The pass game is clearly the weak point on this team.
I think this was the concern many of us had with the return of JMD - would he retain the dynamic and complex offense that a young 2nd year QB can't really digest it in one offseason??
There was NO plays to WR's in the 1's possession on Fri night. Sure, our run game seems to be in really good shape, but you can't win in this league without a productive pass threat.
My 1 saving hope - is that we've only seen basic routes, without a scheme game plan to get guys open. They're working on building skills and testing guys. But if JMD succeeds at anything, it's scheming guys open, creating mismatches, and playcalling.
My only hope is they are playing possum with the passing game.
Sort of like we unleashed Moss, maybe Josh Mcd doesn’t want to to tip his hat to anyone how this passing game will look.

As Albert Breer mentioned after Mayo was fired, he believed the next coach was going to clean house with the "hybrids". With that said, it's going to be difficult trading a player who can only play a box S with that contract. He had his best year in 2021 when he had McCourty and Philips deep where he could patrol a short area of the field. Since then, some posters have been in denial finding excuses why his play has taken a nose dive. It's because he can't play the traditional S position. Pats could've let him walk in 2024. But for some reason, they tagged him and then doubled down by re-signing him when 31 teams ignored him.

If they can't find a trade partner, this will be his last season as his dead cap is $14M and cap savings of $1M in 2024 to a dead cap of $4.5M and $12.5M in cap savings in 2025.
I often saw Peppers dropping into a linebacker spot during the last preseason game. I think Dugger is the only other safety with the physicality to do that. I think you are right that this is his last year as a Patriot.

"What Efton Chism just did in practice gives me goosebumps." - John Madden probably.

Roster lock based on everything we've seen, can't let him get picked up elsewhere. You can find bums like Polk and Baker in every draft.

If this is his starting point, just imagine when he's got the routes even smoother and chemistry with Maye...

That preseason game might not seem like a big pressure moment, but to an UDFA rookie fighting for their life, it would have been the most pressure he's ever been under... and his response was to ball out.. we need guys that can perform in big moments and this kid clearly has the stones for it, in what was his biggest test of his life. Throw him in with the 1st team next game.

Good post. Chism seems to have the ability to up his game and produce under pressure.

Still early, but so far kid passes the sniff test, smells like he's going to be a productive player. Pats get to decide whether it's for them, or for someone else.

I am fairly confident at this point that the Pats carry 7 WRs:

- Diggs as the WR1
- Pop as the slot specialist
- Boutte as the primary WR2
- Hollins as a blocking specialist and red zone target
- Williams who will do a little bit of everything
- Chism primarily as a punt returner who will sub in for Pop sometimes
- Baker primarily as a special teams gunner who will get limited offensive reps for now

That's not unreasonable, particularly if they use Hollins at TE3 some and (with Larison on IR) keep only 3 true RBs.

You could probably swap Boutte and Kyle Williams.

Yeah this is probably right. Bourne has no place on this team now IMO. Great dude, great teammate but the time has come. Do they see it that way though?

I doubt they carry 7 and they'll dress even less on gameday. Also my guy Marcus is our punt returner.

I don't understand why people are shocked that the passing offense looks bad right now. It SHOULD look choppy and inconsistent. You have a 22 year old 2nd year QB with 12 starts in an entirely different offense. Plus, the offense they will be running is highly dependent on timing and precise execution to be successful. So, what did you THINK it was going to look like after the 13th practice of "camp cake"?

Christ, the hype machine on this team turns on and off more times, than my shower. This offense is going to look like this well into the season These guys need reps, reps, and MORE reps before we are going to see any consistent offense and if you expect any different you aren't being realistic.

Any games this team will win for at LEAST the first month of the season will be due the defense, the run game, and winning the TO battle. We have a QB with great potential. We have WR's that are much improved. We have a proven world class OC and will be a well-coached team.

I watch clips from a bunch of teams QB'd by guys I had never heard of and they ALL looked like they had better passing attacks than we did on Friday. I DON'T care. I understand that the offense's job early in the season is not to LOSE games, not necessarily win them. That will come, or I hope it will come.

Agree. Obviously hoped Maye would show that he was immediately poised for a huge step forward this year, but there is A LOT on his plate. In the event that this is a disappointing year for him, we should still be confident in the possibility of a big 3rd year jump from him (assuming the coaching staff stays consistent which it should).

Mandela effect in full force

If we could take this board back in the last days of JMD last stint here, we were all talking about this. But sure enough, we got a **** show of a coaching staff, suddenly the old is the new gold.

Personally, I think this is still a rebuilding year. We have gaps in our roster, and trully one blue chip guy, with PLENTY of untested guys as contributors, mainly for the OL, but secondary and our LB/Edge corps. Heck, if not for Diggs (which was SUCH A DEBATE to hire him with people thinking he was damaged goods and not worth a big contract), even our WR room would be a big question mark.

In the end, Football also relies heavily on our QB. The best thing about McDaniels is that he knows how to work with QBs and why Im on his side, but it's crazy that we have all forgotten that our now savior OC was being hammered exactly for being unimaginate and not putting WRs in great positions to contribute - now we cant blame a lack of QB throwing power either

Gotta say this is kind of an unbelievable quote from Baker considering he has had somewhat of an attitude at times last year. Vrabel’s coaching style paying dividends.
Mayo was an indecisive, aloof, lackey.

Good or bad, Vrabes gives a ****. Riding someone's ass like he does with Baker shows he cares. Tuna and Bill were very much like that. That's what good coaches do.

We have a 22 year old QB with a turnover of 4 of his 5 offensive linemen, a new #1 receiver and two promising new rookie receivers and what is likely to be a new #1 RB (in importance if not in snap count), he will likely see 7 new faces in what may be the majority of his formations. I suspect the reason the passing game hasn’t dazzled yet is that everyone is simple trying to learn each other’s names and how to play with each other

No question it is a rebuilding year.

We have a 2nd year Qb who is learning a new offense with a new OC , and as of this moment still tries to play hero ball.
We have a new HC establishing his brand of football and culture
The line has 2 rookies on the left side and questions at the center position.
Our TEs are old, but functional and not run blockers.
WR has some decent players, but no apparent top-level talent. Lot of WR2-5s

The D is way ahead of the O. Assuming health they are a top 15 unit and thats OK.

I think we'll see a lot of running and a decent amount of screens, dump offs to the backs, and scrambles until some that timing is better. I still expect that should be enough to be better than last year. And hopefully that timing comes around quickly. I think once they establish Rham and Henderson in their roles and the run game as whole the rest will follow quickly.

McDaniels was able to get Mac to do enough to win a lot of games. I think he can get Maye playing well enough as well.
Josh's offense was well instilled Mac was new so not exactly the same.

This, and it's not like Maye has been bad. He's had his ups and downs while learning a new system, and based on practice reports there have been more ups than downs.

He was excellent in the practices leading up to the game, played a few snaps, had the bad fumble, and then had a relatively down practice.

Let's see how he does in the upcoming joint practice and the following game in which he should have more snaps.

I agree with most of what you say but what we saw in the game from the top two units wasn’t choppy or inconsistent. It was non-existent. Against the Commanders backups no less. I for one didn’t expect that. Thought we could hit a slant, drag or a quick come back to a receiver.

McDaniels was able to get Mac to do enough to win a lot of games. I think he can get Maye playing well enough as well.
For this year, can McD make Maye stop making mental mistakes? Fumbles, dumb Ints, getting read of the ball quickly? This is his wheelhouse
