua Farmer, Jeremiah Pharms, Khyiris Tonga, Milton Williams

EDGE DEFENDERS (6)
Truman Jones, Keion White, K’Lavon Chaisson, Anfernee Jennings, Harold Landry, Bradyn Swinson

LINEBACKER (4)
Christian Elliss, Jack Gibbens, Robert Spillane, Jahlani Tavai

CORNERBACK (6)
Alex Austin, Carlton Davis III, Christian Gonzalez, DJ James, Marcus Jones, Kobee Minor
"Minor sneaks onto the roster. He’s improved as the summer has worn on. He’s shown an edge at times in practice, which is something that could be valued by head coach Mike Vrabel."

SAFETY (5)
Marcus Epps, Jaylinn Hawkins, Jabrill Peppers, Brenden Schooler, Craig Woodson
"Kyle Dugger is noticeably absent from here. It feels hard to put him on the 53-man roster when he’s obviously below Peppers, Hawkins, Woodson, Epps and Schooler on the depth chart. The Patriots could keep Dugger as a sixth safety; his salary is guaranteed anyway. But there’s clearly a reason why he’s playing so deep into preseason games. Perhaps the Patriots could still trade him if they’re willing to eat salary."

This roster projection is identical to the one above, with the exception of Caeden Wallace in as a 10th OL, and Minor out at CB.

CUTS AREN'T HARD AT ALL
So many have pointed out the difficulty of making cuts from our roster. I don't it that way at all. Let's be clear. I like our roster a lot. Much has been done and more will be done in 2026 to make this team a continuing playoff contender.

THAT BEING SAID,
as usual there is plenty of room to upgrade players (see below for the positions and the current contenders). And yes, I would personally want to see us keep both Dugger and Strange.

#6 CORNER
Battle or Bolden

#4 SAFETY
Dugger, Pettus, Epps

#5 SAFETY
Pettus, Epps

OLB
Swinson, Ponder

DT
Pharms, Pecko

LG
Strange, Wallace, Sow

RG
Strange, Wallace, Sow

I'm enthused to see what we've got with this team, but as I think about the roster, it occurs to me that I don't even think we've seen our projected starters PRACTICE together, let alone get some reps in a pre-season game!

While I expect OL to be better because of Campbell alone, it's not a help to him to have other weak links on the line and I'm thinking we may see the team take a lot of looks at linemen cut from other teams, even well into the season.

I'd feel a lot better if these guys had more history playing alongside each other, but in this era of football where veterans probably wisely sit out a lot of the offseason and players aren't made to practice or condition quite as much, September winds up being more of a pre-season anyways, but I think we'll be seeing some new names especially at OL.

Mark Morse with a new roster projection this morning:

Mark has the Pats beginning the season with 3 RB and 7 WR as well, but also has only 2 TE on the initial roster, with Westover, Frothringham and Dippre as potential signees to the practice squad. His roster has nine OL, with Strange and Lowe in.

On defense Mark has DT Kyle Peko in; I think this is the first roster projection where I've seen his name. That spot opens up due to the Pats going with three LBs - no Jahlani Tavai.

"Tavai is a tough cut because they are thin at the inside LB spot with only Gibbens as a backup. Tavai is another player that doesn’t fit the new system. He should have some trade value. I believe the team can sign a veteran player to the PS."

Mark also has the Pats going with six corners, with Miles Battle and DJ James in, over Kobee Minor - and noting the need for a sixth corner:

"I like Battles size, and DJ James has just played himself onto this team. Austin is a quality backup and can play in the slot. Carlton Davis is hurt every year, and you can expect him to miss at least a month. Marcus Jones has played well, but his small stature is a major problem in the Red Zone."

And like everyone else, he sees Kyle Dugger as a dead man walking.

"The Dugger era is over. He can’t cover anyone and doesn’t have any instincts for the game. There is no way to trade Dugger because of his outrageous contract. They would have to pay a big chunk of his contract in order to get anything back. His Interception at the end of the game Saturday was typical of his career. He makes the Interception to seal the game, but doesn’t go down immediately. He is held up, and an alert Vikings receiver tries to punch the ball out of his hands. The officials ruled he was down??? It was a bonehead play that is typical of his career."

This is where extra skill players instead of a guy like Tavai just doesn't make sense to me. Cut the 7th WR or 6th CB (though this makes some sense due to injuries).

Nice roster, good job. I did one this morning that I didn’t post, but it highlighted a few general issues I have with the team. My thoughts on yours:

- I don’t think Westover or Hasty have done enough to actually earn a roster spot, other than us having to have someone for those positions. They can be PS game day elevations easily if needed. Issue is I couldn’t find anyone else to take their roster spots, so I still think we’re a bit thin on depth in general. Hopefully we can get better players here off waivers.

- I wonder if they substitute Sow for Strange if they think Strange really looks like he’s toast?

- Mapu hasn’t done much in camp, I would guess Tavai makes it over him if he’s healthy, and if not, I still don’t think Mapu makes the roster. Same comment really as Westover and Hasty - practice squadder, and I hope we find someone better off waivers because I’m not impressed enough with anyone else internally to take that spot on the 53.

- They might go with another DB for one of those spots I mention above since they only have 9 DBs now plus Schooler. Jordan Polk may have made the team based on his ST play last game, and giving him a chance to grow at CB. Or maybe Miles Battle who has also looked decent. Kobee Minor has gotten a lot of playing time but hasn’t looked good, but given all that time they’re investing maybe they think the potential is there. Of course, the issue with all 3 of those guys is the same as the above - is anyone really going to claim them off waivers, so should they be considered PS game day elevations too?

So again, my takeaway is that we can still use an additional infusion of talent to round out the bottom part of the roster.

Hasty: I agree...I'm not sure he is the best 4th RB but I think they may need a 4th if they are a "running" team. I would have picked Larison if healthy.
Westover is probably a good candidate for call-up from PS. I suspect the team won't be needing a FB for some games.
- I wonder if they substitute Sow for Strange if they think Strange really looks like he’s toast?
I can't figure out what is going on with Sow. He played ok in 2023. I would think he would fit the scheme better then Strange.
- Mapu hasn’t done much in camp
Yeah I was not sure about adding him to the 53. Vrabel had some praise for him 1-2 weeks ago. So I added him. Was a binkie.
, I would guess Tavai makes it over him if he’s healthy, and if not, I still don’t think Mapu makes the roster.
I think Tavai is similar to Bourne...if you're hurt...you may not make the 53. Tavai might be IR.

I am not impressed with anyone after the 5 I mentioned for CB.

I'm looking forward to seeing who is cut from other teams in the next 7 days

I like your roster.

Unfortunately, I don't think that Strange and Dugger are making it. I would favor both.

Also, Tavai should make the roster over Mapu.

Mapu could take Dugger's spot for now. Or the second IR DTR before the cut could be Tavai.

Strange's spot could just be used for someone who will be put on IR the next day.

I do like having Hasty as a placeholder for whichever RB we pick up. But This spot could also go to someone going on IR.
========
SO
1) Polk and Bourne could make the 53 for a day and then be put on IR.
2) In addition, a couple of more who are on IR before the cutdown day will also go on IR. Dial comes to mind. Williams could also be put on the shelf for 4 weeks with no harm done.

Strange might....not looking good for Dugger

IMO Tavai to IR

I'm not a fan of the backup CB's other than Austin and DJ James. Maybe some one better will be cut from another team soon. I think Williams is ok. From reports...he seemed fine in the locker room after the game. He will make the 53 IMO.

Differences:
- I don’t like Dobbs as backup either. DeVito or Stidham would be ideal if either are available as they have experience with EP.
- I’m assuming Tavai goes on IR; giving Mapu benefit of the doubt for a few ok plays in 1st half at LB. But happy to leave him off. Pretty much same comment with Gibbens, who I also included.
- Including Ponder because he played very well in camp and staff loved him; assuming vanilla scheme affected him most but he played ok last night.
- Including Wallace on OL because he actually showed something last night. Happy to leave him off too, but possible there’s something to build from here.
- I didn’t see Westover showing anything, I’d get a FB off the street or put him on practice squad and elevate as needed.

Haven't seen much from Gibbens. Ponder PS, would love DeVito or Stidham, I missed whatever others saw from Wallace last night. Agree on Westover.

Quarterback - Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett, Jimmy Garappolo
No changes here, Brady looked sharp in the first two weeks of camp and in the joint practices against Washington where he took the majority of reps. Mallett started the game against the Redskins and played the entire first half. And he was plagued by the same inconsistencies that he’s displayed throughout his career.
Garappolo looked better in the game conditions than he has in practices; he looked poised in the pocket and showed really nice touch on a couple of his deep passes. He latched on to Brian Tyms and those two showed some nice chemistry. Much like in 2013 with Tebow and Sims, those two from the third unit were in sync.
Opening day roster – Brady, Mallett, Garappolo (3)

Running Backs
– Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, James White, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray, Stephen Houston, Roy Finch
No changes here mainly by default, the top three players are virtual locks for the roster, Bolden struggled early in camp and now is hurt but neither Gray nor Houston were able to generate much on the ground. Houston lost a fumble and Finch who we thought would have to make his mark on STs put the ball on the ground twice.
Opening day roster- Ridley, Vereen, White and Bolden (4)

Tight End
– Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, James Develin, D.J. Williams, Asa Watson, Justin Jones
With Gronkowski still not allowed in contact drills and Hooman injured, the door was open for Williams, Jones and Watson to get all the reps not only in practice but in the first pre-season game.
Williams got hurt during the joint practices and not much was displayed by either Jones or Watson to distinguish themselves in Washington to justify a roster spot. Jones’ intriguing size may land him on the practice squad. Develin remains the FB/H-back and third tight end for now.
Opening Day Roster- Gronkowski, Hooman, Develin (3)

Wide Receiver
– Aaron Dobson, Julian Edelman, Brandon Lafell, Danny Amendola, Josh Boyce, Kenbrell Thompkins, Jeremy Gallon, Derrick Johnson, Brian Tyms, Wilson Van Hooser
With Dobson still on the shelf following foot surgery, the competition is open for others to step up outside the numbers. Edelman and Amendola had impressive weeks against the Skins. LaFell is starting to come around a bit and Thompkins to me is a virtual lock to make the roster.
Boyce has failed to distinguish himself so far and could find himself on the bubble. With the team considering keeping only 5 true WRs, he could find himself out unless he turns things around.
Opening Day Roster- Dobson, Edelman, Lafell, Amendola, Thompkins (5)

Offensive Tackle
– Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Cameron Fleming, Marcus Cannon, RJ Mattes, Jordan Devey
Solder and Vollmer are the starters and locked in, Fleming could be the swing tackle, however Devey got the start in Washington. Cannon who played RG almost exclusively in camp played right tackle. For now, there remains no change here.
Opening Day Roster- Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, Fleming (4)

Offensive Guard
– Logan Mankins, Jon Halapio, Josh Kline, Chris Barker
Mankins is healthy and locked as the left guard, Cannon and Kline have been getting most of the reps at right guard. The coaches like Kline and he and Halapio round out the roster with Cannon having the versatility to move between guard and tackle.
Opening Day Roster- Mankins, Halapio, Kline (3)

Center
– Ryan Wendell, Dan Connolly, Bryan Stork, Braxston Cave
Stork, seemed to be pushing Wendell, the returning starter until he went down with an injury. Dan Connolly has been taking a lot of reps at center since then and he and Stork depending upon the severity of his injury may be standing when the smoke clears.
Opening Day Roster – Connolly, Stork (2)

Defensive End
– Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Will Smith, Zach Moore, Jake Bequette, Michael Buchanan
Jones and Ninkovich both are locked and solid if not outstanding starters, the team is looking for depth and some rotational help from Smith, Buchanan, Bequette and Moore.
Buchanan, looks to suffer from the same inability to set the edge as in his rookie season. Bequette is hurt right now and Smith just working back from injury. Moore is raw but looks intriguing.
Opening Day Roster – Jones, Ninkovich, Smith, Buchanan, Moore (5)

Defensive Tackle
– Vince Wilfork, Dominique Easley, Tommy Kelly, Chris Jones, Joe Vellano, Sealver Siliga, Marcus Forston, Tuipulotu, L.T., Manumaleuna, Eathyn
The team suffered two significant injuries this week to both Siliga (hand) and Jones (ankle) in Washington. If those two are out for a significant time it could open the door for Vellano or Forston to step in,in the meanwhile it affects their depth. Especially with Kelly and Wilfork just coming back from injury and Easley not yet cleared to practice.
Opening Day Roster – Wilfork, Easley, Kelly, Siliga, Jones (5)

Linebacker -
Jerod Mayo, Jamie Collins, Dont’a Hightower, Steven Beauharnais, Chris White James Anderson, Ja’Gared Davis, James Morris, Cameron Gordon, Darius Fleming, Taylor McCuller, Deontae Skinner
Mayo, Collins and Hightower are locked in as starters. Anderson is a proven vet who can cover in sub-packages. Looked for a better performance from Beauharnais in Washington, he missed a few tackles and overran some plays. Fleming flashed both good and bad. Don’t go to sleep on McCuller or Skinner and although he was just re-signed, I think Morris may nudge out White for the sixth LB slot.
Opening Day Roster – Mayo, Hightower, Collins, Anderson, Beauharnais, Morris (6)

Cornerback
– Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, Alfonzo Dennard, Kyle Arrington, Logan Ryan, Jemea Thomas, Daxton Swanson, Malcolm Butler, Justin Green, Travis Hawkins
Deepest position on the team, Revis, Ryan, Dennard and Arrington are locks. Browner gets a four week exemption due to his suspension. Thomas and Swanson both got hurt and Malcolm Butler really helped his cause in Washington with a good performance. Hawkins has good return ability in STs so the book isn’t closed on the last slot yet.
Opening Day Roster – Revis, Ryan, Dennard, Arrington, Butler (5) **Browner**

Safety
– Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, Patrick Chung, Nate Ebner, Kanorris Davis, Tavon Wilson, Shamiel Gary
McCourty is a lock and after him the competition is wide open. Harmon is deigned to be the starter but the team is making him earn it. Chung, Ebner and Tavon Wilson have all gotten significant reps with the first unit.
All three backups have good STs experience, Wilson seems to have benefitted from working out with the other DBs in Arizona this off-season and nudges Chung off the roster in this projection. But there is still a long way to go.
Opening Day Roster – McCourty, Harmon, Wilson, Ebner (4)

Specialists:
Stephen Gostkowski, Ryan Allen, Danny Aiken, Tyler Ott, Matthew Slater
Gostkowski and Allen were an excellent tandem in 2013, and nothing changes there. Gostkowski is solid and has been kicking 50+ yard field goals in practice. The only camp competition is at long snapper, and Aiken so far looked sharp. Slater is a special team’s captain and a Pro-Bowler a lock.
Opening Day Roster – Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken, Slater (4) Total Roster (53)

You will be disappointed.

The waiver wire is unlikely to have even a couple of players that are better than those already on the team.
