Celtics 2024-2025 Discussion

I find the Pacers style on offense intriguing. As Triumph said in the Larry Bird thread "What I loved about watching Bird and the Celtics play was that they passed the ball around."

The Pacers are NOT the Bird Celtics, mind you. But the commitment to unselfishness, floor spacing, and passing the ball to an extreme is a bit of a throwback. A Rick Carlisle effect?

They...
play 9-11 rotation players
no hero ball
no megastar
10 players averaging double figures. Yes, 10.
constant motion, speed, tempo, pace
5 shooters on the floor
far and away the highest % of FGs that follow assists
far and away the most passes per possession
far and away the most assists per game

Regarding these last 2, here's a scatter plot showing you the extent to which the Pacers offense is a total outlier vs the rest of the NBA playoff teams

@1960Pats this answers your question.

Look at where we are. Least amount of assists. Least amount of passes. It was more last year.

Last year's, and yes, you're correct

C's were average in passes, above average in assists

As you know RW in my post to you.. I've been clamoring for JM to play more into the bench.. give the Knicks a different look.. it shouldn't have to take losing your best player and facing elimination to alter things. Tory smith, Schemeirman, Quata they could help at the very least Quata has 6 fouls to give.

Great research. I was wondering about that question too…that is, what’s different about the offense this year.

Last year they really moved the ball around the perimeter a lot and also a lot of pick n rolls. This year, seems they just look at what appears to be a favorable matchup and attack it.

I don’t have a problem with all the 3 pointers. I don’t like the forced, low-quality 3 point attempts when they have so many great players on the court.

It’s only end of 3rd so I could eat my words, but if Jaylen Brown can play a role like this (7-12, 7 assists, 1 turnover) they can do some serious damage. My problem with the two Jays is they create way too many negative plays (turnovers, bad shots) due to impatience or trying to play hero ball. I get that on many teams, including past Celtics squads, this is needed, but this version of the Celtics is a loaded team. Balance, patience, passing, choosing good opportunities. This has been one of their better playoff performances so far. If they lose this game, this applies to next season’s outlook.

Man, a couple of great trips down the floor for the Celtics here, that sick pass from White to Pritchard, and Brown to Holiday just now. Damn guys, where has this been

Jaylen Brown passes up a quick fire 3, fires pass into Kornet for a layup. Makes me wonder if he feels less pressure to alpha with Tatum out.

Edit: JB heads-up play to foul out the little *****.

I loved that play

Brunson and Hart look like the two loser punks with baseball bats and knives hanging out in Gotham city’s sewers and Batman lights them up.
