They don’t have to put him on the 53 anymore. Teams can select 2 guys to go straight to IR-DTR on cutdown day without having to make the roster

They haven’t really had anyone else to use it on, for the most part, although if Kyle Williams is concussed then he might end up taking a spot.

No, Polk is the goner. Baker plays special teams. No DRT-IR for Polk, either -- they'd have to put him on the 53-man before they can do that, and besides, he's not valuable enough to waste a DRT-IR spot. They only get 8 for the whole season. Chism and Baker make the team.

They changed the rule last year. Teams can put two players on IR on cutdown day and DTR them.

And as you said, teams also have 8 DTRs, so it's not a huge risk. A large percentage of IR injuries are season-ending, after all.
